Reiki 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) Hope by posting this pic, it will provide a platform to understand 'solid plywood' when we had been quoted by our carpenters. This is actually done by our carpenter, during renovation, to let us understand the kind of wood we would be getting. In 'solid plywood', it provides durability. Plus, say if we are to knock a nail onto it [example to hang pictures], the nail will get a better grip. More plywood will, and can, be added on to the desired thickness. Hope everything will turn out good, aubrey. Edited May 26, 2009 by Reiki
mrspiglet 2 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 dun fume dun fume, check with uncle 1st ok? Mine was blockboard, i just looked back at my reno pics after reading ur thread. But i realised even wardrobe professionals like Closet Design used blockboard for my wardrobe, n it feels very solid when knocking on it - doesnt give the hollow sound. I'm not that stringent on the material used since uncle told me "if it warps, i'll redo for u". Even the wooden kitchen door he fabricated for me is super solid n heavy. Anyway its not only the top surface holding the weight of the granite top. The internal partitions also helps to even out the weight.
aubrey 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 mrspiglet, mine is not what i call super solid. its not even heavy. dare i say it feels like lifting particle boards?? i really want to get it changed now. if from they start they said its blockboard then fine. and i hope jason is not smoking me with the, they are the same thing comment. reiki yes that is what i want. the thickness looks good too! i like that! great! more picture references for me to show uncle. thank you! Hehe, more of this 'solid plywood' pics? One more with smooth side: I guess, when pieces of plywood are sticked together, the side will look smooth [and believe it was 'sand down']. Laminates are then applied. PS: These pictures are for our reference and knowledge, aubrey. They are not meant to a. upset you and b. make Uncle looks bad. Infact, I may want to recommend uncle too to some other friends in future.

gaku70 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 aubrey: Can check with you if the side of the blockboard is similar to the picture? I was reading about the blockboard and seems like it is constructed of solid wood strips between laminates like the one above. The standard thickness is about 10-25mm. BTW is Irex better hinge than what you have. Italian made right? Reiki: Your carpenter very professional. Mine didn't show me the solid plywood. Also didn't do the drawing. He used my drawings instead.

aubrey 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 ya which is basically no good. altho still plywood, its not solid plywood to me. we'll see how it goes tonight.
gaku70 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2009 aubrey: I think Reiki's solid plywood is a 9-plies excluding the face and back ply. For the one in your picture, I am not able to see the grains of the woodblock in the blockboard. You can compare with the picture that I have attached earlier. Maybe you can check tonight to confirm if it is a blockboard.
