Yep, it was suggested by the ID because we thought we had lots of things to store. haha. Now we're left with excess storage space. We didn't know that the canopy could be used to store things too until we opened one of their display units. heh. Well, ours is not for decor purposes too; we relied on the tiles for that. Anyway, I'm sure given your great DIY skills, you'll make your kitchen lovely in the end! . All the best ya? Edited August 2, 2008 by warsurfer
BunBun 5 Report post Posted August 2, 2008 I must say your home is very nice, warsurfer. Looks very very cosy & homey to curl up at home! It would look more inviting with a fireplace & the 4 seasons.
piggiedearz 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2008 hey warsurfer! ur hse's veri nice! so so cozy n nice to live in. where did u get ur standing lamp and how much? i'm searching for standing lamps but all veri modern looking and not cheap either. ur custom made sign is so unique.. where did u make them? we hv the same chair pads, ikea toilet flowery cabinet and table cloth haha. seems like in sg, country stuffs are so limited that most of us wld hv a few same items. that ikea cabinet my 2 other country friends also have Piggiedearz, how about doing stencils for the canopy area which you want to decorate? Or alternatively, do it up with a small wreath of daisies or sunflower(Maybe artificial ones) how to do stencils ar? can teach me? stencils will be gd as they wont fade (with lacquer) n easy to clean. for wreaths i only hv an xmas one hahaha. meant for living room
piggiedearz 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2008 Your canopy really looks great with those tiles! Very sad cos my kitchen cabinet really falls short of my expectations. Sob... What u can add as decor above the tiles are some country signages eg Home sweet home, country kitchen etc. I've seen samples of very nice ones at http://www.forestwood.com.sg/. Go to the "kitchen" section under portfolio. Hi warsurfer Hmm...Just wondering how the canopy could serve as a storage space? U mean it's not boxed up at all? Mine's a permanent feature, really a wastage of storage space. No choice I guess, gotta forgo storage space for asthetic reasons. i juz went to see their site. they revamped it. veri nice now! ya the signages are nice but duno where to get them. must go see see ard soon. i tink u shd ask ur ID to redo the canopy to ur expectations. u hv shown them the design etc, if they cant do it, shd hv told u in the 1st place, not do liao then now say cannot do it as per ur drawing. so now u hv to accept even if u don like it, i do understand the feeling cos my expectations veri high too. warsurfer's canopy looks similar to urs n his is veri nice, maybe u can try to deco it if u really accept wad ur ID has given u. BunBun 5 Report post Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) For stencils, I've never done that before but I know that you need a stencil template , stencil paints to make a stencil. To make a stencil template, you just draw out the design you have in mind and cut out the design leaving parts behind. With this, you can use the outline of the cutout shape on paper. But if you 're not sure, you can go to art stationery shop to check out stencil templates available. Those stencil templatates & stencil paints have basic instructions manual on how to do the stencils. One such shop is Art Trends I think, its located one or two floors above kinokiuya at Ngee Ann City. One more art stationery shop is at Bras Besah Shopping, on the top floor? I can't remember the exact location but it is definitely at Bras Besah. Many art students go there. how to do stencils ar? can teach me? stencils will be gd as they wont fade (with lacquer) n easy to clean. for wreaths i only hv an xmas one hahaha. meant for living room Edited August 3, 2008 by BunBun

Wow, I'm impressed! Very clever of your ID to suggest the concealed storage space! Really can't tell at all if you don't even mention it. Unfortunately it's too late for me to do anything now, cos it means having to dismantle everything and doing everything from scratch. Gotta make do with what I have I guess. Perhaps when I have more budget end of the year, I will ask someone else to just design a canopy for me. IMO, having more storage space is always better than limited storage. As this is our new home, it seems that we do not have much junk. Wait till 10 years later, then we probably have headache thinking abt where to store our barang barang! i juz went to see their site. they revamped it. veri nice now! ya the signages are nice but duno where to get them. must go see see ard soon. i tink u shd ask ur ID to redo the canopy to ur expectations. u hv shown them the design etc, if they cant do it, shd hv told u in the 1st place, not do liao then now say cannot do it as per ur drawing. so now u hv to accept even if u don like it, i do understand the feeling cos my expectations veri high too. warsurfer's canopy looks similar to urs n his is veri nice, maybe u can try to deco it if u really accept wad ur ID has given u. Those signages are not difficult to find. Can go to Cottage Crafts, Forest Wood or other shops selling country-style stuff. They have rectified the problem for me already, not the best solution around but at least it looks better than before. I will take photos and maybe post them up next week. My last bet now is to decorate it with tiles and some signages. For stencils, I've never done that before but I know that you need a stencil template , stencil paints to make a stencil. To make a stencil template, you just draw out the design you have in mind and cut out the design leaving parts behind. With this, you can use the outline of the cutout shape on paper. Besides the places that BunBun has suggested above, you can also try Spotlight...I've seen stencils being sold there. If you are game for some creativity, buy stencil plastic and design your own. Time consuming but at least, you get what u really want. I have lots of stencil designs at home which I use for my quilting. Think can probably use for the wall too. I can take pics of what I have and PM u if u r interested.
countrylover 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 My carpentry is 90% done. The carpenter came to fix the timber partition and rectify some problems for my kitchen cabinet and MBR wardrobe last Saturday. Really glad that the partition is finally installed, makes my living room look warmer and cosier now. They managed to rectify the problem with my canopy hood. It's not perfect but at least it looks more decent now. Now left to us to work magic with decorative tiles to beautify it. The faulty door for my MBR wardrobe has also been replaced. But atlas, after they left, I realised that the door handles for the left door were installed on the wrong side! Really wonder why they could do silly blunders like this. They've also boxed up the area above my main door to hide those ugly gas pipes, and installed cornices for the household shelter feature wall, shoe cabinet and partition. Still left a small portion for the shoe cabinet as they didn't bring enough cornices last Saturday and touching up of the painting for the cornices which they promised will be done by Wednesday. The contractor for the solid top will be coming to install it today. Can't wait to see how the completed cabinet looks like! We are arranging to do plumbing works over the next 2 days and Citigas to turn on gas supply on Thursday. Hopefully by this weekend, everything will be functional! Banzai18 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 This is my canopy with the tiles. the colour of the cabinet is too dark due to lighting so cant catch the trimmings. free then take more pics of the hse to show u. planning to add some deco on the white portion but no idea yet. will do some research then see wad to put. u hv any pics of canopies like that? Hi Piggiedearz, Your tiles on the canopy are very nice. I placed some tiles on my canopy too. For the empty space, I placed a pic i bought at IFC. Planning to hang other things around the picture as still look so plain. piggiedearz: My wife started a photo blog of our home for our close friends and relatives. I have been trying to find them but could not find any suitable ones. Thanks a million. Cheers, Hey Banzai Love your canopy too, simple and nice! But I think the white part for yours is made of plaster right? Cos can tell that the texture is very different from wood. I think just having the photo frame is good enough. Putting in too many elements make it look cluttered, hence taking people's attention away from the beautiful canopy. Think our intention is to bring people to admire the canopy, rather than the decor items used to accent it. Just my 1 cents worth.

countrylover 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 (edited) We had the solid tabletop for our kitchen cabinet installed yesterday. Glass hob from Tecnogas Solid surface sink We decided to custom make a solid surface sink that is matching to our tabletop, as it looks nicer than a stainless steel one. Costs more but it gives a sleek finish to our cabinet. Edited August 5, 2008 by countrylover
countrylover 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 However, to my shock, the contractor accidentally scratched three of my doors!! He insisted that it's not possible that his workers could have done it but the fact is, we had inspected everything after the carpenter left last Saturday and the scratches weren't there. Have informed my carpenter and he promised to resolve the issue with his contractor. Seems like our cabinet is giving us problems again and again. This is quite a big headache as solid doors will need to be replaced once scratched, there's no way you can touch-up the defects. It's unlike laminated wood whereby u could just replace the laminates. That will probably take another 1 to 2 weeks to reproduce. And they don't come cheap, according to my carpenter, the doors cost about $200 each.
