ivy 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 thanks ivy ... how much is a fair amount to set aside? i dun think there is a standard guide, it very much decides on the individual. Maybe you can set aside an amount that u are comfortable with and try to work the addition within ur budget. in my case my VO total about $2.1K after some omission and additional. e.g of my VO is i upgraded aluminium gate to rod iron gate, I added L boxes in the rooms (which is the bulk of the VO) and can't remember what else liao hahah

rierie 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 thanks ivy ... how much is a fair amount to set aside? i think it depends on how comprehensive your quotation is - i.e. is everything that u want in the quotation aly. and it also depends on how tempted u are to add things. for us, our VO is only 1.2k cuz of the last min decision to have custom made bookshelve. if u wanna minimise ur VO, think hard of what u want in ur house first
mitlancer71 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) to date: 11 contractors met... think will have last 2 to meet before deciding le... Bro, i think you have met a little too much contractors ..... it will only confuse you with their quotes..... if they know your initial budget, they will try to either exclude certain items, change the finishes, hide some items and only reveal upon you signed up with them to create VO. To make your own life easier & prevent all these stunts from happening, its good you short-list 3-4 of them, give them a Full list of items & finishes (including those optional items to quote). Like this you can compare apple to apple. From the Full List then you slash away those you don't want. In this way, you will get to know all the rates and make it a little more difficult to slaughter you on V.O even upon signing up with them. Hope this helps Edited July 6, 2009 by mitlancer71

Hope this helps most gave us the full quotes of what we want, but some has 2-3items missing, not sure if they forget or what happened... we're already shortlisting now... about 2-3 for now already... 11 is too much? I thought it is good to have around 10 or even more? the initial few were really high..

Mine was quoted for 4 ft @ less than 600bucks, non-fire rated. some contractors will tell you the discount upon confirming their services, those prices quoted b4 discount? My quote from uncle all b4 discount and his usual practise is to give a lump sum off upon confirming so also difficult to share with u on his pricing. Cannot rule out that those missing ones are delibrately missed out in order to make their quote look competitive...... In fact, to play safe no slaughtering later, you should get them to quote for those items which you might condider adding on later. Pls take note of wat Fo4 reminded about the eletrcial part. Get a electrical price list from the ID before signing up..... Hahahaha..... 11 is alot , even some big projects don't have so much quotations & bidders...... Actually, shortlist & target at 3-4 highly recommanded ID in the forum will somehow lessen your hassles ....... Cos there are really a fair bit of dishonest, half-cook IDs
