Paint Woes

Recommended Posts

Recently my ID did a 2nd layer after the 1st layer of paint

our original colour is a beautiful purplish colour

but now we noticed that the 2nd layer is bluish

it is very evident because at the corner edge, I still can see the some fine lines of the 1st layer purple

my ID and painter insists that it's the same colour

it does not make sense to me as well

how can the 2nd layer be a lighter/different shade from the 1st layer.

I suspect that the paint probably got mixed with different shades

oh yes, the 2nd layer STINKS

mine is the odourless, but after it was painted, it smelled like bread gone bad

Does paint go bad?

Is it possible that the 2nd layer be a lighter/different shade from the 1st?

ask the painter to repaint and no need to argue with them..as we are the houseowners and what for we pay money for the renovation and get such of service /standard. Refer to the painter to paint for another time in a day...it will get a better effect,as sometimes they mix up the paint with other low quality one...in order to save the cost, that's why it will get another effect after second painting

i believe there can be subtle differences in shades b/w cans. that's why technically speaking, if u are using more than one can of the same colour of paint, that you should mix the different cans together to get a uniform shade.

and paint, even the 'odourless' types will smell. give it a day or two to air out.

Yes i understand it has smell

But it is starkly different from the first layer, and it's only that room (with that particular shade) that has that smell

it smells like a football player's jersey that has not been washed for weeks!

I'm sure paint don't smell like that!

i used to work as Nippon paint's colour consultant and yes paint do gets bad.

they shld be using the same can of paint and u can ask them to show u the can of paint or you can bring the colour chart and compare it nx to the wall-it shld look the same IF it's the same colour. I am sure that sthing is wrong with the paint and even with the 2nd coat, it shldn't looked differently. of cos only that the colour will look more obvious and evenly.

Pls ask ur painter to repaint it...

Hey,

- 1st paint commonly refers 2 e base coat. Commonly & widely use is 'Super White Emulsion Paint' by Nippon, regardless u r choosing ICI or Nippon paint s e final color.

- 2nd paint commonly refers 2 e 1st coat. It is e exact color u see on e paint booklet. In fact, it shd b slightly thicker or brighter in color.

- 3rd paint commonly refers 2 e 2nd coat or final coat. It is e exact color u see on e paint booklet. In fact, it shd b e same color s e 1st coat after it dries.

- wen e paint is stil wet, e appearance of e newly painted tends 2 look different. After it had dried, e correct color wil appear.

- by rite, wat color 1 chooses frm e paint booklet is wat 1 gona see at end of day s e end product. In some cases, e end product may appear richer in color due 2 natural or mechanical lighting.

- 2 cut cost or rather recycle left over paint frm previous jobs, some painter use e 'left over' & mix & match 2 meet e client's chosen color. Dis 1 can b seen during day 1, wen e cans of paints arrived, b4 e painters start work. E paint cans shd b new, had neber been opened. Whether e can of paint had been used b4 anot, any layman can tel frm there.

- a professional way of painting is 2 pour e paints 1 gona use in2 a big container & paint frm there. So dat watever unused which is untouched in e new container, can b kept by u for future usage.

- if e painter gona paint direct frm e new can, gota make sure he finish e whole can. If not, after he paint e 1st coat, he gota wait it 2 dry b4 2nd coat. Meanwhile, he washes e same brush by running water & uses it 4 another color.

- although e brush is left 2 dry, dis is e time e mildly wet brush cums in2 contact wif e paint.

- once paint cums in2 contact wif water, there wil b chemical reaction over time, u wil definitely smell wat u had described, e sweaty jersey.

- new paint in e container which did not cum in2 contact wif water, wif proper storing, can b kept for yrs.

- if e 1st & 2nd coat cums frm e same container, dat means e painter had unintensionally or carelessly let e paint cums in2 contact wif water. Evidently, e 2nd coat had been mixed wif water, frm purplish becums bluish.

- watever painted canot b undone. No pt arguein who's rite who's wrong. My suggestion is 2 demand ur ID & painter 2 paint it 2 ur chosen color which is reflected in e booklet.

- last resort, get a new can of paint. Worse 2 worse, hold on ur payment.

- olso, if end of day u gona touch up e edge on ur own, gota do it very thin & 1 time. If not u wil see e patches at diferent angle, b it by brush or roller or sponge.

hey guys,

I understand regarding paint, when wet looks dull, but it's nothing like it

anyway, I met up with the painter boss

One look and smell and he knew that the paint has gone bad

He has kindly disposed of the bad paint and have offered to repaint the affected walls with a fresh can

The first layer is up and it's a stark difference,

now it's beautiful, just like when they first painted the 1st layer the first time

Thanks to all who advised!

Cheers,

Zhong
