False Ceilings Vs Lamps; Yellow Lights Vs White Light

Recommended Posts

Hi peeps,

am gonna get my keys soon and can't seem to make up my mind on the above 2 things.

Care for some comment?

I was thinking to use more lamps instead of false ceilings but afraid it won't be cosy or bright enough. Cause when i move next time, can bring the lamps over heehee safe money.

I would prefer yellow light as it is more cosy but my better half say too dark prefer white light.

What do u all think? !!

It depends on the size of the area you are intending to use lamps. If the space is small, you can probably make do with floor lamps, table lamps or even a wall recessed light, like a "warm white" fluorescent tube. But this will make this space very child unfriendly if you have or will have small children. Children will pull at electrical cords, touch the bulbs etc.

As for colour of light bulbs, there is white, cool white and warm white. Cool white is equivalent to daylight. Warm white is what gives you the yellowish hue.

I personally like warm white but my DH thinks it's bad for our eyesight. And my main contractor did mention that warm white gives him a headache, because he has to strain his eyes to compensate for the lack of brightness in a room that use warm white.

So what I am doing is cool white inside the house, and warm white outside the house for that mood lighting.

In my current house, we have 2 banks of lights. Halogen lights + cool white downlights. When we had home parties, we would use the halogen lights. But halogen lights emit alot of heat, so we always had to set our living room aircon on high fan and 22 deg C!

You're right. about saving money, as long as you don't have expensive tastes in lamps.

As far as brightness is concerned, it's a function of the power of the light bulbs. You just add power and bulbs till it's bright enough. It's not a problem.

"Cosy" is an often mis-used word in Singapore. Brightness and cosy don't go together. If you want it to be bright like NTUC supermarket, it won't be cosy like sitting next to the light from a fire place.

In other words, choose one or the other.

Yellow light is actually good if you have enough power. The problem is that old-timers can only think of white fluorescent lamps because they grew up with them. If you watch any American movies, notice how they light up their houses. They don't use fluorescent lamps. Instead, they have lots of table lamps, floor lamps, wall mounted lamps, etc.

You should read a lighting book to understand how to use lamps to create accent lighting, mood lighting and task-specific lighting.

Lastly, in addition to warm white and cool white, there is also "soft" white which is less yellow than warm white but warmer than cool white. Unfortunately, I only know of one brand that offers it.

Hi CKoonyin,

I had exactly the same problem. What i intend to do is cornices, much cheaper & wont make the house shorter. I used the budget for crystal lights and chandeliers bec when i move, i can "BAN" out the lights, but i cannot carry away the false ceilings. U can use combinations of wall & ceiling lamps.

As for brightness, I not sure what is your floor area, but i know that for HDB, 2 tornado of 23 watt each is good enough if u on it simultaneously. You should check the lumens. High wattage does not equate more brightness. Warm white is supposed to be brighter than cool white.

I also don't like cool white, look like NTUC, but many people likes it. I prefer warm white. Under daylight or cool white, when i look into mirror, my acne scars, black head, white head whatever heads is accentuated. But under warm white or halogen, my face looks very radiant that i almost fell in love with myself, haha. I realised that the more orangy the light colour, the nicer u look.

limit is more to the adapter of the lamp not wattage.

i see...so i check the adapter of the lamp den get the same power bulb ya?

but this is where i get confused, cause for energy saving, they say for e.g. 8w become 20w

so should i base on the 8w or the 20w?

Philips.

As for books, go to the library and browse. Virtually all reno books have a lighting section. There are also specific books focusing on lighting alone, which in itself is an art.

what they mean is -

a light bulb that has the BRIGHTNESS of a 20w(incandescant) while consuming only 8w of electricity.

trust me, you might find a 12w tornado bulb TOO BRIGHT.

there isnt any 60w energy saving bulbs - max is around 21-27watts.
