Cement Base For Kitchen Cabinets - Necessary?

Recommended Posts

Was wondering whether the cement base for kitchen cabinets is a necessity? Thinking of getting the Ikea kitchen and from what I understand, the cabinets sit on 'legs' disguised by wood skirting. Wonder if there any major disadvantages as compared to a cement base I should be aware of...

if cabinet sits on base, then no need to clean the underneath. Otherwise it'll be home to lizards, cockroaches to roam the land.

A base is used so that a floor wash does not get splashed onto the cabinets..

I think it's not necessary. We don't wash our kitchen floors, just mop.

My 1st house's kitchen base are not cement, only wood and "paste" with tiles outside. so far serve us well.

Wood legs with wood skirting are called plinths, Ikea's also have stainless steel legs I think.

Like starscream mentioned, the base is there so that the kitchen cabinet is sort of "suspended" and pouring the water onto the floor to wash the flooring, will ensure that the water will not splash too much onto the cabinet since laminate covering does warp & wood will rot if come into contact with water frequently.

If not, you just need to take proper care for the kitchen cabinet by wiping away any moisture or water on it.

just to share with you why is it impt for my house to have the cement base:

1) dun need to clean much 8|

2) serve as a support to cabinets

3) when washing, water will not splash onto cabinets..

think more or less same like some of them mentioned..

some will not like the base as they would say old fashion la so up to individual...

just my 2cents worth :yamseng:

I'm also in similar dilemma: whether or not to have a base.

To me:

- it is old fashion

- i just wet mop, never wash floor with water

Does it add any extra cost to reno? how much?

for me is necessary, its easier to maintain (dust, lizard, water etc)

its impossible to move ur kitchen cabinet every year or anyhow u want. but for fridge and washing machine i think its not neccesary cause u can buy and change washing machine and fridge more easier than built kitchen cabinet :notti:

so cement base for kitchen cabinet necessary?? YES
