Flickering And Humming Of Downlights- Any Advice From Seniors?

Hi!

getting my new home and have 3 downlights all throughout my apartment.

when i turn them on... how disappointed i was!

They FLICKER many times before lighting up, and after they light up, they HUM! BUZZING! and its sooo irritating!

I believe they are energy saving bulbs with australian ballast. Bought from a shop near braddell. Cost me $33 bucks each. As recommended by my ID.

Anyone with more experience can advice me on what to do? I spoke to ID's electrician but he says all downlights are like that.

Should I ask the lights supplier to change the lights? Or buy a different set from another store? Get electronic ballasts?

Electronic ballasts will solve your problem. But get the better one, i.e. Philips EF-Efficiency. I can't find it though.

The australian ballast is Atco? It's highly recommended but despite its fame, it inherits all the disadvantages of magnetic ballast.

If you are game enough, change to electronic ballast on your own, save the manpower costs.

I have about 20 downlights. They don't flicker many times before lighthing up and definitely no humming sound. Suggest you get the light shop to replace those 3 sets. Alternatively test the downlights at the shop you got them.

Not sure if the dimming system LTA is referring to is built-in in the electronic ballast. Dimmable electronic ballast definitely cost more than the normal electronic ballast.

I guess the trade off for non-flickering would be decreased operational lifespan.

I suggest you get LED downlights. No humming sound.

Good for Energy saving but you have to pay much more initially.

we have 4 corner orange downlights and 8 coolwhite downlights in the living room.

when we switched on the orange lights, there is a low humming sound; when we on all the lights, the humming sound gets a bit louder.

change the bulb with another one from another downlight 1st to isolate the problem.... it could be the bulb and not the ballast... perhaps u can try calling the shop see if they will exchange for you... but maybe u have to bring down yourself...
