I agree with you we cannot 100% rely on our ID even though my ID is quite a responsible man.

Now that the reno is progressing, we are all set to scout for the perfect furnishing that will make our home complete.

our initial idea was to have the living area designed with urban brick walls and retro modern furnishings. in the end, we decided against the brick wall and settled for a 3D mock-granite feature wall. with our dark wood floor and neutral white walls, i realised what we needed was bright splashes of colour.

what we've been eyeing

Evov Sofa

purplesofa.jpg

i love love the colour purple. the actual sofa came in grey tones, beige, red..the usual colours. called the lady and asked if it can be custom-made in purple fabric and the answer was yes. although my heart is set on this, we are still deliberating whether the price is worth it. FH dont seem too keen though.

Kartell FL/Y Pendant Lamp

flypendent.jpg

since our dining set is a white round table with four panton chairs, we needed some colourful lightings.

from the get go, ive already told myself that we need at least ONE kartell item in our house. We must ! We must ! ..cos kartell's the KING.

Eames White Rocker

to complement the purple sofa in the living area. am still thinking whether i should get a white ottoman to go with it as well

Anthropology Shelves

shelf_white.jpg

instead of side tables in the living area, am thinking whether we should get shelves instead. it is modular and can be arranged in various ways. will be used to place colourful vases and lamp.

yep..i know! I was actually surprised they didn't do it here....i think everyone is so used to the 3D drawings here tho... but i love being able to actually see and feel the material before it's put into my house! specially the paint on the walls... when i did our place up before in the states the ID painted the actual colour I choose on wood planks so i could see the actual effect, and draped the upholstery/curtain fabrics beside it.. and put the flooring under it... so you could actually see and visualize everything! great job tho!!!! your ID must have loved you for it :D

I guess that’s the problem they have here. Here, basically you take a package and most of the time, the design and services comes in cookie cutter sizes. when my id took on this project, he did not even asked me what was the theme i was going for and the 3d design given was standard - only the built-ins items was customised to my specifications...Everything else came from the image resource library, even after providing him the design brief.

I could not even conceptualize how my home was going to look like so in the end I took things in my own hands -- by editing the 3D artwork myself and giving it back to him.

But hey, it could be only my own personal experience and it could be different for everyone else ? I just feel that as a first-time home owner, I’d appreciate if the designer could be as passionately involved in your home renovation as you are.

haha, we didn't even ask for 3D... i actually had a super hard time finding someone who was willing to work with me because i didn't want any cookie cutter (great term) designs... specially coz i had a lot of existing stuff i wanted to bring with me.. along with loads of artwork collected from our travels... so when an ID asks me if i wanted a resort theme.. mine would be resort-ish.. but not really... not a lot of them got what we wanted until i found the firm doing my reno now (actually found 2 of them out of the 40+ i spoke to!!) I should update my blog but am so busy packing i ony have time to partially spam in teh office ! But your house does look great!!

Hi Strychnine, you have exquisite taste I must say. I kinda agree with your ID experience. You will find 9/10 ID giving you the same ideas and concepts. Actually, my future place is very small...thus I do not want any drama-rama. I have the exact theme and idea in mind...which the ID could not subscribe too. Some time I wonder why we are even going for an ID to begin with. If it's not for the job supervision and follow-up, I would have consider a contractor. Btw, Kartell items are not 'long lasting', so to speak. They are easily scratched and cracked...thus the beautiful display life is usually not long.

Hi Patsy, I salute your perseverance in seeing 40+ ID. Just that handful of 6-8, my FH and I are already exhausted :( So who are the 2 which really stood out from the rest? Just curious :)
