I am a first timer and getting my house on March. Really panic now as I got no ideas how to go about designing my house. It is a resale flat, don't know whether the layout is good a not. I welcome any comments and helps from all .... Thanks

Suggested you take the floor plan goto to several Designer or Contractor ID film and walk around. Show to them and ask for quotation. Do not confirm with them no matter how convincing they are. After all, you are there to get a feel.

From there you will understand slowly, what you want after many suggestion...I was blurred at first too!!! also panic what to design

WAH your layout is NICE! Though you have a curved wall in your living but your main door opens into your large living.. and the rest of the rooms are very angular. nice!!!

If you don't have any ideas... Surf around the web. Just go to Yahoo, search for images for bedroom, kitchen, etc and start collecting photos of what you like first. And also read the forum for what needs to be done. :)

You can also approach one or two IDs (to test water) first. They will give you quotations and such. DON'T SIGN for anything yet. Just let them "teach" you some lingo. hehehhee That's what I did. :P

When you're ready with your list of things to do, then you can start your real shopping for contractors/IDs. :)

HAVE FUN!

Everyone can give an opinion freely but ultimately the choice just like your house is yours.

Some suggestions for you.

1. Do homework by reading up RenoTalk and other home-maker blogs.

2. Buy or loan some home renovation magazines to read.

3. Discuss with your family what would you like.. what is a must what is a frill.

4. Set out a budget and cater for extra just in case.

5. Talk to friends, others who have just renovated their homes.

6. Visit their houses and open your eyes when you pass by furniture shops, electrical and electronic stores.

7. Feel free to attend home exhibition but do not be tempted or pressured into signing a deal. In 2009, business would be tough and they will certainly be more "negotiable and persuasive" to make you commit. I repeat DO NOT sign up your house renovation contract at these exhibitions unless you know what you are doing. Better to discuss, deliberate then decide, never rush into it headlong not knowing where you are going.

8. Feel free to visit ID shops and renovation contractors recommended by forum folks and family/friends. Do visit the homes done up for reference and I do believe a referral is very important as a testament to the quality and reliability of an ID/contractor. DO NOT sign up until you are sure.

9. Check all terms and conditions before signing contract. Feel free to strike out those you are not comfortable with and include some of yours. Beware not to overpay deposit or for work in progress. Holding on to your cash is your only protection till the work is done to your satisfaction.

:) do you see the pink words just below?

There's a line that says "My Reno Blog: The Place...."

click on it to go to my reno blog and you can see the progress of the place.

I should be posting the completed pictures in 2 days time. I'm moving on Monday... :)

** edited: I agree with Starscream!! :) One last thing... it's always important to look for a particular person rather than a company. Some IDs are just black sheep. So when you get a referral from someone rem to ask for the ID's name. :)

OH YES. NEVER give cash to ID/contractor. That's the biggest lesson here I guess.

As I post early on.. now you can start to go to Renovation film, just go there and remember to make a photocopy of your floor plan. Dun give them original as you bought it for $5.

Walk in to any reno film and start to ask for quotation. No obligation, so dun worry. I went to IMM and Tradehub 21 and ask about 10 quotations. I cannot remember how many, maybe 15. Got others from forum one also. From there, I get an overall idea, what I actually want. Than I sit down and make phone call with my spouse and discuss what I want.

The best part, I am doing all this alone, my wife is in China. Even I buy air-con have to discuss and call. I even had to select the tiles color lei... Wo Jin Kang Kou

I think I more jia lat .. Can imagine my pressure, if i choose wrong color or wrong colors tiles, wife angry. But no choice, she cannot come over. My baby is there, I can only see them in webcam. Once my renovation is completed than they can come back
