Soundbar Too Tall For Tv On Table-stand?

I'm shopping for either the Philips or Samsung Soundbar home theatre system to go with my 42-inch plasma TV.

For my TV, thinking of the Samsung :)

Thing is, I'd love to have the soundbar as an integrated home theatre system, but my TV is NOT wall-mounted, but will be sitting on the console on its stand.

How? Will getting the Soundbar block the TV?

Will it:

1) look ugly and cluttered?

2) block the remote infra-red receiver on the Samsung plasma TV?

Any experience with or thoughts about soundbars and non-wall-mounted TVs, pls share.
