gantan88 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2009 u don't really need a hood. it really boils down to your own cooking habits. if u are only doing light cooking, then don't need. if u have a steam oven, u can use it to steam anything. u can use a normal oven to bake rather than deep fry chicken wings for example. u can cook a lot of stuffs just by using oven alone. I am also toying on the idea of doing away with the hood. The hood in my previous place is also a white elephant. Collect dust only. But without it, the steam or smoke will impact your cabinet directly. So i thought maybe we can put a stainless steel backing on the underside of the cabinet, directly above where the hob is. Just like the one we usually have on the wall. If dirty, just wipe, should be easy, not ugly also because hardly visible.

You use oven a lot, electricity goes up, cos electricity is more expansive than gas. Sorry my bad, talking about elect bills again.
gantan88 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2009 I can hack it, no need permit But we shall see. 有你的。 haha. Besides not having a hood, I am also considering not having an oven. I can steam with induction, it's more efficient. Haven't baked before either. It's a lifestyle preference. Some need it, I don't. Update: MIL giving us a convectional oven. Hope it's useful, otherwise waste of space I need an oven though but have no place for it, didnt built the tall unit either. At most can only buy a microwave oven... Um... pointers worth taking note of.... if acrylic must be same colour as the wall backing... silver colour if the wall backing is stainless steel. But will the acrylic itself warp under prolong heat? We can DIY using 3M adhesive to stick? Find a place to cut the acrylic... But stainless steel more pro... :-)

In general, acrylic is not a very lasting material and very prone to stratches. Anyway, nothing last better. Edited December 18, 2009 by Mickey M

Mickey M 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 but placed under your kitchen cabinet.. prone to scratch also no problem, can't see precisely, so no problem at all. hehe.
gantan88 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 precisely, so no problem at all. hehe. actually i think it is hard to get it scratched... unless you keep hitting the acrylic when opening the wok cover, need very big motion to have the cover hiting the acrylic
