Change Of Warddrobe Doors Possible?

Hi All

appreciate your opinion on this matter.

will be collecting keys to a resale place soon and was thinking about some simple renovation.

for starters, thinking about changing the wardrobe doors. It has an awful print which we really do not like but if we were to destroy a perfectly good wardrobe. v.v.sayang.

so now we r thinking can we just maybe change the doors or do a laminate over.

any good carpenter to recc? we also want to do some simple study table in the rooms.

i also tot of doing the same for my kitchen cabinets, instead of tearing everything off juz replace the door/laminates will do...wonder if anyone here can recommend any contractor doing so?

I recommend Chew Interior's David Wah from Jurong branch. Very obliging fellow, always helps you save money. And it's a reputable firm.

actually i find is not worth to just change the doors only and you will have to see the condition of the cabinets...my carpenter is a very nice n friendly guy, most of all i think his price is reasonable.PM me if you are interested.

I have the same thought as you last time, but after checking quotation I don't find it worthwhile, must as well change the whole thing. Anything you don't like you can still change before moving in, but after move in will be difficult to change.

My advice is hack it off and do a new one, unless you can do the lamination by yourself.

I don't think carpenter will want to do a small budget for just changing the door.

I'm sure there will be some carpenter out there that will take up the job.

but lets face it, unless you are a friend of the carpenter, they will be charging quite high, making it very 'bo hua' just to do the doors.

you might find yourself in the next 2 situations:

1) the good and reputable carpenters will not take up the proj as they are better off taking up other bigger proj.

2) those that are willing to take up will have to charge significantly higher as there is no economies of scales.

yeah i totally agree with Jason.

but again, it depends on the budget, replacing the doors could be comparatively higher in price, but the overall cost should still be cheaper than doing the entire wardrobe...

I understnd that there's no way to change the laminate as they were glued on.

Can anyone verify this? I've also just bought a resale, the wardrobes doors and frame designs are so old school... deep red wood grains..OMG. Anyway to just relaminate??

Dear MsChong,

It could be done BUT most carpenters would turn down the job. (I have had one side of a shelf re-laminated because it was tarnished by the timber-flooring lacquer, and the carpenter rectified it as he was there doing other areas).

The reasons:

- The built-in structure (be it a wardrobe, book-shelf etc) would have to dismantle carefully from the wall(s) where it is attached,

- The old laminate or veneer removed, the surface prepared for re-lamination,

- The whole structure re-mounted.

There you could see that the difficulty is not the re-lamination but the time & effort in dismantling, preparing and re-mounting.

Also, the laminate for the door panels are machine-pressed, so the carpenter would have to send them to the factory.

In short, it would normally not cost effective to re-laminate, and don't forget that the finished structure would be less than ideal in term of workmanship.

Maybe you can try painting, I got my painter to paint all my cabinet doors. Cheap and good.

But my painter did say that certain furniture need to sand down before painting. HTH
