Additional 1k Cost To Dispose Laminated Flooring?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

One of the ID that I spoke to told me we will need to pay additional cost for disposal of laminated flooring. It is around 1k for disposal of 3 BR floors as they will need to bring these "wood" to a special disposal site and they are being charged per basket of wood that they dispose. Can anyone pls advise me if this is true or that ID contractor just want to earn my money? Thanks Thanks

Don't fall for the trick. Any ID who gives this sort of answer should be suspect. In fact, I found the price variation between IDs/contractors for the same job so huge that I wld advise all to get different quotes as much as possible. Otherwise it is easy to get slaughtered. And get rid of IDs who give ridiculous reasons to justify their pricing!

As an example: I got a separate windows quote by email (from PG, recommended by a forumer) to compare against another quote from my ID. I needed only to replace the windows minus the grills, as I decided window grills made me feel "locked-in" :P .

Surprise, surprise -- PG quoted me $2,334 vs $1,300 from my ID's contractor (plus ID markup) for the same exact job!! I expect to see a difference, but not that huge! I was outraged!

PM me if you wish to see the PG email quote and my ID's pricing.

Oh yes, PG will justify its higher price with the usual "our aluminum is thicker, our glass is superior, etc", blah, blah, as if all customers are born suckers.

There is the rubbish/myth I read on this forum that you get what you pay for, meaning higher price equates to better quality!:sport-smiley-003:

Where is the logic? We get good quality and workmanship only if we get good workers. Materials play a part in some respect, sure, to a limited extent, but their role have been inflated/distorted by dishonest salesmen. Good workers who take pride in their work will not cheat by using inferior materials -- that has been my experience.

Anybody who still doubt on the materials' role can see the windows made by my ID contractor: well made, materials as specified by HDB/BCD, even with thick felt (??) and rubber lining to give a good seal against dust and air draft from outside the flat.

I have more examples (eg granite flooring $2,800 from one ID vs my ID's $5,000, later cut down to $3,800 which I accepted, but that is another story), but do not wish to detract from the original poster's query. :P

From what I understand, this may not be entirely false. According to NEA, waste is classified into 3 types:

(a) TYPE A WASTE

Inorganic waste. This includes construction debris, excavated earth, tree

trunks, discarded furniture, appliances, wooden crates, pallets and other bulky

items destined for disposal.

(b) TYPE B WASTE

Organic waste. This includes food and other putrefiable waste from domestic,

trade and industrial premises, markets and food centres.

© TYPE C WASTE

This includes:

(1) Sludge from water treatment plants, grease interceptors, water-seal

latrines, sewage treatment plants, septic tanks or other types of

sewerage systems.

(2) Waste from sanitary conveniences in ships and aircraft.

So you waste is classified under Type A. But they also dictate the following:

In addition to separating waste according to class of licence, the general waste collector

shall screen the waste collected and ensure that it is further separated into two categories:

(a) incinerable waste; and

(b) non-incinerable waste.

The general waste collector shall ensure that only incinerable waste is sent to the

incineration plants for disposal.

Non-incinerable waste shall be brought to Tuas Marine Transfer Station or other places

specified by the Director General for disposal.

The general waste collector shall not mix incinerable waste with non-incinerable waste.

Non-incinerable waste includes the following:

Waste such as construction debris, earth, concrete, stone, sand, sludge, ash, slag and

big metal pieces (e.g. washing machines, refrigerators, bicycles, motorcycles, metal

chairs, wire rope, spring mattresses, tyre rims, large drums or containers, etc).

So in this case, your wood cannot be mixed with other debris (maybe from your hacking of the wall) and need to be send to different places to dispose, thus incurring additional cost (for separate trips and to pay the different disposal area). I believe dumping is not free (cannot be sure of this though).

oh. thanks a lot for the replies.. I think I shd get more quote to have a better idea of the price range.. Bluefly, can you send me yr ID contractor details? I seem to have prob with the PM function. Thanks

teacubet@gmail.com

Keltong, I also vaguely remember seeing the different type of classification of waste sometime ago and I know govt do charge for disposal for certain substance. But 1k plus seem a lot.. and I thought these type of wood can be recycled?

I reallly want to change the BR floor coz they are of 3 different colour for the 3 BR (I prefer uniformity).. but if they really come at such a huge cost... haiz.. :bangwall:

Will really welcome more comments to see if any of you heard such things.. thanks a lot :bangwall:

Yeah...price wise I cannot advise since I have not gotten quotes on this before, but 1K seems a little on the high side, getting a few quotes to compare is definitely a wise things to do.

I understand about uniformity, I wouldn't want my 3 BR to look different colors too...a little to much....what I did previously was one color for all the BRs, and one for the living room.

dun get conned!:bleah:!

my contractor was also throwing lots of wood and laminated platform from my home. and he mentioned he needs to bring to a proper place to burn and he's paying about $150 per tonne

Take note, its only about $150 per tonne! not $1k!:)

obviously my contractor never ask for extra $$ from me..... its all inside his quotation.

so yr bloody ID is conning you..........

since we are on this topic of IDs...... i can never understand why so many of forummers here are using IDs to do their homes?

For every $20,000 quote, their pure profit margin is already $5K? for what? for their 'great' designing ideas?

no offence here, but it seems most of forummers are only getting HDB flats, 75 sqm to 120 sqm..... how 'great' the IDs' ideas can be to do up pigeon holes?

for small spaces, the individua flat owners should already have their designs ideas on their and they can just get a normal contractor to do.

and not only this, most of the forummers got conned by paying $1000 for some 3D designs from IDs????

i'm so shocked by this!!! you dun need some silly 3D designs just to see how the designs will look like in a 75 sqm to 120 sqm??

just use some common sense and basic creativity brain juice..... you can already see how the ideas will look like........ no need to pay $1000......

i really find it very disgusting.........

Relax donut88. Some ID will be able to give excellent idea on how to make use of small spaces. Not everyone has creative juices oozing out from their brain, and many are first time owners who have no idea what to do to the flat.

If you have the budget, engaging a good ID can really help to make you house look different and make it feel comfortable. You can really see a different from a well done up place to an average looking place.

However, as in everything, there are the good ID and the bad ones, some are out con while some are out to help. Recommendation from someone you trust is good.

I am usually on tight budget so I do not engage ID for my house reno, but it does not make engaging an ID disgusting. Some have the time, some have the money, some have both, and some have none. No one is the same.

Hi!

Would you mind to name this exhorbitant ID for the benefit of other members? If this is his modus operandi by preying on the fear or ignorance of consumers then you would save others alot of grief later.

Ho Bee is charging me $180 to remove old kitchen cabinet + dispose off, and another $150 for clearing other debris off my flat. And my old kitchen cabinet is a very small one, about 5 feet long. If a reliable contractor like Ho Bee is also charging 2 separate sum for disposing diff rubbish, then maybe they really have to dump those stuff at diff locations :furious:

Just to share with you my experience.

My furniture contractor asked me what I plan to do with the old wardrobe. They could dispose for me at $200. I bargained and got it at $150.

So they dismantled the wardrobe & brought it down to the lift landing & went on to install my new wardrobe. After the job is done, they just left. I called them about the wood planks & they told just me that the bangla will take care of them.

Gosh! I paid them $150 just to dismantle. Disposal is by the Town Council.

Maybe you should call your TC and tell them that your furniture contractor just dispose the whatever is left of the wardrobe indiscrimately. :notti: See what they say.

The Bangla quite happily take them away cos these are recyclable materials & worth something.

BTW, Aljunied TC offer free service of bulk disposal of old furniture.
