Need Advice On Lighting

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I need a ceiling hung dining light but noticed that a lot of models are using halogen bulbs. As such, they tend to emit heat and i think it'd be unbearable if the aircon is not on. Is it common to use halogen lights for dining piece? Are halogen bulbs lasting? Is energy consumption high?

definitely very high energy consumption. as to how long they last, it's average, but energy saving bulbs last longer.

think u know the answer already... halogen lights are energy hungry stuff. Unless your lamp only uses like 1 or 2 bulbs, then it's still not too bad.

Typically halogen bulb is used for lighting effects, coz the light is yellowish, and bright and bulb is compact small. Energy saving bulbs in order to achieve that kind of brightness, needs to be pretty big. So normaly it's used for spot lights.

Not advisable to use halogen as dining light coz dining light is quite frequently switched on. Your energy consumption will be high.

Hi allykat, there are also energy saving compact fluorescent dining table lights available in the market and a lot of designs.

Basically, the reason for using Halogen lamp is because of the nice cosy warm color and it sparkling light it can give. But halogen lamp usually last only 2000 burning hours whereas a compact fluorescent can last u about 8000 burning hours.

As in why is a energy saving compact fluorescent lamps being called a energy saving lamp is because with the small wattage (usually around 13W-18W) it produce the same brightness as an incandescent lamp of 100W. Plus it give out lesser heat during operation. The energy saving is usually compared to incandescent or halogen.

Therefore halogen is not brighter than fluorescent, in fact fluorescent is the most efficient lamp available on earth as at now.

So depend on whether do you need the beatiful spark and color or you would rather have less heat and save the earth (by saving energy). :)

my bro's hse uses halogen light for dining area also..there are abt 6halogen lights there. Within a short period, all the halogen lights overheated and cant be used anymore.

His bedroom uses halogen light too. also, after awhile it spoilt also. Ended up the whole piece of lightings need to be changed. Cost him extra $ to change non-halogen type

some things are nice but not lasting.. :(

if you want good lighting effects, use tungsten better than halogen

Tungsten lights can emit nice effects too, but not as good as halogen
