Discussion On Downlights

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking into installing downlights for my new place. Now deciding whether to go with the more widely used PLC type or the newer CFL type.

From reading this and other forums, here's what I found on the two types:

- PLC bulbs come with external ballast so if ballast fails, will be harder to change; CFL bulbs come with built-in ballast so easier to change

- PLC bulbs will flicker slightly before turning on; CFL bulbs turn on instantly

- PLC bulbs have longer lifespan compared to CFL bulbs (?)

- PLC bulbs have more consistent brightness compared to CFL bulbs (?)

- PLC bulbs are cheaper than CFL bulbs

I'm not sure how much of the above is true, especially the 3rd and 4th points. Anyone care to comment?

Thanks!

Get CFL. PLC ballast uses more electricity as it generate more heat. CFL's light is flicker-free as it uses electronic ballast built into it, gentle to the eyes. For the same power used, CFL will be slightly brighter too. Cheers.
