Where To Buy Woods, Timber, Planks, Plywoods, Laminated Sheets
lorddraco replied to KayLan's topic in DIY Corner
Just finish one of my project using ply and formica high-pressure laminate. Not easy working with laminate and my first time. Definitely requires a lot more time working on it, cutting straight without cracks and edge trimming is most challenging. Now appreciate my previous contractor more Now working on my 2nd project (larger scale) with laminate also. Got a hang of handling laminate, more satisfied with my work versus first one. I check with Ban Heng leong. I think for a small sum, they also help basic assembly into box or etc. Not complex assembly tot. Another note in working with ply and timber merchant is using inch/foot instead of metric measurement will get you more accurate cuts. Previously wood working with metric get me very inaccurate cuts. Initially tot of going to Jurong East Hiap Heng for timber ... check they side, they really have loads of variety but they using a non-bench type saw so I am afraid that the longer piece of ply or timber will not be as straight as I wanted and lenght/width may not be as accurate. Any one have good experience in their cutting? -
any specific hardware shop to order? I do know it is not easy to do such laminates.

Hi .. where to get Seng Lee or Lam Chuan laminate? Thinking of getting thinner or soft laminate in near future. Thick is hard to manage.
-
Yeah .. Ikea sold unstained pine. plywood is not easy to handle. Using Laminate with ply is also not easy...
-
mmm .. I think that is the reason why I see my contractor threw away laminates board when my house is under renvoation.

went there ... since they only have hardwood and real solid wood. the width is limited. If need anything beyond 10", will need to glue together. Initially place my required dimension there, but they also very busy and forgotten about my order (over 12 to 16 pieces) thus I switch working on plywood. I got my ply from Ban Heng Long Trading at Syed Alwi Road... nice chap there to help your requirement. Place order today, I got it tomorrow. They also now sell Laminates and ply with white backing... Laminates need to order before hand. I got my laminates from formica - Sales Office at Sim Avenue but ware house at 2B Sungei Kadut Drive. Place order at Sim Avenue and get your stuff at their warehouse immediate. I went over to their sale office to look at the colors of the laminates. very wide range to choose from. -
pine classified under soft wood and it is cheap cause it is renewable source (pine wood grow faster than normal other wood type) For solid hard wood will be ash, oak and etc.. Otherwise, will be plywood. For pine.. definitely need to use lacquer or stain to prevent termites.

re-laminate not easy as far as I know.. to remove the original laminate and paste with new one. Think gonna to use hot gun to remove it... I yet to find one to re-do laminate. I do know where to get laminate. I just got it from Formica 4" x 8" for around SGD 50.

note that if you are apply to existing... you need to re-surface it using sandpaper before applying stain again. then lastly the lacquer or varnishing for protection.
-
not possible. the lacquer will not stay. laminate is engineered sheets and paint or whatever will look very ugly over it. re-laminiate is impossible but need to take out and redo which is possible.

Thanks ... anyway .. got myself the Hitachi liao ... Initially still thinking of getting the cheaper Pana or Toshiba but latter choose hitachi reason is Over Pana - Hitachi using Direct Drive which is quieter ... My old Toshiba is a real noisy machine. Even in master bedroom can hear it spinning. Like the Pana Aquawash thingy and the Ag .. but I donno if that is really good. Over Toshiba .. well .. previous is also Toshiba and the current batch of DD aint too impressive for me. So time to change brand to try... the sale in Gain City recommends me the LG model ... say pretty good Korean parts and assemble in Thailand and blah blah .. But after I see some really negative comment in regards to Appliance from LGE. . I think I will missed that. Think fridge still ok cos my parent using it since 2001...

Hi .. just wanna to get further feedback of Hitachi BW-105JV. Well ... Interesting to know strong supporter of European brands like Miele. Been a user of Jap brands for Years ... mom use to have a Hitachi that used like more than 5 to 6 years until we moved house.. it breaks down after a year. Than now a Toshiba Direct Drive Model (Made in Japan). I do own a Toshiba that cost me 425... breaks down due to electronic after 4 years... but at type of price... and the location it made.. I think I cannot complain much. Now looking at Top-load again but prefer those with Direct-Drive .. which Only Toshiba and Hitachi has it. I have a look at Miele . Great brand .. but always found that they are overly priced. Yes Yes .. they can worked for 20 years but ... 3000... I could possible buy at least 3 units of Jap/Korean brand... And with such current crisis ... sometime even it can work for so many years .. the company could have closed down by then or brought over by other coy. Just a another school of tot ... Initially wanna to get front-load but found majority has small pot-hole except the expensive Hitachi with 600mm pot hole. Else how to squeeze my curtain into the washer to wash?
