Wood Staining

I am wondering how easy it is to stain a dining set? It was recently stained a cherry wood colour but we had wanted a dark, walnut wood colour. Any advise is appreciated.

Used to do staining for a small wooden plank before.

Its not difficult, but it is quite tedious. I bought those wood stains (think the carpenter uncle calls it selak or something). It is a liquid that comes in those glass bottle. bascially use a brush and "paint" the piece. Then wait for it to dry. After that, use a medium grade sand paper to said it down till smooth. Use a damp cloth and clean up the debris from sanding. Then repeat the process of painting and sanding. Slowly move from medium grade sandpaper to a fine grade sandpaper.

Once u r happy with the smoothness and evenness, apply furniture polish or wax. I myself used pedge last time. can buy from major DIY shop or supermarket. Polish it till shine.

Wood staining should be using a pc of clothe to rub the soluble dye onto the wood like ash ply.

After a few prodcedure of staining and sanding, a layer of lacquer is apply either using brush or air brush to get

a glossy finishing or just leave it in matt finishing.

Shellac is flake dissolve into methylene for varnishing onto smoother surface as in teak ply.

The finishing is glossy.

You can get those ready to use, both wood stain and shellac at the paint shop.

note that if you are apply to existing... you need to re-surface it using sandpaper before applying stain again. then lastly the lacquer or varnishing for protection.

Just to share the difference between shellace and wood varnishing.

I don't think it good to diy varnishing the dinning set as in industrial, we use power sander and air-brush for a good quality job.

Its good to try on small item like stool but not for the dinning set.
