Actually beside the cost factors you also must look into the materials and workmanship they are giving.

On top of that ur correspondance with ur ID is also important, whether u find them comfortable to work with and the trust and responsibility on him. No point working with the ID u don like or those who like to give all kind of excuses as u will be facing him at least few weeks. :)

And lastly the after sales services they can offer are definitely most impt, cos reno sure will have some hiccups so be prepare to call them back anytime w/o any make up excuses. !!

Lastly I find that all the company got their own style of design so it jus fall into which company's design u love the most really depend on individual. :dunno:

It all boils down to the designer themselves on how creative they can utilise a particular space rather than the company. I've been to super brand company but the designer who served us showed us drawings that has nothing much to brag about....design-wise, it depends alot on the individual's creativity. The company only provides the designers with the type and brand of materials for them to work with.

It's more useful to shortlist the specific designer rather company. I agree that workmanship is an impt aspect of your reno other than the design.

Agree with bro Cantona7 & Air.

Different designers in the same company can come out very differently in design. So you need to find the best designer in the company if choosing that company. Most important is if the designer is very creative & at the same time practical. No point designing something that looks fantastic and when implementing it cannot be done due to other factors like (eg beam obstructing, etc...).

Workmanship, material used, getting along with ID, flexibility, responsive, honesty & after service is other crucial points that must taken into consideration in deciding the right ID for your place.

Just based on my experiences !!

To me... I don't go for design... I go for practical... design always cost more $$ and more things need to maintain... I mean more area need to be clean... I am a lazy person... only do minimum...

I also dont go for design, for me, if everyday see the same design on your home, will feel bored!

Then how? Cannot hack down, cannot shift position...all cost money.

So, how? Better keep it to the minimum as what HSH21 said.

Buy movable furniture and create your own design.

At least can change now and then.

Sorry, no offend for those who go for designs.

Nice design house, customised furnitures & space planning place does really make your place nice to stay (i would not call it "bored!") and you are usually stay a long long time. Off course there is cost associated and for those on the budget not adviceable as nice design you must have a nice furnitures to go with it.

True that off the shelf items can be change easily and cost less. Best is to stay within your budget and try not to over stretch your realistic budget.

No offence to those on a budget.

That's depend.... this is my 4th house after marriage... I quite regreted to do so much built in (design) to my 3rd house... waste my $$$... and don't think the design has add value to my sale... because what I like might not suit others taste...

My interpretation is different thou.

In my opinion, good design is how your designer help you utilise the space effectively.

A well spaced house is a pleasure to live if it helps settle storage issues and at the same time, enhance the look of the house in a subtle and elegant manner.

I dont think renovation will necessarily bring up the resale value of a house, but a well designed place certainly bring more smiles to the end user.

after two months of searching for the "ideal" or "best" ID, ironically I found that the best designer is non other myself! :) not saying that now my house is top noch design but it has all attributes I wanted to have, and i believe that I do not need a stranger to plan how I should use the space.

i feel IDs are for those with big budget and really have no time to do it. flip thru Home & Decor, there are many self-designed houses.

maybe u want to just try it yrself?

just my 2cents.

Agree. With built-ins, you can utilise wasted spaces like corners or recessed areas and turn them into something more useful like extra storage or display space. I don't encourage too much built-ins though. Like what HSH21 said, when you decide to shift house later on, you can't bring the built-ins with you. Only do built-ins unless absolutely necessary like hiding odd corners or creating extra storage or minimising space that can't be achieved with off-the-shelf furniture.
