Retrospectrum Meets Modernisation!

NICE I love your recessed tv console. It's very neat and you certainly don't have to worry about kicking against it...

About your kitchen.. will that be enough cabinet space for you?

alright major major update!! here is my carpentry sketches from jason! pls all, any and every input will be valuable in case i overlooked something! so pls fire away!!

my tv console wall. its recessed as per my floor plan. im supposed to have more stuff on the other side of the wall but jason is not sure if it will be too cramped. so taking a rain check on that. any room for improvement? (ps: i asked him about roller shelves where the DVD players etc goes but he said those things are usually problematic)

Hi aubrey,

Did Jason tell you the reasons why they are problematic?

Do you have a sub-woofer? Where to place it if you have one?

actually i agree that the roller shelves are problematic. i have them in my current tv console now and we dun pull them out at all, cos there is no need to, as u slot the cd/dvd/vcd from the front, and not from the sides or backside! unless u have those old school vcr wereby u put the tape from above. furthermore, when u pull out the shelves, the wires will be pulled out too and if the wires are not long enough, it will be disconnected from the tv or the power point and it happened before. And also after u pull the shelf out and the wires are pulled out too, it can get a bit tricky to push the shelf back as the wires are now "loosen" and so they will "bunch" up and cause a big mess behind the players. but really, in the first place, is there a need to always pull out the player? tatz just my opionion :)

The problem of using cable length that is just nice without any allowance:P. Disconnection with just slight displacement.

Regardless whether you have shelf or not, the wires will come out together with the device when you shift the device out :)

Currently do not have any roller shelves.

Experience the problem of taking in and out my AVR. Currently AVR is about 15kg and the old one is about 20kg. So it is very tiring taking in and out and especially when the space is quite small. Maybe with the roller shelves, it will save a lot of effort.

Yes usually you dont take the AVR in and out. For me, I like experimenting with different cables, and even DIY cat5 cables.

ok.. in response to ocheeeng, bon07 has highlighted it. i feel that it makes sense and the only possible things that i have to place is prolly a dvd player, my wii and the subwoofer.. maybe on the console itself. so looking at the things i have to place, i dont think its very heavy. and i definitely want something thats easy for me to connect to. jason did mention should i want the roller shelf, he can add it on for me later. still have some time to deliberate on that.

i am ks. more storage does not hurt, but as it is my shelf space is really really limited cos of my tight space. i wanted a pantry to store dried food, biscuits etc but looks like there's no way. my mom wanted to store 2 gas cylinders! 1 for cooking 1 for standby, i voiced out against her (with the help of jason :P) so i managed to convince her to standby a tank when its close to running out (how to tell i wont know..)

i want more shelf space, but i dont see how that is possible.

i love my tv console wall too! cos its totally flush against the wall, leaving me with tons of space in my living room to play around with loose furniture bought from ikea in the future. :)

gaku07

i am not going to touch those things once installed unless there's absolute reason where i have to. until then, im happy! :P

Aubrey, the recess TV console looks good.

For kitchen, beside the fridge, can you ask for a set of 3 drawers. I can't see if it is open door cabinets or drawers. But having drawers may be good to access things. Just my 2c opinion.

If not Jason standard drawings are all 'open-door' cabinets. :)

hmm... can I 're-plan' your kitchen cabinets for you. To make it more user friendly for your mom and you. Sorry I very kay-po cos kitchen is my area and I want it to work.

So, before i sketch, I better ask you first. How?

From wendy (I am rushing out now to teach... will be back tonight to sketch for you... but my sketch not as good as Jason. But I want you to see an alternative planning)

Hi Aubrey

I deleted my ikea software so i just use simple powerpoint to draw up for you.

Akitchen1.jpg

Let me explain. Having all open door cabinets may not be very functional for a small kitchen.

Part 1 & Part 4 can be swopped.

I think having a pull out for sauces is more user friendly. So that you dont need to put your sauces into cabinets which are hard to reach. Or you end up putting at counter top (which limits the space).

This is what i install under Part 4

Since you said you wanted a pull out for biscuits, try installing baskets. Like what Angel81 did.

Here is a link to her beautiful planned kitchen. Post#827 http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?sh...8850&st=800

She bought steel baskets to hold her plates. You can buy those baskets too to hold food items.

This is Part 5 where you may need a set of 3 drawers to put your forks, spoons. The lower deep drawers can hold plates, bowls. Your mom will find this easy to use. She is getting old, so she dont need to bend down to take out bowls, plates for everyday use.

What do you think?

wendy, i am really really most touched + grateful to you for the planning on top of your own moving and all the nitty gritty cleaning u have to do!!!:bow::bow::bow::bow:

honestly i did not think much and jason sort of rushed me thru it. >:/ when i called him, he said the cabinet is completed! but if i want to make changes i can call the guy. after looking at my sketch of the kitchen from jason, yes it seems like those swing out doors and no drawers at all!!!

i think your planning is good but i was intending to have the pull out for sauce and spice rack in the middle where my food prep area & stove is. cos i will need the spice and sauce to marinate at the prep area and also when i am cooking. i told jason about it. i hope he remembers. i have drawn an alternative, very rudimentary since i do not have the luxury of time to draw it nicely for now. basically it builds of what u have planned for me. :) and our plates and bowls arent too much since there's only 2 of us, and we will need extras only when the guests come so i think 1 drawer/shelf should be able to house them all, at most 2.

here's my plan based on yours! (drawn till quite ugly)

Scan-090520-0001.jpg

notes: those diamond shaped thingy are meant to be the swing out doors where we will place items that are hardly used eg slow cooker, pots/pans, mom's knick knacks etc.

PS: may i know how much all those fittings/racks cost? we have exceeded budget. on another note, in my quotation uncle placed my measurements for kitchen at 13ft. now that they have come to take the "official" measurements, will they tell me if there's reduction to the overall measurement? could sorely use any rebates from uncle now..

aubrey needs to press her panic button.. now!

nice one. aubrey are u a right hander? if so, u might want to consider swop the spice/oil pull out drawer to the place where ur intended gas cylinder is. also u can have pull out bottom tray for ur gas cylinder?

just some thoughts :P

edited: ignore this post, just saw that the food preparation is on the left, hence the spice pull out will be on ur right. it'll be perfect...

i am a righty! well it takes some getting used to with the rack in the center of cooking and prep area. i think it should be fine. yup the moment i told jason we use gas cylinder he turned to tell the carpentry guy to do the roll out shelf for me. :D

yups, i think most important is the flow u're comfy with. i agreed with smallboy's suggestion on having drawers instead of swing doors beside the fridge.

it'll be convenient for a person to stand comfortably in front of the opening fridge and another person accessing these drawers right beside the fridge at the same time

Updates from Day 12 - 15 May 2009

My living room has been completed! but I did not take pics since that area is now covered with all sorts of materials and my kitchen & bathroom fittings that were delivered is also placed there.

pic of my skirting (for ivy to compare) it measures about 1.5cm

_MG_2490.jpg

WC & Shower area done! :D

_MG_2501.jpg

unfortunately the black tiles cant be aligned with my window, it looks odd and not centered but i guess its a matter of getting used to. and my toilet bowl is not gonna be centered due to the piping too. :( the hole is closer to the left. so odd!

_MG_2503.jpg

aubrey remember to check the plastic water drainage/outlet on the toilet floor (i dunno what's the exact term) is not stuck to any dried cement that block any of the holes else u'll have flooding when showering or u'll have problems changing it next time when it turns yellow.
