Our First Reno Journey
Stream replied to osiris7777's topic in Reno t-Blog Chat - HDB BTO Interior Design and Renovation
What is the purpose of this conversion? Does it mean I can use Ethernet cable to connect my PC to the point, instead of relying on the wifi connection. Any other equipment need to be installed other than what the ISP provide? I'm technically challenged Also, can PM me your contractor. Tks. -

I think 66cm width is too narrow for shower area. Minimum width to be comfortable while showering should be about 80cm, if you are average sized. -

It's actually a Thai condo showroom, so not in SG. No idea where you to get smaller bathtubs -
Wood x White x Grey

I love your choice of tiles! I think its better not to mix in color into your hexagonal tiles as these will look dated over time. Simple and elegant is timeless! The recommended gaps for laying tiles is 3-5mm otherwise there is risk of tiles popping-up due to temperature changes. These seems to be laid much closer (1-2mm?) but of course looks nicer as it mimics the way real wood planks are laid. Don't you or your contractor have concern on this? Other members who have done similar are welcome to share your experience.- 221 replies

You mean it will affect the water pressure? If it's just about aesthetics, I would do it just to get dry/wet areas. For me I'm sealing up bedroom entrance and swapping wash basin (1 pipe) and shower area (2 pipes). So will have to live with criss-crossing pipes -

If you don't mind running exposed pipes, you can partition your bathroom the way mmoh is doing, but relocate the wash basin to be in front of the WC. Then your shower enclosure will run full width of bathroom, with the kitchen entrance sealed up. -

Don't think you've the wall length to place everything along the aircon wall though. Glass all round is only possible if you're not doing wardrobe and kitchen cabinets along the common wall with the bathroom. As for frosted glass, it doesn't really open the space that much and your guests may not be comfortable using your bathroom as frosted glass still expose a bit One way is doing clear glass window with roller blinds installed for privacy. Really open up the space and can be quite cool. Something like this. -

Not possible to hack toilet walls for 1st 3 years! -
Actually for me, partly because I just don't trust local carpentry skills. I only plan to do wardrobes and kitchen cabinetry. So Blum will also do other types of cabinetry, not just kitchens? I'll go visit Blum one day. As for your Besglas 1.6m wardrobe in the L/R, how is it holding up? Maybe I'll do something like that. Did they also do the box up for you or was that done by your contractor, and how much did it all cost you? I'll also do a comparison with OPSH and Ikea etc. Maybe it's just best to get shelving/posts and then get a contractor to install sliding doors and voila, my wardrobe is up! Thank you for sharing your experience with all of us!

Hi Andotang, 1) Yes, I'm referring to the bomb shelter. 2) After "narrowing" down your bathroom entrance by 30cm, I guess your entrance is only about 70cm wide. That gives me the idea to do the same so I can achieve dry/wet area in my toilet 3) Regarding your kitchen cabinets, what make you decide to go with Blum rather than custom-made by your contractor? (I haven't been to Blum showroom as yet). BTW, you can wall-mount a flip-down ledge/shelve beside your platform bed to serve as table top for your notebook for those moments when you want to work in bed.

Hi Andotang It's been fruitful reading your blog. 1) Can you elaborate on how that raised tile in the middle of the shower is done. I like it too, as there's no pools of soapy water gathering at your feet when you shower. And cost? 2) You custom made your L/R marble table from Indonesia. I would think you can do it locally without having the hassle of shipping it back here? I'm also looking to custom-made a work/dining table with metal legs, not powder-coated and with wooden top, more similar (in terms of the metal legs) to this bench outside the HDB showflat. Wonder if you've any leads for this. 3) Can you post/pm contact for HH rack. Tks.

Hi mmoh, I guess I can only decide one way or another after seeing the actual unit. Thanks! -
I'm leaning towards having 15 x 90 tiles. Will that be difficult to lay properly?

Your reno looks very promising 1) Mind sharing where you got your uber cool armchair and the sofa? 2) About the wall panels, yes, agreed that painting the gaps black will look warmer. What's the pricing like as I will be doing something similar but just one tiny corner of my living room. Disappointed to learn of the 8ft (2.4m) limit of the laminate length. I also prefer the clean look of a false ceiling fitted with downlights but 'm trying to avoid it as HDB ceiling is rather low. Without the false ceiling, there's a 20cm gap at the top. 3) Using large size tiles for the kitchen countertop certainly saves costs. But what about the sides of the tile, which is not finished the same as the top? Good luck with your reno!

About the piping, yes that's a good point. Will have to run a single (?) water pipe to feed the rotated WC. It will be exposed but I'll just have to live with it. After turning the WC, my idea is that it is still aligned with the original sewage hole in the floor. What other hassles I need to consider? Cost is less of an issue for me as long as I end up getting a decent layout with wet/dry areas. Plus I can run my built-in wardrobe on the entire length of that side of the bedroom. Do you have pic of your proposed layout. Maybe I can consider that too -

The layout for the bathroom is similar although the dimensions are different. I understand you're sealing one entrance which is what I plan to do as per my above post. In my case, I need to check with contractor whether it is possible to rotate the WC 90 degrees (and build a half-ledge behind as it's too far from the wall) otherwise the glass panel will reach the front edge of the WC. But after rotating, maybe one side of the WC will be too close to the wall. So I may have to abort the whole idea. (After building literally hundreds of thousands of apartments, you would think HDB already learned how to design a proper bathroom layout. But maybe that's asking TOO MUCH! ) I know our toilet dimensions are different. But I would think you've the same problem too? Or are you doing the L beside the wash basin, in which case do you have enough space to walk between the L-screen and WC to get to the wash basin? Anyway I was at the showflat again at HDB. I noticed there's only 1 drainage hole in the toilet. SERIOUSLY!? Does your unit come with two? -

I'm using the free s/w Sweet Home 3D. You can google and download. It was quite easy enough to figure out how to use on my own, but there are Youtube tutorials available too. After creating the apartment off the HDB floor plan, it was fun trying different layouts for the furniture. I could measure the width of walkways and make sure I'm comfortable moving around. It also provides 3D view which you can rotate and view from different angles. Below is sample of what you can do. Once I have the keys, I can quickly update the dimensions to the actual figures. But there is another free s/w called Sketchup. I think it's more powerful and sophisticated and can produce plans/3D renderings close to what IDs produce; but it's more difficult to learn. I'm just starting to look at the youtube tutorials. However, for space planning purposes, Sweet Home 3D is good enough. -
May I check whether the spray comes out narrow and focused, so it hits bull's eye easily ....lol. If so, I like to get it too. I think your contractor is very resourceful. Pls pm me his contact. Thanks!

The layouts may be similar but the proportions are different. Your kitchen is designed to be almost half a metre longer but narrower than mine. I think it's not much use taking measurements at the HDB gallery because of these differences in designed layout. Anyway how did you do your approximations? I'm using a home design software which is able to use HDB's floor plan as template to create my modeling, but missing the correct wall thickness as HDB already stated that wall thickness in not shown to scale on the FP. -

Another reason is that skirting is done so as to hide the rough edges of the masonry work at the base of the wall. It's hard to plaster that bottom L-corner sharp and smooth against the floor. -

Hi mmoh, thanks for the invite, but I'm not free. BTW, any idea what sort of timeframe is needed for renovating a 2-Rm BTO, assuming no delays and just the usual stuff like tiling, kitchen and wardrobe cabinets etc. ie. nothing fancy lol. -

Anyone with the same exact dimensions on floor plan, as mine below? If you've already gotten keys/moved in, can I trouble you to tell me the actual internal length and width of the bedroom and bathroom. Thanks in advance! -

You can upload your pic this way: 1) Click on "Gallery" tab above (just beside the "Forum" tab). Click the "Add image" button on the top right corner. 2) Upload your pic. If you are doing for first time, you will be prompted to create Album first. 3) In your reply post, choose "Insert other media" option (bottom right), then choose "Insert existing attachment". Then you will see your gallery of uploaded pics. Select the pic you want to insert. You will then see button (at bottom right corner ) highlighting "Insert 1 selected". Click it. Viola, you're done! It's best to resize your pics to smaller size before you upload, as I think there's a size limit for your gallery.
