When To Sign On The Dotted Line?

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

I've gone to a few IDs already, and after comparing quotes, researching about them online, and speaking to a few selected 'candidates' several times, I plan to sign on the dotted line soon.

However, the initial design (the perspective drawings the ID provided at the 2nd meeting), while good, is slightly different from the concept i had in mind - e.g. design of feature wall/ foyer area. I've asked the ID to requote based on additions/modifications, but I have not requested him to redraw the perspective drawings.

Can I ask if it is routine that the client gets the ID to resketch the concept until it is the way he likes it before signing on the line, or is that too much to ask from them? I am asking as I am concerned that the ID will need to make price revisions (to take into account different materials used) if I change the designs after signing the contract.

Appreciate your inputs!

it actually depends... as for me i trust my id so i sign him after i got my 1st quote n drawings. as for the drawings there are still some amendments to be made but i leave it to him. of course it is better to hv it black n white, stating down all ur requirements but in the end it still depend on individuals. maybe u need to talk to ur id about any amendments n wat r ur requirements n see what he say..like are there any extra costs...

i didn't ask my id to redo the drawings as i believe he will do it for better design even after i sign. but u shld at least know what material he's using. as for my case, my feature wall is using glass so it surely costs more. if ur id is quoting u for laminated then u ask for glass then u will hv to incur the cost.

so it will b better to know what kind of material he is using.

hope it helps.

Hi purpledino,

If you really like the design you had in mind then ask the ID to show you the perspective drawing (i think most ID will draw a few for you to see) before you sign the dotted line.

Also check how many design drawings that you can change (major) after the contract is signed without incur any additional cost. Mine you any design changes may have impact on your schedule work. So once confirmed the design and check to make sure that it is feasible (from my ID hunting, some design are great but not practical or lots of doubt...e.g existing beam placement which only can be detect upon site inspections or when the walls are knock down)

Usually, ID or yourself will improve on the original concept drawing in your initial design stage.
