  1. The Look: Floor: parquet, herringbone pattern Furniture: medium brown wood (or wood look...) Lights: pendants & uplights Walls: blue (living), green (study), brown (MBR)
  2. Yes, ours was 2k also. But at least you get the door and your shoes covered at the same time! My friends got 2 separate items and it cost them about 1k more I think. I heard of them a bit late, so confirmed with another ID. Yes, I know our units are the same. Easy to compare!
  3. h4happy,Download free from Google website. To me it's quite intuitive to use - started drawing within half an hour. The help window is quite... helpful But it may depend on whether you can visualise 3D in 2D, if you know what I mean. ------ carelinwen, Haha... What do you consider reasonable? I saw a nice small bedside table I liked at Salvation Army, selling for $180. Quite plain, only some simple brass-inlaid lines. Not expensive in a sense, but when you consider what an Ikea side-table costs, it ain't cheap! In the end, didn't get it (though I may go there another day!) Yes, for our kind of style, loose furniture fits better doesn't it? All the same, I'm doing the BS wall because the BS door is kinda ugly just there when you step in the front door (which is quite nice in comparison). Another idea for you: my BS wall extends to the kitchen wall, and that part next to the kitchen is our shoe cabinet, rather than just being a wall covering. Is that what you had in mind? I'm not sure there's much space behind the main door.
  4. seems to be the water pipes running through the bathroom, plus all the bathrooms above & below! i don't know if it's normal, or a problem, or just that it's like that when new. any ideas from others? Yes, typically when a block is new, ppl not moved in fully yet, ppl don't know each other... that's when theft can be more common. So it's good if we can all be more "kaypoh" about people we see around. Even thought the police are just next door, they won't patrol more often just cos of that.
  5. If you're still looking, how about trying Unimax from across the road? 2 of my friends (tho not TPY) have gone for them.
  6. Hi carelinwen, Happy to know that you find my idea for the wardrobe door height useful for yourself. I'm not sure whether I'll end up using it myself as I'm no longer doing the bed as built-in *sigh* Wow, you have an interesting mix in mind: colonial/scandivanian/peranakan! Which elements are you going to combine? I'm Peranakan myself, but I find the traditional Peranakan furniture rather too "fussy" or ornate. Will be fascinating to see how it works out for you!
  7. I don't know about cloudy water. But when I flush the toilet, sometimes it sounds like the whole building's pipes are complaining... Very loud "singing" or "screeching".
  8. For your "viewing pleasure"... This is what I hoped to do for my MBR: In the end the built-in bed was quoted at $2k - so I cut it out... This is what I plan to do for my study: In the end the study tables were quoted at $800 each so I cut it out as well... Did these mock-ups on Google Sketchup, a cool 3D modelling prog.
  9. Thanks for the wishes and the "vote" of confidence!
  10. Thanks for dropping by and sorry there's not much stuff here. Most IDs are familiar with the current minimalist vogue and don't seem to "get it" regarding shabby-chic or whatever. Actually I think you've made a good decision - I think I also didn't need an ID, just contractors would do. But work is busy, I've no time to manage my reno myself, so I got an ID anyway. So far we are planning to do "the look" by adding accessories and decorations in our style, since the cabinets and other built-ins will be quite "normal". So far "the look" is: Entry foyer: terracotta tiles Living room parquet: herringbone pattern Living room lamp: Middle-Eastern glass-and-brass "lantern" We are still looking for other interesting pendant lamps for the kitchen, bedrooms and passageways...
  11. "unfortunately", we could not make it that low... we've selected our ID (though i admit - see below - we don't really need one) and the stuff we are getting total 30k. i guess it's not very expensive nor is it very cheap. but i've no time to keep looking (much less update this t-blog often!)
  12. I've been very busy with work and other things. Currently we have met a couple of ID and I think we are working to a budget of around $25k for built-ins, walls and floors.
  13. Well, I guess cheap & expensive are relative. To me, Ikea Jokkmokk $39 = cheap Ikea Ingolf $95 = expensive Furniture Mall teak/mahogany chair I saw just now $290 = ? Now $95 seems quite reasonable, in a way I may get 4 Jokkmokk and 2 Ingolf with armrests $115 each. The Ingolf with armrests looks nice enough to double as sitting area armchairs. My wife likes the idea of a long bench. But the price of those we saw at Furniture Mall was $200+! *faint*
  14. Ya, expensive frankly. But they're solid pine after all... We may get a table and maybe a hutch, also the Jokkmokk chairs. I prefer the Ingolf chairs but they're more than twice the price!
  15. Thanks. I've been thinking of getting either a buffet or a buffet hutch from Ikea (Leksvik series), having seen them in the catalogue. I didn't know the tall one is called a hutch.
  16. Yes thanks, I've already 'reported' there. So many pages, I've dipped in here and there for tips but there's tons more left. Thanks. Will have to look up 'buffet hutch'. And yes, cottage is quite like it without suggesting 'farm'. For me, it's not really about having something new. I don't mind visiting a friend's zen/minimalist home for a few hours, but I wouldn't be able to live there, to feel it's home. Somehow that look doesn't have a link to my history/identity.
  17. Thanks Phantom. Don't wanna overdo the 'ethnic'. I'm not Middle-Eastern anyway, though I am a fan of Moghul architecture. May not include any Moghul/Persian elements in the end. Mrs_Png, mine is Unit 17. I plan to put the TV in the study, facing the sofa bed (see floor plan above). I want to make full use of the living room window light for a nice sitting area. I think, for this new block, one big issue is light. The living room and master bedroom are the best lit, followed by the other bedrooms. The kitchen and corridor are dim, and both bathrooms are simply dark. I'm finding it hard to accept that no matter the time of day, I will have to turn on the lights every time I go into the bathroom.
  18. Don't know about the others, but I only collected my keys last week. So if it's a problem that takes time to show, I wouldn't know. So far only spotted 3 tiles with thin hairline cracks next to the bathroom window (by the way the window is so small and the bathroom is so dark!)
  19. Actually, it isn't spacious. My reaction on opening the main door for the first time was, ah! so small! If you look at the living room layout, you'll notice there's hardly any walking space. I drew the dining table in its 'full' position. When there are no guests, the table flap will fold down and the table will be rotated and laid against the wall, to allow better movement. I think the style won't be so varied lah. Think I'll settle for a basically English style with a generally 'Old World' feel. No Moroccan shisha den here! It's fine, no offence taken. I don't plan to do things that require heavy maintenance. I will, for example, get cupboards built to the ceiling so that I won't have to clean the tops. And I will have doors for the bookshelves so I won't have to dust my hundreds of books. But I do intend to hang LOTS of photos on some walls like the magazine clippings shown, and also indulge in texture and colour.
  20. More visual inspiration. First, the more English type: Next, the more Moroccan type:
  21. Redwyrm, yes I drew it myself. Actually it's not complete yet, beds not put in. I've been trying to visualise what I want before going to any ID. Especially the study and kitchen.
  22. Yes there's an element of country, but not fully. I'm not trying to evoke feelings of cows and meadows ;-)
  23. Here's my ideas so far, for furnishing. I haven't gotten any input from any ID yet. And here's some visual inspiration for my design: If you see nothing, the pics are still on the way. Check back tomorrow...
  24. Ya lor, I can see some in D and E have already moved in. Can see laundry hanging from the front facing Central.
  25. Hi everyone! It's my 1st day on Renotalk and I'm getting right into the culture by starting my own RtB. I just collected the keys to my new 4-rm 90sqm HDB. My goal is to have a shabby-chic meets colonial meets eclectic meets English design. I can't find a good name for my style. I also haven't found an ID yet. Quite unprepared compared to many here. But hope there are some out there who somehow share my unconventional taste and others who at least can find something different to look at Photos coming up, after I sort out the technical details...
