Mandy & Lincoln - Renovating Our First Home

Recommended Posts

why don't you do a comparison between the curtain quotes for the same type of material? This way you can find out whether it is consistent in the pricing or whether you're being a carrot head kena chop.

This is easier to find out how much difference & also better this way to do research on the types of material you want. For eg; the disadvantages vs the advantages for the type of curtains you want?

I have roller binds installed in the bedrooms & study room. Only the study room is without blackout material.

It is much more easier & simpler to have roller binds since I do not have to wash them like normal curtains. Just clean or vacuum the dust off. :)

Btw, your yellow kitchen is so sunny looking, I like! $550 for the glass partition alone only? Does it include the cost of hacking part of the wall for it?

after comparing a few shops, realise cheapest place to get curtains is clementi shop. but the prob is, dey dun have much 100% blackout night curtains. found a few not 100% blackout at 15buck-20bucks/m. based on 15bucks/m, it'll cost me 798, n based on 20bucks/m materials, it'll cost me 1000 to do 2curtain - 5mX2.8m & 3.5mX2.8m. shop is not so professional. very messy in my opinion with the way they handle customers.

another shop mgl curtain at eminent plaza charges 1050 for the same curtain at 20buck/m material. while holly interior charges 1198 based on 17bucks/m material. most likely i'll be going for mgl curtain on the curtains.

as for roller blind. based on the same materials i found at the abv 3shops, diff shop charges diff price, for YES!! de same thing! 6.50 for tat material at mgl curtains, 5.50bucks at clementi shop n 5bucks at holly interior. n of cos the better choice will be to get my roller blinds from holly interior at tanglin.

so i'll be shopping at 2 diff shops, mainly mgl curtain n holly interior. but if i happen to find another nicer n cheaper shop, den i'll juz have to go them. :dancingqueen:

Thanks all for your inputs.

BunBun, good suggestion...I will try to narrow down a few favourite fabrics and compare prices.

Mwerkz, thanks for the useful rec, I will go and check them out.

I have a modest budget for curtains, around 1.5K for:

1. Full length curtains for living rm

2. Full length curtains for MBR

3. Roller blinds for WIW and Study room

You think the budget is reasonable enough to find something nice? Also, how do I judge the workmanship of curtains?

mmycheng, your budget should be okay though. You have to be prepared to do alot of comparisons to get a very good deal for the materials you want. For me, I spent around 1k+ SGD (RM 2.4K) just for the following things from a curtain maker in JB:-

Living room - Double tracks, 1 set of curtains & 1 lace curtain

1 set of String Curtains for living & dining area

Roller bind w/o blackout for study room

Rollerbind w total blackout for 3 bedrooms & 1 side curtain for the window ledge in the MBR.

http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?sh...12538&st=80

Also you have to consider the following things for your budget like :-

1. Are you having double tracks or single track for living room? Double tracks usually with lace curtains & main curtain set.

3. Roller binds, are you having blackout material?

To judge the workmanship of the curtains, have to see if the curtain extends fully to the desired width of the tracks when drawn, the sewing workmanship cannot be sloppy to the point that can see edges sticking out where it should not be seen. Full length curtains does not have to be necessary touching the floor totally. It can be slightly above the floor surface.

Thanks all for your inputs.

Thank you...these are really useful advice!

Not nec to have blackout materials...my preference is to have day and night curtains for the living rm but only the single type for the MBR. However, if the cost is the same for the single or double track for curtains, then can do the latter so I have room to manouvere if I change my mind later. Hee :P

Porkypig, where did you get your curtains done?

BunBun, can you pass me the contact for your curtainmaker in JB?

Thanks!

Curtains! :bath::bath::bath: Curtains!

Armed with advice and recommendations, my hb and I went curtain hunting today and we decided to get them from MGL. Nonetheless, I shall briefly document my finds based on 3 curtain shops for your info or reading pleasure.

1. Chai Eng Seng Trading @ Jurong West St 41

- Friendly old towkay Mr Ui served us

- Very willing to pull out book after book of fabric designs to show us; even bothered to show us the workmanship

- Found a nice textured curtain fabric from Royal Urban collection; listed price was $26 per m

- Prices for roller blind collection we were interested were from $7.50 - $11 per sq ft

- Will come to house to take measurements and provide a quote with no obligations from owner

Overall evaluation: pricey for a neighbourhood outfit

2. Blinds Gallery @ Jln Berseh

- Boss Robin served us; friendly greetings and showed us to his fabric collection and told us to feel free to browse through his books

- Found same textured fabric from Royal Urban; listed price was $23 per m

- For roller blinds, able to provide black coloured tracks plus small weight added to the drawstring

- For tracks, will provide better quality materials as well

- Made it clear to us right at the start that he was not willing to do house visits to take measurements unless we showed we were serious buyers, provided a quote based on floorplan instead.

Overall evaluation: Not for window shopping but a good place to go if you have narrowed down your favourite fabrics from other places and would like to throw in little 'extras' in the finishes. Prices are reasonable for those not on a tight budget.

3. MGL Curtain & Furnishings @ Eminent Plaza

- Young friendly chap called Andrew served us

- I told him I wanted to look for the same textured fabric from Royal Urban and was very willing to spend time searching his collection for it. When he eventually found it, he also suggested similar designs for comparisons.

- Provided a quote from floorplan

- Price for same fabric was lowest at $22 per m. Prices for same specifications were comparatively lower than the others.

- In the end, for the same budget, we were able to get better quality fabrics from Europe instead of just Taiwan.

Overall evaluation: Excellent for budget conscious people. Don't expect any frills tho.

Our buy today came up to $1580 after discount and they include:

1. Installation of double tracks + full length night curtain for living room (German fabric from Sutra collection)

2. Installation of single track + full length night curtain for MBR (German fabric from Sutra collection)

3. Installation of L-bracket roller blind track + half-length blackout roller blind + black coloured tracks (European fabric from Solar collection)

4. 2 sets of half-length roller blinds + white coloured tracks (Taiwan fabric)

All in all... it was a tiring but satisfying day. :P
