Cherry 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2008 Hi, Is it necessary to do the rewiring for my 12 yrs resale 5A unit? My contractor told me it's not necessary as 12 yrs is still relatively ok. But my friends has been telling me, safety 1st as hers fused off at the 14th yr and she has to do rewiring which is very troublesome as she's already staying in the unit. Thank you. yokine9a 1 Report post Posted May 31, 2008 12 yrs is still considered alright and rewiring is not really necessary. People usually do rewiring after 20 yrs. Most people won't bother to do rewiring even thou they have been living in the house for 30 yrs. However, you might want to get your contractor to check the existing wiring work to ensure there is no cable tapping work. Another qtn is, how long do you plan to live there? 10 yrs? 20 yrs? If you are going to stay there for long, then either do the rewiring couple of yrs later (which could be a troublesome work just like your friend encountered), or do it now. pro2 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2008 Hi Cherry, I would generally suggest to you to do rewiring for the whole house to save the trouble & hassles in future whether you intend to stay in that place for long term or for short term.

If you have the cash then do it now, but i agree with yokine9a, i really do not think it is necessary, as 12 years is not considered a long time. all my relatives stay in their houses for more than 20 years also no problem. I just bought one 28 years old one, the wiring is so old, Singtel could not start up phone and broadband. They had to call in the whole Rewiring Team. I am sure the Electrical System is in same bad ancient shape as the Telecommunications System. When I leave the place, I make sure to Off the power at the Mains. First thing Monday, I am going to go out and buy Fire Insurance. Don't laugh, my friend's office caught fire last month...... fire originated from a lightswitch. Poor quality wiring. Cherry 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 Thanks for all your advices! We don't know how long we'll be staying here though maybe short term (5-10 yrs). First thing Monday, I am going to go out and buy Fire Insurance. Don't laugh, my friend's office caught fire last month...... fire originated from a lightswitch. Poor quality wiring. That is a MUST. I bought my fire insurance since day 1 for my 1st flat even though it's new. Better don't take chances.
