Topspin 1 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 (edited) As a means to cut cost, my renovator suggested that I do not hack the existing bathroom wall tiles. Instead he will apply a layer of special compound on the tile then plaster it. To keep it clean and water proof, he proposed painting with glossy (enamel) paint. Anyone used this method before? What's your experience/comments? Will it last? Any mildew problems, harder to clean than tiles? Need urgent advice as I need to finalise the renovation soon. Thanks. You will need to re-paint every now and then.... thru my experience...it will grow mold and algae easier than tiles... and if you don't clean it asap..it will turn black...and leave black holes in the painted wall... This might not be a good idea to go for.... unless you are prepared to re-paint it every year....
yoongf 11 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 There is no way u can get a 5 star look with painted tiles. It will flake, moldy etc. Rather leave old tiles alone, and paste stickers/ fixtures/shower curtain/wooden trellis to distract from any perceived eye sore. Topspin 1 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Thanks all for the comments. Unfortunately the condition of the present tile is very bad, gouting very black, tiles discoloured with age, etc, no way it can be easily disguised with stickers. It has an ugly bamboo image on each tile yeucks!! It would feel "dirtly" showering in that bathroom. I am still keeping my options open for the time being but noted the shortcomings listed above. Hope some one else has a positive experience with this in addition to the cost savings.
