Changing Downlight Ballast To Electronic One

Recommended Posts

Bought a few downlights yesterday and was given Atco magnetic ballast.

One of the downlights would be used in the study room and I read that magnetic ballast causes the bulb to flicker and using electronic ballast would solve this problem.

I called the shop and they do not have electronic ballast.

I am thinking, is it possible to convert magnetic ballast to electronic kind? I searched through Philips website and it seems that the electronic ballast is pretty big, even bigger than the downlight itself based on the provided picture.

Hi all, the electrician came to install the lightings today. I couldn't find the better Philips electronic ballast (HF-Efficiency) so settled for the lousier one - Philips EB-Economy. I asked for a 18w one but the store provided me with a 36w and said it can be used despite its higher wattage.

The electrician couldn't get it to work, not trying to push the fault to him, but he couldn't figure out the connectors to plug in and even ask the store provided a manual. In the end, settled for the Atco magnetic ballast that came together with the downlight. He told me that the higher wattage rating will burn the 18w bulb, any comment? Also, he told me that the EB-Economy is for fluorescent tube and not PLC.

If anyone can show a picture of how they connect their electronic ballast, I might try modifying it on my own.

Anyone know where to get the elusive Philips EF-Efficiency ballast?
