CutePinkElephant 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 Sorry for interrupting but a question you might be interested in too. What's the worst thing that can happen if you're a newb and you want to DIY paint your own home?? to cutepinkelephant : You're going to DIY paint your own home, but are you going to engage contractors in other aspects like carpentry etc.? I was wondering in let's say my current home is not move-in condition and needs major hauling, so i think it's unlikely for the painting to be done by myself since i already engage contractors to do the whole house? thanks, it means if i do reno whole house is better let the contractors to do the painting? ok noted
TYM 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 Somethings to consider: 1. When are you going to do the painting? Before Carpentry? After all the work done? 2. If before carpentry, how long do you think you will take? 3. Will it affect your work schedule? Are all your other contractors informed? Are they available? 4. A second coat after all the work done? Yes you can save but at what opportunity costs? You probably need to take leave to paint. Being inexperience, you probablty need to spend more time, and with questionable finishing quality. Not forgetting the prep work and the correct type of paint to choose. 4-rm might look small but once you are in it, you will start to wonder why the place suddently become so "big". And yes, it is back-breaking work. I done it before for my mum's 4-rm flat and dun think will try again .

BunBun 5 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 Let's just say, the worst scenerio might be spending more $$$ on top of the $ spent on paint, brushes, to rectify any big boo hoo if you don't know how to rectify it in the end. But everyone learns through trial & error in the end so there's no real loss, just that you get to learn plenty in terms of reno. Sorry for interrupting but a question you might be interested in too. BunBun 5 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) Like some forumers mentioned, if you and your family have the time to DIY painting for the house, then you guys can go ahead with it. Any ocassion be it CNY or not, its also up to you based on your preference. But its not advisable if you don't have alot of time & rushing to move in asap. Then you guys will be in a real rush to paint this and there. Plus you need to take leave to oversee house matters too. Besides house painting will take you about 2 weeks - 1 month depending on your pace. So again it is also up to you to decide if you want to engage a contractor or house painters to do the painting isit right if i said if we do reno for whole house its better to let contractor to do the painting , but for some occasion like CNY we can DIy?? patsy_sg 1 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 hi just to share, hb and i painted our entire EA ourselves, 10 yrs ago, and repainted it every twice since. When I say everything i mean including plastering and sanding all the walls in the entire house! But plastering was the first time only because hb was very finicky about the smoothness of the walls. It was fun though and really gave a sense of achievement when the last brush stroke was done.... if you really want, start by room, the impt ones first.. and make sure you paint the whole wall in one go rather than in portions so it will come out even. I think we have some brushes and sponges and paint trays from our last painting job last Dec, if you wnat i can give them to you...

xaleysan 2 Report post Posted May 28, 2008 hi! I've been getting a lot of useful information from this forum and hope to contribute by sharing my experience. Hubby and I painted our newly bought resale 4-rm flat. We only painted on Saturdays only, so we took a couple of weeks to complete. It was ok, as we were not really in a rush to move in. We patched and smoothened the walls before painting and came to know "every crack and hole" in the wall. It was VERY tiring (esp for the man, who would presumably do most of the ceiling), plus the fact that our unit is on the topmost floor, so ceiling is higher. Saved about $1K, which we used to buy more stuff, but the moment we finished the last panel of wall, the feeling and look on our faces was indescribable..hehe...mixed with satisfaction and relief. For buying the paints, we found that prices are quite controlled and HDB shops sometimes are more expensive! For Nippon, some colours are exclusive to shops like Home Fix and Self Fix and are not found in the main paint colour catalogs. Eventually, we used ICI online colour consultation and bought ICI paint for the walls. We realised we would have saved a little by ordering ICI paints over the ICI website, compared to what we bought from a shop Jln Bersah...and we wouldn't have to carry the heavy cans around, since delivery is free if you buy more than 20 litres of paint online. So, no harm checking it out if you are planning to DIY your painting! Was definitely a learning process and we got some tips and pointers here and there from paint sellers. Would DIY painting again in future if I have the time and energy!

Is it difficult to DIY patch and smooth the walls? Where did you get the plaster (is it what it's supposed to be called?) and how much did it cost you?
