My Cosy Home In Holland

Recommended Posts

Day 17

3 men came today, moved my furniture to mbr since it's ready, scrap off paint of bedroom 2, plaster kitchen ceiling

Total cost for the day's work: $300

Hacking 50ft walls and clearing of debris: $1000

Accumulated cost for labour: $3700 (including clearing of debris)

Accumulated cost for raw materials: $2340.21

Total reno bill as of now: $7040.21

bought tiles, 4 colours of pvc rounded corner strips and 4 colours of grout today from Hafary, will be delivered on Sat PM. Costs me $1001.71 in total after 5% discount. Think I can't get much discount as my quantity is low. A bit disappointed.

I intend to spend as little as possible while having good standard of work :) No target. I pay every week, as agreed prior to starting of this project.

Kudos to you. Dun think it will exceed 15k mark....

for my hacking contractor, i just ask the hdb licensed contractors. as for the rest, you can DIY so anyone can do it. but you must get professionals :D i just observe what needs to be done and do it. you can observe my procedures and follow, where applicable :D or you can hire me as consultant :D

did you order the grout and tiling materials yourself? how do you estimate the materials usage?

yeah ordered myself, but was expecting more than 5% discount

number of tiles to be purchased is calculated by my tiler. pvc strip depends on the length of your tiles and the number of corners you want to protect. grout depends on the number of colours of tiles you are getting and the floor area it covers. it's stated on the bag of grout that for 30x30cm tiles, 0.3kg can cover 1 square metre. Each bag is 2.5kg (Hafary selling) so that's enough for 8 square metre. I bought 4 colours as my tiles are of varying colours. You can also ask the sales people to help you with the pvc strip and the grout. I am sure they will be able to recommend the number of strips/grout to buy.

hmm...number of tiles is calculated by the tiler? or in terms of area sqft? what was the wastage calculated by him?

So if i get the tiles from the tile supplier, they will recommend the amount of grout and strips to buy i suppose? course i will not be able to estimate it...

yes calculated by tilers. usually they count in terms of 30cm x 30cm (which is 1 sqft) which is the most common. so if you buy bigger tiles, you can easily convert. He wanted wastage of at least 5 tiles but I bought just enough. If not enough because he damaged them, I can buy more, but he has to pay :D

I bought 9 different models of tiles so 9 x 5 x 2.5 = $112.5 (how much wastage would cost if i bought as requested, assuming each tile is $2.5) my most expensive tile cost $6 per piece.

Yes, tile supplier can estimate grout and strips. But please bring pictures of the places you intend to tile for better advice.
