inu 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2008 I am planning on custom build a sliding bookshelf with dual layer. The back layer of the book shelf will be divided into 3 columns, whereas the front layer will be 4 separate columns. 2 columns will be on top and 2 will be below, which will be allow to slide freely. The measurement was 9 feet x 7 feet x 16 inches ( L x H x D ) and we were quoted around 2.4k. It will look like the following bookshelf in the pics. Can someone tell me if its worth the price. jpcc 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Maybe someone can comment better on the quote. (just chirping in ) 1) Using any glass? 2) Exotic wood, or plain wood/ planks and veneer? 3) Did carpenter mention any construction difficulty? or this is normal quote.... JuzChris 1 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 I had a customed made bkshelf as well.. abt the same size (can't recall the exact measurement though) paid ard 2.1K few yrs bk. I think it is worth as i can untilize the full space till ceiling height & my spouse hv tons of bks to store. Do consider on the nos of glass panel u intend to use (cleaning is one issue & hsekeeping of bk will seem messy if not properly display/ arranged).

(just chirping in ) 1) Using any glass? 2) Exotic wood, or plain wood/ planks and veneer? 3) Did carpenter mention any construction difficulty? or this is normal quote.... Ops ahaha.. Actually i had never ask what type of woods will be used. Cant even tell which is what. hee.. Actually, i had no intention of installing any glass panel, wanna keep it as a open concept. The outer layer of the book shelf was suppose to be for novels and comics, whereas the inner layer are meant for reference books and magazine. I want the book shelf partition layers to be adjustable, as and well its require. So i had actually suggested to use "railway track" for each individual layers of shelving, but the contactor had rejected the idea. As he felt that it might be too weak to support the weight of the books. From what i understand each individual column will be ard 33inches in lenght. I had been to those comic shops and book store for on sight review, somehow they all seem fine. So i am hoping for someone here who might had faced the same situation to share with me your experience or even advise.
jpcc 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2008 (heard it from the carpenter, so u derive your own conclusion) depends on whether you choose the wood with PVC veneer, or wood with customised veneer. When u choose your own customised veneer, it means carpenter needs to manual stick the veneer to the plank of wood. If you choose open concept for your book shelf, carpenter needs to also stick the veneer to those visible exposed shelf. (more service) Sliding door also more expensive cuz involves more material / installation. Problem with sliding door is during closing, the door will hit the side wood. If u use a stick on door stopper, it will introduce a gap.

Actually my inner layer of the book shelf are meant for reference bks and study materials. Whereas the sliding book shelf are only meant for those manga. I am planning to get a open concept book shelf. Btw what is veneer? Is it that piece of things stick outside the wood.
