  1. it may be difficult to achieve a balance with black (glass) backsplash with black (lower) cabinets, red island kitchenette, and white (top) cabinets (your id could/should advise you). if you really want black glass, you'll have to use very lightly tinted black glass. if you keep the the majority of the warmer (and 'heavier') colours to the bottom half (black, red) and the majority of the cooler (and 'lighter') colours (white, clear frosted glass, stainless steel) to the top, the overall effect should be ok. i would try to use stainless steel backsplash in your kitchen, doesn't feel as heavy as black glass.
  2. $990? did you miss out a digit? otherwise, nope, it's not the real mccoy. the real ph artichoke (made by louis poulsen) is available at space furniture (ask to order if not available and you are really desperate to have it). the lamp is priced at an 'affordable' $10,000 (+- a couple of hundreds). as per ne0mesis suggestion, if you want a similar replica, go to lightings.com.sg at jalan besar.
  3. the number of colours isn't the issue, it's how much we understand the colours. colours need to talk to one another in a meaningful manner. my suggestions if you are insistent on a red kitchen island would be to go for: 1. a white table top 2. a stainless steel or glass (not black) backsplash 3. white or silver/stainless steel lampshades
  4. he's actually quite "famous" in the sengkang and punggol forum. his hinges are not required at all. if in doubt, just locked up the gate and asked him to show you how to remove the gate (he can't). btw, if you allowed him to "demo", your gate will be damaged and useless after that. if your's a new flat, the bsc will not replace it for you.

focus s is the one made in china, but... not all items in the series. only the basin mixers, bath/shower mixers are made in china. the kitchen mixer is still made in germany. having said that, don't worry about made in china or made in germany, the quality is still undeniably hansgrohe.

have you gotten the hansgrohe stuff yet? if not, let me know. i can get at much lower prices (even lower than their so-called sale prices). only problem is waiting time (which i'm not sure if you can afford to wait a week or 2).
  7. should be easy to find in jalan besar or the hardware stores. just make sure the brackets that you put the shelves on is able to take the weight.
  8. initially, i had thought of using this daybed as my sofa as well. but later, realised it didn't fit in with the way i envisage my place. glad you use it, with a slightly higher/harder mattress (to counter the bar in front), it should make a nice sofa. for coffee table, i don't think the old tires is an ideal solution. tires are 'soft' and they wobble, hence, unstable. i can suggest the following if you want something unique: just need to find some sort of drum to do the job.
  9. btw, i love your birdcage lamp. very professionally done however, if you want an 'industrial' theme, you can consider these type of industrial lamp also. set of 3's in red would be nice to give some warmth and colour.
  10. one way of looking at it is: human is fickle-minded. the other way of looking at it is: trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. take for eg. in person, we may not like modernism or minimalism that much (nor even understand what those terms mean). however, as those designs seem to be in vogue, we build our modern or minimal home. subsequently, when we start to live in physically, we start to purchase lots of lace stuff, antique furniture, etc, because that's what we like (in person). what happens next? the modern or minimal home no longer look modern or minimal. hence, i believe it's better (and easier) to design a home around the owners than the owners around the home. my mood board for 'industrial' theme would probably consist of these items: industrial light trays cable trays (clean up the edges and use them as shelving perhaps) instead of typical drawers and stuff, can consider tool cabinets (minus the wheels and ikea has something similar). if you want the ultimate industrial item, go for metal cabinets for something cutesy, a key drop or letterbox could be nice (need to repurpose it though)
  11. "modern, industrial look" and "whatever i can afford" look is not mutually exclusive. it may mean a little bit of extra legwork though.
  12. err... no. to cut things thin, you need 'kang hu'.
  13. the difference is in the material used and technique in making them. the expensive blades (eg. zwilling and wusthof) uses high carbon steel. advantages of high carbon steel: they are hard enough to hold the edge, yet flexible and soft enough to hone and sharpen. in simpler terms, they require sharpening less frequently (probably once a year) because they are not easily blunt. nevetheless, you'll only need to hone it (depending on usage) once a day or on alternate days. with regard to construction technique, most of the expensive blades (especially german ones) are forged, not stamped. forged knives are heavier and traditionally, better (in terms of hardness) than stamped knives. however, with the advent of technology, there are some exceptions to the stamped/forged argument: the expensive japanese knives (like shun and global) uses very high carbon steel and are stamped, not forged - advantages: harder, thinner/finer blades, hold their edge much longer and generally, lighter. the cheaper blades (eg. those you get from provision shops) uses stainless steel. their quality will largely depend on the quality of the stainless steel used (caution: cheap and good seldom come together, especially where metal is concern). they are most definitely stamped, and not forged - hence, their thin and flat appearance. these blades are more mallable (softer), easily blunt and will require sharpening often.
  14. the steel rod is meant to hone the knife whereas a sharpening stone is meant to sharpen the knife. google it to know their differences. in most circumstances, you only need to sharpen the knife once a year whereas you'll need to hone the knife regularly. if you don't know how to use the rod, you can do a search online. there are a number of videos that teach you how to use it. for sharpening, i will use either the lansky sharpening system (troublesome to use sometime) or the zwilling 'thing' (just pull through twice or thrice). personally, i find it hard to get the correct edge using a sharpening block i think the 'dot' thing is peculiar only to scanpan. i don't think it's an iso thingy personally, i have not used scanpan knives before, so i can't comment. however, for the very best knives, you can't go wrong with the german brands like henckels or wusthof. otherwise, i'll pick the japanese brands like global or shun. fyi, i've also bought and is using the one-man henckels international.
  15. i used to collect knives - mainly the hunting, general purpose sort. don't worry too much about the scratches (unless you are collecting them for showcases). all metallic blades (cheap, expensive or otherwise) will get scratches if you use it often, you can't really prevent it. the display sets in the departmental stores usually look 'jialat' because they are manhandled several times a day. having said that, it's beneficial to learn how to hone a knife properly to maintain the knife's edge and reduce accidentally damaging the knife.
  16. slight correction: the zwilling (which means twin, hence, two men) brand is made in germany, except twin cermax, which is made in japan. the international brand (aka one man) brand is either made in china or spain. the cologne series is made in spain. both zwilling or the international brand is an upgrade over ordinary knives. however, if the owner doesn't take care, it doesn't really matter if they are good knives or not. all knives will require regular honing in order to keep their edge.
  17. yah, i know. hence, the parentheses. guess, he just have to stare at the 3d diagrams a little longer to figure out what's wrong
  18. Cannot la.. Later she niam for 10 yrs i will die.. My dreams for a dark dark house is going to be broken!! i beg to differ. (usually) even though you can't say what/where went wrong, it means something is amiss - and you just haven't figure it out yet. best option is to post up the 3d (if that's possible).
  19. my apologies. never intend to spread the poison around
  20. slightly under $100. can get it at US$65.30 from pantry pursuits. pick up from their store at: 5 Kim Yam Road (off River Valley Road).
  21. another option if you prefer something less rigid. otherwise, all white. clear/spray backsplash. black glass over the sink cabinet.
  22. what's the effect you are trying to achieve?
  23. choose a red sunflower if you want to draw people's attention to your ceiling and the fan. if you have a feature wall or a feature piece, there will be competition for attention and overall effect will be diluted. i'll rather diy and change it to white or silver or light grey.
  24. hi ne0, thanks for the group buy. although the only item i've ordered from the group buy is the oven, i managed to pick up a fridge, a washing machine and a tv as well. the tv was the only thing i've regretted buying after i stepped out of mega i'll probably change the deposit from this particular tv to another model instead once again, thanks!
