Actually not require to build the base. If u got the time to coordinate diff contractors is ok but the overall cost may not neccessary be cheaper coz they dont earn much for small item. The tile price are not much diff unless u take those >$10psf ones ( granite or marble). Granite & marble are natural stone, model may be same but pattern can vary a lot. ID get tiles from main distribuer and usally can get better pricing than u buy yourself.
