Every time i see ya kitchen wall tile i'll just go "ahh......." arghh...so much waste from the choked pipes..previous owners weren't bothered by it? Good Morning P3nguins, The marble flooring was done up by the previous owner. We kept the marble flooring and replaced those areas that are affected by hacking. And also add new marble skirting to those new walls. Already feeling the pinch when we just do such a small scale. That day we were talking with the tiler, and he was saying that the marble flooring at our house should have costed the previous owner at least 15k. I was like... hee.. thanks.. me also go each time I see those tiles. Our sellers migrated to Australia for few years already. So they wasn't staying here and infact, we didnt see them at all during the whole purchase. It was handled by the power of attorney.
Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2009 Updates: The floor tiles for both bathrms and kitchen are all done up. Here's the pics.... Master bathrm: We told Henry and team that we wanted bases for all the pipes in the house and the bases must be round. Hee.. they really give us all rounded ones. These round bases are at the master bathroom. Common bathrm: Sorry for the dark pic. Very challenging to take a bright and clear pic for common bathrm due to its longish shape and the bright window at the corner. Here's the bases for the pipes at the common bathrm. Rounded also. Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) Updates for Kitchen: Our kitchen floor tiles: We are clueless on which orientation should the floor tiles be laid on our first meeting. Henry suggested to lay them vertical as our living tiles are in this direction. The results look good as it also seems to help make the kitchen look 'longer'. Hee.. The fridge area: Henry had instructed his guy to tile the whole 'hole'. Hee.. previously we wanted to do top cabinet, but end up, we forgo it due to that beam on top. So we were wondering if they will tiled the back of the beam since it 'unseenable' from outside. Behind the beam at fridge area: Gudos to Henry & team, the whole area was tiled. Really quite happy to see that. As we think that most contractors are likely to leave that alone since it cant be seen. Flooring at the fridge area: Previously, the flooring here was marble floor so instead of overlaying them which is a simpler job. Henry instructed his guy to cut out the marble tiles carefully and re-tile with the kitchen floor tiles. This is better as the base would not be too high but more work as the guy need to be very careful during the cut. Very nicely done. Can you see that this area is actually the dining area and not part of the kitchen previously? Edited August 18, 2009 by Rasp
Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 Issue with the common bathrm kerb Common bathrm kerb: This is our kerb at the common bathrm. We were quite puzzled to see a 'stepped' kerb on Sat. Ah hui came over to check with us if there is any issue on this. He explained that they usually do the kerb in this manner if a bi-fold door will be install later. The 'lower' step is used to accomodate the bottom track of the bi-fold door. We were surprised to see this because Henry had told us previously that our bi-fold door uses the newer mechanism which come without bottom track. So we emailed this pic + sms Henry on Sat afternoon. Henry called Hb immediately, even before he access his email to check with us. During the call, Henry explained to us that they usually do such kerb for bi-fold door with/without bottom tracks. Reason being, he had feedbacks from some owners that the water in the bathrm tends to splash out without the stepped kerb. Hence, his guys now do all the kerb for bi-fold door in this manner, but if we want to 'flatten' the kerb, he will get his guys to redo this for us. We had a bi-fold door for our master bathrm previously, but that is with bottom tracks. So we wasn't quite sure how the new door mechanism will look like. In the end, we made the decision based on these reasons; 1) Hb trusted that the kerb height is good enough to prevent the water from splashing out, 2) even if the water spilts over, its the kitchen floor that get it, so should be fine, and 3) the shower area is not directly behind the door. Hence, hb told Henry to 'level' the kerb. I went over yesterday (monday) to look see look see and surprised to find that the kerb issue is settled. Ah hui told me that he had done up the kerb in a manner where the top part slightly tilted toward the bathrm. He hoped that by doing so, can help prevent the water from spliting over. Hee.. so kind of him. Here's the redo kerb. Very neat-looking.

Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Yikes ... 15k!?!~@? hee.. thought of doing ventilation fan for toilet? Ventilation fan.... never really think of it. Are you putting for your toilet? I read previously from the forum where some said its illegal and some said its permitted. I .. but my toilet windows are up already. Guess too late to think of it. Maybe next time if got problem, then put up.
Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Updates Drainage pipe beneath the kitchen cabinet: We didn't discuss this aspect with Henry and team during the meeting. Totally forgotten about it. Was so glad that his men construct it straight as we were afraid water might not flow that smoothly if there is a turning there. Tiled pathway to the hole: Covered pathway: And finally, all covered up with opening covered by the tiles nicely. Pretty neat work. Here's my washing machine base:
Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Updates: Hee.. the balcony's floor also all done up. Sorry for the dark pic. Its actually white with faint grey lines. Hee.. luckily it kinda matches our marble floor as hb wanted the balcony area to sort of merge with the living area. Glad that we changed the tile to this instead of the initial light yellowish colour. The skirting also up. Look ok to me.
Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Updates on the marble tiling: Hee.. the marble flooring at the bedroom is completed. All the marble skirting have also been put up for those new walls. The colour of the marble for the skirting is very nice. Matches my old one too. The skirting look ok, not very fat. Hee.. They even put inside the tiny store. The progress so far is good. Hb went down yesterday and said the plastering guy already plastered quite a number of walls. He saw 6 guys at work; 2 plastering, 2 tiler and 2 workers to clean up the place. He also saw new rolls of cardboards. We are guessing that they are going to either redo the whole protection (hee.. our wishful thoughts ) or patch up/ add-on protection to those torn areas (think more likely case). Hb going to discuss electrical works with electrician this afternoon. And they are going to acid wash of the bathrooms today, to prepare for plumbering tomorrow. Hee.. my super slim store only around 1m width. We are not doing shelving, as this area is to store big & tall items e.g. ladder, dismantled bed frames etc.
satinchris 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2009 Hi Rasp It seems like you have a very good job done by your contractor. We just bought a unit that also has exactly the same marble flooring as yours. Many IDs were telling us that if we wanna hack walls and yet keep the marble flooring, they can't guarantee that the marble floor won't be damaged. They also can't guarantee finding back the same marble tiles to replace the damaged ones. But seeing yours gives me confidence to keep our marble flooring. I suppose your contractor didn't have a hard time looking for those marble tiles right? Also, what is the reason for having a base for the pipes? Thanks. Rasp 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2009 Hi Rasp It seems like you have a very good job done by your contractor. We just bought a unit that also has exactly the same marble flooring as yours. I suppose your contractor didn't have a hard time looking for those marble tiles right? Also, what is the reason for having a base for the pipes? Thanks. Hi Satinchris, Ummm.. for the reno work so far, we are happy with it. Hopefully it stays this way til the end of it. Are you hacking alot of walls? We hacked 1 wall to open the new kitchen, 1 wall to 'open' up the bedrm and going to hack 2 door frames. For these special areas, my contractor will instruct his team to cut the floor tiles before hacking. I think this is to prevent those marble tile nearby to be 'injure'. And after the hack, those area that are previously under the walls and door frame will need to be patch with new marble tiles. And like what the other IDs told you, my contractor also told us that the new marble tile may look slightly different in the colour tone as my marble flooring is quite 'old' so the colour will look 'older' than those new clean ones. I am not sure if my contractor had a hard time looking for the replacement. From what I understand from him, every marble have a special name. He told me mine previously, but I forgotten. hee.. I guess they will locate the marble tiles with their name. And yes, the new ones which he got for us are not 100% same as the old ones. This new batch came with more 'black' lines. My contractor showed us the tiles first before he instruct his team to tile them. Lastly, for constructing the pipes bases, its to ease the washing of the bathrms & balcony floor. Hee... without the bases, dust/dirt/hair will usually flow behind these pipes during washing and its not easy to sweep them out. So building the bases will prevent these. Hee..
