    The pricing should be around there as the board used in bathroom is different as it should be waterproofing

    No crack and also the existing wall tiles is not hallow inside or else in future your new overlay tiles will crack too.

    You can do overlay to the toilet tiles as it don't require hacking thus saving you a sum of money.

    I think there is nothing wrong with it, your ID should at least paint the plywood white instead of leaving it this way.
