Av Cables To Get

Recommended Posts

Hi Wensi,

1) Your DVD recorder must have a HDMI port ...pic here HDMI

2) When you said "true HD" you mean Full HD?...which is 1920 x 1080 resolution. If you can't see much difference between Full HD & HD ready then save the $$$. If your viewing distance is quite far or your TV size is a bit small then you not maximising the full HD TV. Also if you are not really into HD (looks like you may not as you are not into movies which current HD-DVD or Blu-ray does bring out the best pictures) then stick to HD ready TV and don't spent so much on a full HD ready TV likes Pioneer PY700 (50" cost around $5.8K). Where as the HD ready plasma of same size PV700 cost around $4K.

If you are thinking of 46" LCD (really recommended as compared to 42" unless your room is quite small) then can consider Sony or Samsung brand. HD ready TV will eventually obsolete but i don't think it will be so soon..by then you can always upgrade to a better & new models and definitely cheaper then current today's full HD price.

3) Not sure which brand is the HD box free you getting but i believe you still need to subscribe to Starhub HD program (think around $18 for the only 2 channel that is currently available only) to received the HD channel.

4) For my case i have HDMI cables for a) HD TV channel... b) DVD player.... c) PS3 ... d) Amplifier

Hi,

I'm a 'cables' idiot too.. :)

I have a Bose music system (not home theatre but sound output is link to TV/DVD), DVD recorder, starhub cable box & X-box.

Questions:

1. How would I know if my DVD recorder can use a HDMI cable?? Think mine is not HD DVD..

2. Thinking of buying a TV now, do I hv to go for the true HD or HD ready is good enough? Prices can be of $2k difference.. I don't watch movie at home, so not really into 'quality'.. But afraid that will HD Ready TV be obsolute soon?? (for ref, need a minimum 42'' tv, thinking of 46'')

3. If I buy a HD Ready TV, and they're giving a HD box free, then will my TV becomes a True HD TV and able to receive HD program?

4. Base on my above-listed equipments, how many HDMI point/cables i need?? - must take note when i shop for new TV...

Pardon for some dumb dumb questions.. hope to hear replies.. tks in advance!

Current market most of the new model Plasma or LCD come with at least 2 to 3 HDMI input.

Looking at ur case x-box (don have HDMI), Starhub HD Digital Box (Yes, If u are getting it free) and DVD recorder (Yes, most plyer have) so total 3 HDMI cables u require. ;)

But u have to check ur Bose Music system whether they do have HDMI input and output if not maybe u can consider to change other HTS (but not Bose sys pls, don get offend.) :)

hi lifestyle/cantona7,

thanks for the replies..

ya, i've a large hall, tv to sofa dsitance is abt 3.5 - 4m, therefore needed a big tv.. if not can't see their 'pimples' clearly.. kekekeke..

thinking of Sony's 46'' (KLV-46V300A, HD Ready, $4999 with freebies), but the price is still steep compared to other brands (similar specs).. Any comment on Sharp Aquos (dun hv model no.)?

My Bose music system is quite old already, think more than 4 yrs liao, so i think may not hv HDMI input. As i'm not into quality movies therefore it's ok without HDMI.. as long can hook up to TV/DVD can liao.. :dunno:
