blue_diamond 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2009 wow... so many posts after my last one.... hopefully your reno will work out fine. Uncle also said he impose fine for those smoking.......... hiaz.... in the end, he also smoke what! Yes.. take the advise of those posted here, insist they lay corrugated paper everywhere. Where your feet steps on. They didn't cover my bedrooms. Uncle has sent people to clean up the stains but well, they just can't be removed lor. I appreciate that he tried but well, they are still there. Just pretend it is part of my pattern. Mine is not a full beige or brown or white.. my homo tile has some patterns. Not too bad. hahaha.. trying to comfort myself. Like what growler says, sign up with Ah Soon ONLY if you have time and energy to chase and project mgt. If not, very heartache. And if you are a super perfectionist, forget about signing with him too. It will be too emotionally draining. For us, we are fine with Ah Soon but the little here and there (kept forgetting things) adds up to the frustrations along the journey of our reno too. We are glad we designed it ourselves, see it built before our very eyes........ and Uncle made our dream a reality. We lowered our expectations a bit here and there (which is reasonable) but somethings we can't stand, we call him to rectify and so far he has done so. But I just wish a little more time from him to project management (his workers)..... so less has to be rectified. Also from this forum, business has been soaring so he really got no time to project mgt. Hi Smallboy, glad u take thing positively...i like yr attitude..... Thanks for the kind advice...it really got me to manage my expectation abit after following your thread...got my mind to think what to expect too... great advice... I hope all goes well for u from now on...

If there's cigarette stain, he will be responsible and remove the damaged tile (if it was due to his ashes). Don't worry smallboy. After our posts, I believe the lurkers or forummers here will be more aware of the situation and hopefully they will be more informed. As mentioned, Uncle is cheap but it comes with a price - i.e. you must be present all the time to manage the workers. Be also prepared that he suddenly avoid your calls when you become too persistent (like me) ... haha ...
ocheeeng 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2009 (edited) i know the ID suppose to cover for us. In fact all the quotes that we have gotten have this item in the quotation. Some provide for free and some charge money. The ID that we more or less will engage is providing for free. But having said that, we went to this new DBSS flat in tampines during one of the visit to see workmanship and they only cover half the living room while the other half is exposed with sand, saw dust, nails and what-nots all over the place!!! we were quite shock! so to save ourselves the heartpain and $$$ to change new tiles or parquet, we rather spend a bit of money now and go cover the hse ourselves. In fact, we will drag the ID along to cover with us, to demo to him how serious we are abt protecting the current tilings and wooden floors...hehe Note that the protection (be it done by you or contractor) may be torn during renovation. You need to dilligently go and patch up the exposed parts. Edited May 18, 2009 by ocheeeng
Bon07 1 Report post Posted May 18, 2009 Actually, your contractor should do it for you. I know that my 2nd lowest quote ID will do it for me. I know that Uncle won't do it for me and I was right. He only used 1 roll of corrugated paper. Hardly managed to cover all the area. I had to use carton boxes, cardboards, newspapers, etc to cover the remaining area. If you really want to buy the plastic sheets, the contact is in my blog and the place is @ Defu Lane 1. got the address, thanks!

Smallboy 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2009 Hi Smallboy, glad u take thing positively...i like yr attitude..... Thanks for the kind advice...it really got me to manage my expectation abit after following your thread...got my mind to think what to expect too... great advice... I hope all goes well for u from now on... Good you have a balanced view of him. We are not trying to 'hack his signboard" (translate to mandarin)....... he did a lot of good things for us too. He is a honest and nice man. His standard of quality is there. But workmanship varies (depending on which team of tilers, carpentry, painters you get)......... and of course his blur blur team of electrician. And there is ONLY 1 Jason who does the drawing and the supervision of carpentry, electrical and finishing work, you can see where the bottleneck of inspection is. In life, must maintain a positive attitude or else this whole reno fatigue will kill the joy of things. Now, we are enjoying the fruits........ trying not to get too worked up over the little bits here and there. Did I tell you guys I turned painter too? I bought my own brush and did touch up after his guys came and polish the tiles. Cos the chemical solutions from the polishing splash over the edge of the wall skirting. No time to chase his guys to come back and paint. So i end up painting. Quite therapeutic for me! hahaha.......

I mean to be fair...i expect he will have certain bottleneck when he biz start to grow too big for him to handle at all.It will be tough for him to maintain certain consistency...let alone be attending to all request. He is indeed cheap and chin chye. I mean there is no best in both world...to enegage him...there will be something i need to be realistic about as well. I am just trying my very best to manage my expectation on what the road ahead. I learn alot from your blog too...more well informed on what to expect. I just hope that quality and workmanship wont be compromise no matter what. i still believe thatthere is no perfect renovation in this world. Look on the bright side...been able to project management ourself, we learn more about our home, what need to be done, make more friends and of cos, we appreciate the final product for what we have been through...not all is that bad.
