Yup it is against the law to ride on pavements. But it is not ENFORCED as the Govt (i.e. the Police and relevant govt bodies) thinks it is not a major problem yet (i.e. not enough complaints or incidents). To be fair, pedestrains should have the right of way on pavements, cyclists should give way to pedestrains on pavements. But nowadays it's like "ring, ring", and you are expected to give way to cyclists. It's been like this in Toa Payoh (and perhaps in other towns?), where bicycles are everywhere. It will become a major issue when a pedestrain DIES because of inconsiderate cycling behaviour. I guess the best thing to do when kena hit by bicycle on pavement, call the police if injuries are bad. MaCe's suggestion isn't bad either; but it's gonna take a lot of effort for it to be enforced, especially if the town is TPY. Why? Just look at people smoking at eating areas...in fact I got scolded and was challenged to call the police for asking an old man to put his cigarette away (while the food stall owner just stood one side and watched...and he knows him)...and also got shouted at for walking into the way of a PRC cyclist ... inconsiderate people -
Congrats! !! Means you should be getting notification on collection of your keys soon! Can I ask which floor your unit is? >30 storey, <12? or somewhere in the middle? Am trying to figure if they post out the loan documents from highest-lowest or vice versa. Maybe those from Blk C, D and E can clarify on these? Or is it random? No emails from HDB and our Blk B IC as of today....

Aiyo, already have a 7-eleven (near HDB Hub) and Cheers! beside NTUC; perhaps market demand and economics will decide in the end.... not sure if a Sheng Siong would be a good idea...just don't fancy trucks doing loading and loading at the front porch area and hordes of people at ground floor area (pop by the Tanglin Halt area and you know what I mean...)...I'm happy with 2 NTUCs and 1 Shop&Save. ...and yes, no no goldsmith please! Hoping for a TCC, a decent aquarium/pet shop, horticulture shop, handyfix shop ...these would be Might be a smart move to open a Handifix-or-equivalent shop soon before people start moving in as I noticed there is no Handifix shop in TPY...and I bet the guys would be spending some time in such shops within the first few weeks of moving in!

Maybe tomorrow open letterbox will have ! Just walked past Blk 79 earlier; noticed that 2 units (around 15-16th floor facing HDB Hub) in C and 1 unit in E (#35 corner unit facing back) got lights on. Wah must be overtime renovations! Now I wonder what shops will we have below us....bakery, hair salons, goldsmith, TCM, shops-that-last-a-few-months-then-harbez, ....I am just hoping that these shops will offer something different from the other TPY shops.....a TCC outlet (fat hope I think!) will really, really be great though!

I bet, other than the carpark being filled with cars of non-residents, so will both gardens be filled with non-residents and probably smoking as well! BTW, any Blk B-ers gotten their documents yet?

"The Probable Completion Date of your new flat is 4Q/2007. HDB will invite you to take possession of the flat when the construction of the flat is completed." Can't describe my feelings! !! Imagine if your X'mas present is...your house KEY! !!

Need Help For Armchair
CraB replied to zacey's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
I think you also meant "caster". check this link on Chair casters Changing the caster will help, but also check if this can be done easily? If it is just one of the casters not rotating smoothly, then change it (check with the shop you bought from). However, if all of the casters appear to have the same 'problem', then it may well be the design that it was meant not to roll so smoothly. Some people may not like their chairs to roll that smoothly. Imagine any upper body movement and your chair moves? In addition, perhaps more importantly, check if your casters are suitable for your floor type. Some good casters may come will 'rubber' padding, and some don't. In the end, you don't want to have scratch marks on your parquet floor. I found this on some website (hence some info in the last paragraph is not relevant in local context). Click on here, scroll down to "Office Safety", and click on the last point "Office Chair Casters" : Office chairs can be supplied with two types of casters. Based on the floor surface within the office area, caster selection is very important: • For use on carpeting; Order HARD wheel casters • For use on hard floors (i.e. tile); Order SOFT wheel casters • For use on vinyl floors; Order SOFT wheel casters • For use on chairmats; Order SOFT wheel casters. Departments must be sure to specify the appropriate type of caster when purchasing new office equipment. If you have the wrong type casters, your department must order new, appropriate casters, or install a rubber, carpet or plastic mat to protect the floor. Hard casters are not to be used on floor tiles. If a chair with hard casters is used on a hard floor, the casters will quickly remove the finish and begin abrading the tile surface and/or the caster itself. Besides damaging the flooring material, if the floor tiles contain asbestos, this abrasion, if severe enough, can cause asbestos particles in the tile to potentially be released. Newer floor tiles do not contain asbestos fibers, however, asbestos is common in older tiles. Contact EHS or Facility Services to determine if your tiles contain asbestos. To help determine what type of casters you have, use the following guidelines: • Hard casters usually become worn themselves and will have a very rough surface. Worn casters on a worn tile floor will be very noisy when rolled. • Soft casters you usually can dent the caster with your finger nail. • Contact EHS or Facility Services to determine caster type if needed. If you find you are using a chair with hard casters on a tile floor, have the casters replaced ASAP (Central Stores has some styles of casters), or have Custodial bring you a walk off mat until the chair or casters can be replaced. If your tiles contain asbestos and are damaged, contact EHS immediately at 2320 for evaluation of the problem and proper action to take. -
My previous neighbours were friendly folks. Some were noisy, but at least they were still friendly. Well, the new ones I have now are !! : (1) A newly-wed couple who doesn't smile at all (the HB has a 'giam-chai' face). Tried to smile and break the ice in the lift once, but HB gave me the 'don't talk to me' face. Bloodie I felt like I just talked to the lift wall! (2) An Ah-ma who bloody smokes in the lift when she brings her granddaughter down to a nearby preschool. She actually tried to hide her cig in her hand! (3) Someone who drags feet all the way to the common rubbish-chute and releases the chute, resulting in a loud bang (and always chooses to dispose of rubbush after midnite). Everynite, without fail. (4) A neighbor who frowns at me but speaks a little to my wife (give me a feeling of 'kuar-suai [looking-down]); resulting in me also frowning at her whenever I see her... If only neighbors are more understanding and considerate.... thankfully I only have a few months more before I move!

Need Help For Armchair
CraB replied to zacey's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
See if you can bring it back to change? Or perhaps check with seller (make a call) if it is meant not to move that much? Actually, what you mean by "doesn't seem to be able to move properly"? The wheels don't rotate easily, or they are very tight? -
Interesting...from no eating in room to dolls to ghosts/spirits..... I seldom eat in my room, but my free-roaming rabbit eats around the clock in my room! I also have shoes in my room (only a few pairs); I never strike 4D (cos I never buy); and my wife has many stuff toys in cupboards (but no displayed dolls); never cut nails after midnight (why wait till midnight to cut nails in the first place?). I remember several years ago, there was this shop at the top floor of Centrepoint that sells very human-like dolls. That was one freaky shop that I never went or walked past! Never liked dolls; even those 'black-black' ones that you see selling at Paragon. And I hate chucky. Yucks! Hmm, does a teletubby qualify as human-like doll? Can't imagine what/who would want to 'possess' Lala or whatever...

Smell From Neighbours Cooking
CraB replied to Screwed's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
Wah, a neighbor that smokes is the WORST !! !! !! ! Really makes me !! Just want to spray water at the person to extinguish the cigarette... And dunno why these smokers always choose to smoke when I go to bed (i.e. after 11pm). They cannot sleep, so must spread the 'sleeplessness' around! Currently still waiting for keys to new flat, but current place don't really have problem of smell from neighbor's cooking. Perhaps it has also got to do with the wind direction. But if it is 'kiam' fish, then harbeiz man...and all my laundry also harbeiz... I think the best solution is either the kitchen exhaust fan suggestion or to ventilate the kitchen/living room (i.e. open windows and door, but close the kitchen window). -
Visited Blk D last nite around 9pm. Warm nite and wanted to see whether it will be windy up there. A bit of breeze at 20th floor; 40th floor is very windy (means no need for aircon for me!). Also, we noticed a bunch of 'ah beng kia' hanging around Blk C-D void deck; they were at the 12th floor garden from Blk D but could not access the garden as it was all boarded up. I suggest you all keep a lookout for young punks hanging around the blks during the nite , as it can be a ghost town for now and no idea what these kiddos are up to (vandalizing, whatever). Some workers spotted working on Blk B entrance scaffolding though. Anyway, don't want events that happen at Tanglin Halt flats to happen here too! I wonder if the HDB rubbish chute is in 'operation'? At moment there is only one family; dun think the rubbish truck would come as yet? Otherwise, do remember not to dispose leftovers from the gathering into the chutes. Who knows when the chute vehicle would come! Hi Alister FYI, we saw 4-legged zikzaks crawling around at 40th storey; watch out for their droppings too!

If HDB ever come to check, THEN you will kena ..... Don't think it is allowed to be removed....besides, it ain't easy to remove as it is not any common door....it is a bomb-shelter door, not just a wooden door. I think not advisable to remove at all; in case of real emergency (i.e. Toa Payoh kena bom*, or HDB come and do sudden spot-check), where got time to ask contractor to put back for you? He take $$$ and bye-bye loh I think the crack looks bad enough for HDB to investigate....maybe one of the blk C people should inform HDB when collecting keys? And with water leaking through......nuff said.

went pass juts now.... , part of the fence is back again.... !! , sianz 1/2 ...but there is still hope...looks like all the external painting for blk b is done now; perhaps it's down to handing the keys over to HDB next... Anyway, seems that work is not stopping even on weekends. Was raining earlier, but could still see workers working on the windows of blk A. Quite crowded at the front of blk C today....

Saw (yesterday) that part of the fence in front of Blk B is being removed....perhaps signs of Blk B is finishing and gonna be next to get the letters .....keeping my fingers crossed!

Parquet 'insects' ?
CraB replied to karencQ's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
probably termites (does wings fall off easily? Two distinct body parts? (Ants have three distinct body parts))...if these have wings, means they either: (1) flew in from outside (usually after a very heavy rain in the evening) (2) the nest is inside your house (these are emerging 'reproductives' leaving a nest) Anyway, if it is (1), act fast to get rid of these 'reproductives' (i.e. potential queens and kings) as you only need 1 pair of male and female to create a new colony. Check if your parquet is treated with anti-termite chemical? Don't panic; call the pestbusters. !! -
That's fast! A glimmer of hope for blk B

Inconsiderate Neighbours
CraB replied to Air's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
Interesting thread going on here..... I agree that education's the 'wisest' way; but problem is the older generation may tend to be more stubborn....but can't understand why people just cannot be a bit more considerate for others. Burning incense at the corridor (I got this also, but now no more), throwing rubbish and letting chute off suddenly (then all the neighbours will know you just threw your rubbish with the sound of a loud 'bang'!), talking loudly, walking noisely, kids running and DELIBERATELY stomping the floors......the list never ends. BTW, I have to agree that the direction of the bamboo looks 'threatening'. In fact, just looking at the photograph makes you feel threatened! Seems as if it is pointing at you.... -
Haunted Experiences At Home
CraB replied to white_affair's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
This thread is 'interesting' and scary at the same time! I had one experience of 'something' pressing on me when I was in pri 1. Felt like, I knew I was already awake, but somehow I cannot move at all! Dunno why I never panic or anything; later everything ok liao.....many years later my sister said something about 'spirits' sitting on you. It was then I realized and remembered the incident... But just a few years ago (in another resale flat), I felt 'something' on me. But this time different; it's like I wanted to sleep, but simply cannot. Next day I realized it is actually something I ate (can't remember whether it is medicine or tea/coffee) that kept me awake. I guessed there are reasons why some of us see 'things'; most important of all is to live life and 'do good'. Also, as a Christian, I always say the one prayer whenever I am 'afraid'. -
Thanks for your info! Will try to pop in with a camera this weekend, if the owners/renovators allow...

It's a bit early but, would like to know if anyone in BLk C 4-room gotten their keys? If so, can share the locations of the powerpoints? This can be done easily by drawing it into the floor plans. Would like to at least know where these are, so that I can plan a bit on the layout. Kindly PM if you do? Thanks!
-
Think leave such things to HDB to check and sort out the problems. Building should be structurally safe; don't think they would want their reputation to be at stake! Are the 11th floor units also those with high ceiling? If so, could be that the waterproofing isn't done properly....anyway I better stop speculating. No idea about the earthquake-crack possibility though... Most importantly, upon getting the keys, the first thing to do is to do a thorough check on any faults in the unit, particularly those that HDB will have missed out on (e.g. hollow tiles, walls not at right angles, etc). Let the structural engineers deal with the mega problems (if there are any), and we on the inside ! So, no one from Blk D has started receiving keys yet I supposed? Think the prospect of getting mine by this year is gone in the wind....

Wah, you opening a mahjong 'du chang' is it ? I think, with 4-room unit, still can have 2 or more mahjong tables; but probably will have to install sound-proof walls (so that neighbours don't complaint!)... Am currently planning out the layout of the flat using Google Sketchup (thanks to my wife who told me bout this freeware). Kinda hard to put a wardrobe, queen-sized bed, and a simple shelf into the MBR. King-sized bed is definitely out of the question. Am thinking of whether anything can be done along the MBR corridor (the walkway after the MBR door and to the room itself)...seems to have some space there to place a shelf and yet ample width for walking... Anyway, more of Blk A's crowning was observed this morning. Things seems to be moving rather quickly on the outside; I hope it is the same for the inside! Still hoping for X-mas surprise gift...

Actually, other than the fact that chances of getting a 5-room was small and that it is $$$, the other thing that put me 'off' was the 'curve' wall. One of the walls in my room now is at an angle (like a trapezium). It's just so difficult to buy furniture and there's the problem of dead spaces; happy hiding places for creepie crawlies! to HDB for still coming up with such designs... they really deserve Just another small issue. I noted that, for Blk C 4-roomers, do note that for units on the left, your door swings right (i.e. it swings into the living room). In Blk B (and D and maybe A and E?), the door swings the other way (i.e. against the wall of the bomb shelter). Do take note of this when discussing with your ID. I think there are pros and cons for both designs, so do not fret over this!
