Went down to the house this afternoon to meet up with our ID so that he can brief us on the work that has been completed and what's to come First thing I noticed when I stepped into the house was that all the rubbish had been cleared out! Our house looks so much more spacious without all that clutter Carpentry has been completed! But a number of minor rectifications need to be done...our ID has marked out the places with masking tape... Our TV console with the correct laminate this time...no more gloss! Minor issue of having to touch up the silicone at the joints between the console and the 3 pillars. Our shoe cabinet with the glass top and grey settee cushion. Weird thing is the carpenters didn't fix the glass top down to the cabinet so the whole piece of glass can slide about! I thought it was too dangerous to leave it so and requested my ID to get the glass fixed down to the cabinet. Kitchen cabinets are fully installed! No issues with this piece of carpentry as of now... Our beloved study table! Had to take a panoramic photo as the table was too long to be captured in a single shot! Only issue is the carpenters used white laminate for the underside of the table! My ID said this is usual practice but I don't like it...so I requested for the underside to have the same wooden laminate as well...when I told my mum this, she thought I was being too picky I just want a nice table which will give me the motivation to study and do my work! No changes to the master bedroom wardrobe and master toilet cabinets...so that concludes all the carpentry we have! Our lights were also delievered this evening! This picture was sent to us by the seller after he had delivered our lights...we thought that was pretty nice of him Can't wait for the lights to be installed so we can go down to the house after sunset!- 99 replies

Thanks for your words of reassurance Luxeplorer! We actually looked at this sink when we went down to the shop to buy our kitchen and bathroom accessories but gave it a miss when we saw that the price was over our budget...guess we lucked out in this instance as the company is willing to absorb the price difference due to our ID's oversight. It's only human to make mistakes but the good thing is that we have a responsible ID and renovation company...- 99 replies

Renovation updates - end of week 3 (continued) My fiance and I spent the whole afternoon yesterday unpacking our Taobao goods. It's been some time since we ordered the items so we had forgotten what was inside some of the boxes...it was a bit like unwrapping presents on Christmas morning We're still missing 2 items which we ordered...hopefully they'll be delivered soon We started by assembling the armchairs we got for our mahjong table... The final product - after a lot of sweat and manual labor! Kudos to my fiance for being so patient and cool-headed when I was feeling frustrated about some parts not fitting properly... At least the arm chairs were completed! We moved on to the assembling the IKEA cabinet next and it was a lot more complicated than we expected We managed to fix the cabinet and were about to assemble the door when we realized we were short of: 1 door hinge! So angry Now, we have to go back to IKEA to get another hinge before we can complete the door...Grrr... My ID says he can handover in 2 weeks time...but looking at how much still needs to be done, I'm doubtful Can't see the end of the light of the tunnel yet...- 99 replies

Renovation updates - end of week 3 It's been so messy at the house the last week...things that have been done/are in progress: 1) False ceiling rectifications completed 2) Electrical works for ceiling done, pending the walls 3) Carpentry being installed 4) Measurements for curtains and blinds taken 5) Painting started Our TV console - love the design which managed to incorporate the 3 existing wooden pillars, but I got a huge shock when I saw how glossy the laminate was! I asked my ID to check if this was indeed the laminate we had chosen and initially, he said it should be correct as the carpenters fabricated the board based on codes. Luckily I insisted he check as the laminate used was wrong! The laminate we had chosen was matte and had hints of grey to complement the other grey features in our house! So, carpenters have to redo... Our shoe cabinet - sans cushion and glass top Kitchen cabinets on both sides are up - initially the drawers installed were not soft closing...our ID said he told us that only the swing doors will be soft closing during the discussion stage but we can't remember...we were resigned to not having soft closing drawers until our ID agreed to change the 5 drawers in the kitchen for us at cost price. Our long study table - it spans the whole length of the study room Super love this! At first, our ID said we will need to install support bars in the center to support the weight of the table due to its length so aesthetics will be compromised a bit...fortunately, our carpenter had the brilliant idea of installing 2 metal rods into the wood and insert them into the walls directly so that the supports won't be visible at all Can't wait for the laminates to be up so that we can see the completed product! Our master bedroom wardrobe - looks like the 3D drawings so no complaints...only issue I had was the door have no handles! There's a groove on each side of the door to allow us to slide the doors open...but to close, we'd need to use friction to push against the door. The carpenter said adding handles will spoil the aesthetic of the wardrobe and so, he asked us to try it first and see if we really want to have the handles added in. Dilemma here...function vs aesthetics Wondering if it's because of all the dust in the house that makes it slippery to slide the doors close...shall KIV on this We had a special request for the wardrobe which was... Ta-daaaa! A pocket mirror! It's still a little stiff so we've asked the carpenter to make it smoother when sliding it out and back in again. More oil please! Our master toilet cabinet and sink - no complaints so far...waiting to take measurements for the quartz top and mirror- 99 replies

I think we have no luck with sinks Last Friday, the kitchen cabinets were installed and after looking at the area where we wanted to place the kitchen sink, my ID realized he forgot that we had already bought a sink which was 910mm in length. So, when he modified the counter to drop the sink area by 2 inches as according to my FSM's suggestions, he forgot to take into account the length of our chosen sink...in the end, he brought our sink back to the shop to find a replacement. As our original sink was Franke, we wanted the same brand with the similar specifications. My main request was the bigger bowl had to be large enough to fit my biggest cooking pot. He whatsapped us a few options when he got to the shop and eventually, we chose another Franke kitchen sink which was 670mm but had a big bowl similar in size to our original sink. A bit of drama ensued when he initially asked us to top up for the new sink which is more expensive than our original one... My fiance was super upset and eventually, the boss stepped in to say that the company was willing to absorb the top up required. Then, all was well again... Original sink on the left and our new sink on the right. Just glad that we managed to get a sink we like...no more trouble with sinks please! On a side note, we brought back the IKEA sink to replace the common toilet sink which was too small for our liking and I must say it looks so much more proportionate now! Plumber will be helping to install the sink this week... Our IKEA sink for the common toilet. Think we got to start praying to the sink god...- 99 replies

Went shopping for a new wash basin for the common toilet last night. Initially, we wanted to get from a shop in IMM but after going down to the house to check on the available space after our common toilet door was installed, we had to scrap that idea. Suddenly thought of sinks from IKEA and managed to find one with dimensions just nice enough to squeeze into the available space we had. So, went down to IKEA for dinner and some shopping! In the end, we bought the whole TYNGEN wash basin, stand and mirror set: We'd have to assemble the cabinet and mirror before our ID can put them up for us. Cross our fingers that out DIY project turns out well- 99 replies

Renovation updates - end of week 2 (continued) So far throughout the week, I was the one going down to the site to check on the progress as it's pretty near to where I work. My fiance and I went down last weekend to take a look at the work done over the past week and discovered a few issues... One major issue that surfaced was the sink installed in our common toilet. So basically, our initial idea was to have a countertop with undermount sink in both toilets. However, this was not feasible in the common toilet due to insufficient space. Our ID proposed wall mounted instead. As I had opted for a veneer swing door instead of the usual bifold or PD door for out toilet, we are limited in the sinks we can choose as the maximum breadth we can go is 400mm in order not to obstruct the swing door. These were the 2 options which our ID whatsapped us. I didn't like the round one so I asked for the square one. And so, our ID proceeded to make the order and this is how it looks like after it was installed: My fiance freaked out...now the basin looks so small and pathetic compared to our mixer tap! We requested our ID to change to a bigger sink but because the plumber had already installed it, the shop which we bought the toilet accessories from refused to take it back We were getting really upset and in the end, our ID offered to give us $150 to purchase a new sink on our own, which we thought was really nice of him We felt really bad though...as this $150 was coming out of his own personal pocket So last night, we made a trip down to IMM to source for a new sink and managed to find this which we think will be able to maximise the limited space we have in our common toilet. Planning to get this in white...costs $69 with delivery fee of $35 which is still within the $150 budget offered by our ID. Will be going down to the house this afternoon to take more detailed measurements and make sure this sink will fit before we order. I guess despite all the hiccups, we're lucky that we have a responsible and responsive ID On a side note, we're glad we took his advice to have the storage heater mounted in the common toilet instead of the kitchen. Happy with that Ceiling works were completed last Saturday...just a couple of minor things to rectify: 1) Need to enlarge the l-box in the living room to ensure uniformed 30cm of perimeter throughout. 2) Need to extend the length of the box in the master bedroom to 80 inches to accommodate the curtain track. Other than these few issues, everything else seems to be on track... Box up for master toilet done! No more ugly pipes! Work to be carried out this week include: 1) Rectification of false ceiling 2) Painting 3) Rerouting of gas pipe 4) Chemical wash 5) Carpentry work One thing that we're pleasantly surprised by is that our ID remembered we wanted to change the design of the bomb shelter ventilation. We thought he wouldn't remember but he did! So props to him Praying that everything else will proceed smoothly...- 99 replies

Renovation update - end of week 2 So...a lot of stuff happened in week 2...initial problems resolved, then more problems cropped up I guess this is part and parcel of the renovation process? Air cons went up last Tuesday. Managed to fix everything in one day so I was pretty stoked about that. Then came the bombshell...we didn't realise the air con pipe which ran into the kitchen were blocking the path of the gas pipe The gas pipes had been pulled off from the kitchen walls as the tiles were being overlaid and so, when the air con pipes was laid, we forgot that the gas pipe ran in the same place...in the end, my ID said we need to get City Gas to come in and reroute the gas pipe and that will cost as $120. A little upset with that but can't really complain as we decided to purchase the air cons from a separate supplier from the usual one our ID gets from, hence the miscommunication. Oh well, we decided to take it in our stride and just pay up first since we will be billed directly by City Gas. Guess the silver lining is that we don't really have to do anything as our ID will arrange with City Gas to make the necessary rectifications. Pipe from the main unit in the living room not visible as installer suggested we run the pipe through the kitchen into the common toilet. Note the copper gas pipe hanging in mid-air...now that the white air con pipe is up, the gas pipe can't be reinstalled back in its original position The air con pipe in the kitchen continues into the common toilet. As I was inspecting the units as thy were being installed, I noticed the corner of the pipe wasn't shaped nicely so, I asked the installer to rectify it. Kudos to the uncle, he immediately went to work on it and it looks so much better now. This is the close up of the upper right corner after rectification. So, air cons are up and my ID has arranged for City Gas to come in this Wednesday to reroute the gas pipe...hope this will be the end of the air con saga!- 99 replies

Shall continue my post on the furniture we bought for the living room next... First up is the sofa! We decided earlier on that we prefer a leather rather than fabric sofa...reason is because of our dog! Even though he's been trained not to jump on the sofa, sometimes when he's home alone, he does naughty things he knows he shouldn't be doing So, having a fabric sofa is out of the question as the last fabric sofa we had got shredded so badly...It was tough looking for the perfect sofa! We went to quite a few furniture shops. As we preferred full leather over half leather, we were prepared to spend at least $2k on it. We searched for almost a month before coming across this sofa at a shop in the Furniture Mall. IT was really comfortable and it got the approval of my fiance's Mum, so we paid for it (his Mum sponsored us the sofa in the end! ) and decided to go with light grey - similar to the display piece in the showroom Besides the sofa, we initially wanted to get an ottoman to fill up the living room space but most of the pieces we saw at the furniture shops were out of our budget. A couple of weeks ago, my fiance saw that Courts was having a clearance sale at Lot 1 and thought these stools would match our sofa quite nicely! We ended up getting 2 of them Tried to convince ourselves that they're about the same colour Guess we'll only know when the sofa gets delivered! Last but not least, we bought a bladeless fan and a trio of paintings from Taobao Initially we wanted to buy a Xiaomi TV but then, as luck would have it, one of my girlfriend's family wanted to give away their old Plasma TV! So we spent a Sunday afternoon lugging the 75kg TV from my friend's house to our place. It was a lot of hard work on the part of my friend's dad, my fiance and his dad So yep, our huge TV is sitting on the floor waiting for the TV console to be constructed That's all for the living room!- 99 replies
