its because the fishes are rear in ponds and when they are cooked, they hv a mud smell... but in china, there are 3 type of fishes available. one is freshly catched from the sea, one from the lake and one from river. whats the difference? and im comparing edible fishes here... sea - fish are fresh, vy soft meat, vy delicious (some call it sweet ), only available in big restuarant coz they are the only one who can afford to bid for these fishes and these fishes are big in size. lake - mind you, china's so call lake ("hu") are vy vy big. its like it can flood half of peninsula Msia easily. during my travel, we pass by one of the lake, and the local told us that there is an island in the middle of the lake, and the area of the island is bigger is Spore fish from the lake are smaller in size, although there may be some bigger fishes. fishes here are fresh as well you can still get this fishes in smaller restaurants. river - china's river is vy loooonnnngggg.... but muddly. so the fish here do not taste that gd, got muddy smell. but they can be reared type by fish rearing families / companies or they can be those escaped or free & easy fishes besides fishes, there are others like clay fish and other smaller edible sea creatures also. these are call "He Xian" - river seafood these river seafood are generally more cheaper and fishes are smaller. but with proper cooking method, such smell can be covered. eg. people will cleverly fried the fish or cooked in strong smelling soup (eg. hot spicy soup) to cover the mud smell.

oh, forgot to add, why the company has to be small... its becoz air-con is simply mechanical stuffs, nothing too high tech, and its juz a skill installation job, so its consider easy to do. and that's why there are tons of small air-con companies fighting for jobs. and for servicing, where people juz come and do 'water-cleaning' your filter instead of chemical cleaning, i know some small company are charging at $6 to $9 per fancoil! these small company do not hv a shop space, they juz buy 2 or 3 vans, put all necessary equipments inside and employ 3 indian workers and together with the boss, start to do biz already. basically this is the same as installing of air-con. wat company A can do, company B also can do. so competition is there and so beside comparing on fair ground on the brand, type of equipments and materials they are able to supply, you will know whether they are expensive or not coz the rest are labour cost.

wah that's cheap already lor... mine was quoted at least $400 - $500 den my hb say might as well get new sofa well, go ikea take a look and see if you can find cheaper alternative. and also if you do hv the measurement, go spotlight and ask if you choose the fabric, pay them some $, will they tailor for you? and also do you mind if you can share with me your contact for doing your sofa cover? im looking for ppl who can do at cheaper price also
-
actually, for non-mechanical / non-engrg / non-constrn trained people or not in these line people, its kinda hard to explain hw to monitor the installers, check their work and the procedures they take and their experience. if you are in this line, you will know how 'deep' (aka experience) the installers are by shooting some uncommon questions and see how they reply. but no matter hw gd the installers are, they are not perfect. even big reputable company can also make mistakes. dun be surprise that condo owners hv more complains den HDB owners even though their air-con are subcontracted by larger company. and no, for housing air-con, its not really that profitable. only profitable if you hv the following setup. 1 boss 1 clerk cum accounts 3 site foreman (your own regular experience men) 12 workers (indians will require lower salary) and mind you, if you hv larger company and only doing hm split units sales and installation, you really hv to hv alot of projects. the real profit comes from doing central system type of air-con where ducting is involved and thats what we call as ACMV - Air-conditioning & Mechanical Ventilation.

we shall wait and see how he rectify the problems. its going to be a major rectification works considering majority of the works are done already. - the out of measurement cabinet (dun forget if bottom cabinet change size, do take note of the top ones. some people want it to be in line with the bottom ones so that it look nicer and if in such case, whew! major rectification leh) - the poor tiling works - the low standard / quality of laminate provided - the poor workmanship for laminate - poor carpentry workmanship - make up for loss of fridge base - make gd of everything - loss of time or delay caused to owner -
ever ask for a quote from them. standard price, not really cheap. suggest you go and ask from Mega Discount Store and Federal. I hv posted something on air-con quotes in the air-con thread. you can check it out and give the various shops a call for your quotations.

most of the curtain shops will tailor sofa cover for you. unless your sofa size is standard size as ikea's sofa, you can go there to buy. if not, go back to the place where you buy your sofa and ask them if they carry extra cover, some of them do and are willing to sell to you. and also some furniture shops do tailor extra sofa covers for you if you buy sofa from them. the price of the cover will be cheaper den to get from outside shops.

mine is a king koil divan set. my mattress is those for back support type so more harder but vy vy comfy. i think its called something like chiropratic mattress (i dunno really know hw its spell). so far its being used for 5 years and its still as gd as new. it is not those type of springy or soft mattress where when you lie on it, you will either spring or sink into it. and the side of the mattress did not droop as well. some cheap mattress will kinda droop at the 4 sides after years of usage. and i hv a 10years warranty for it.

oh abt that, pls do do do REMEMBER NOT TO GIVE ANY BEGGARS (BE IT KIDS, ADULTS, MONKS, NUNS, OLD FOLKS, WITH AND WITHOUT HAIR) ANY $$$ coz once u give, the whole load of army of beggars cum targeting at you and your group the monks & nuns dun come out of the monastery to beg for $. and they hv enough to eat in the monastery. same as in Thailand. Monks only ask for alms (not beg) for food and not beg for $$ and also only men can touch them and their alm bowl or be touch by them when they saying prayers for you. for women, we are not allow to even touch their alm bowls.. the food hv to be place on the flr infront of them and you juz leave it there for them to take themself. i work and stay in Thailand for quite some time too. some of these monks or beggars come from Mongolian or Tibet side. They are mostly involve in burglary, thefts, break-in, pick pocketing etc. in China city areas. hw to differentiate them? they usually are of darker skin color, curly hair, thick eyebrows, talks funny local language (their dialect), and usually alot of those people are selling mutton soups, meat, small eatery shops aka 'xiao chi dian', illegal food push carts, funny looking breads etc. which i strongly do not encourage anyone to try from them. wait eat already, you fainted and they 1 whole group of them bring you elsewhere to rob you and turn you into their delicacies to start selling to another innocent soul again

if you are having a new sink and you purchase the sink at elsewhere, there are no sink tap holes provided. there are 2 options: 1st, bring your tap to the hardware shop where you bought your sink and get the people there to drill a hole for your tap. 2ndly, give the holeless sink and tap to your contractor. they will do all the necessary work. but do check with your contractor 1st, they are able to give you a better guide. and if you hv an existing sink, suggest you turn off the water supply to your that particular sink and dismantle your current tap. but dismantling the tap need some study into. if your tap is easily dismantle due to its design and the space allowed at the bottom of the sink where the tap and pipe connects, den you only need a normal spanner to turn it to dismantle it. but you need to hv the right pattern (the correct 'seh') in dismantling the tap. but if your tap space underneath the sink is too cramp, you need a box spanner to dismantle which can be bought at hardware shop. so its best to get your contractor to do it coz he will hv all sorts of tools to do it.

well, i happen to read this thread. juz like to share with you guz that out of 3 couples, 1 couple is surounding divorce actions, 1 couple is having problems in marriage and those couples who are having problems do not actually tell anyone or make it known as we are still conservative asians with conservative thinkings that such things are best keep under covers. well, 2 persons come to fall in love with each other as they only see each other's good. both will keep yearning to be together, to be married to each other, to hold each other forever, to love the person forever... but hv anyone actually ask why when both married and live together, quarrels, disagreements, squabbles, unhappiness and many other unpleasant things start to happen? this is coz we each hv an ideal idea or stereotype that we want our partners to become, eg. we want them to be able to help out in hsehold chores, hv alot of common sense in wat can be done and wat can't be done, expect them to able be that perfect someone who can perform anything ideally and correctly. and when the partner can't do it, falls out of our expected ideal partner type, we start to argue with each others. unhappiness starts to arise and in days to come, problems start to look like small snowball being rolled into a big snowball, uncooked food turn to cooked food, and love starts to feel like water starts to boil and evaporated into the air into nothing suddenly. well, no matter how one ages, you hv to treat each other like kids. kids learn something everyday and of coz also commit mistakes and err in judgement. take for example, your kid spill a cup of milk on your fabric sofa, which is so hard to clean and may even leaves an ugly mark and smells. one normally gets frustrated and our 1st instinct is to scold the culprit, but hv you ever think that such confrontation leaves a mark in the kid's learning experience and may be hurt in someway. the spilled milk can be cleaned, so wat if the sofa can't be cleaned, the main thing is to teach the kid to becareful not to hurt himself and be more careful in handing breakable cups and spillable liquid. adults are the same, no one like to be scolded, confronted or being blamed for something they had did. if one can think that no other things are more impt than preserving both love for each other, other things like respect etc. will come naturally. all people, including you and me, like being pampered. basically, when we live together we start to judge each other on things that our partners are able to perform, and this tend to be the start of the pickings. and also we start to see each other 24hrs in our truest form and this may not match wat we thought they are. even the smallest things will set both to quarrels. if you find there is a real serious problem in your relationship, look for counselling. although many will say its kinda stupid and silly telling strangers abt your problems and you would also think wat will they know abt the pain you went through, you are right. nobody can understand your pain, but they are able to tell you their life story and experiences and that is where we can pick up tips on how to better solve your problems. life is full of happiness, sadness, ups, downs and problems. and this is life. if without this, this is not life at all.

in constrn line, its vy common to sub out the work. that is the word we used. unless your company is big and can afford and find that its feasible and profitable to maintain own different team of workers for different works, if not most of it are sub out. ususally for such renovation firms, or ID or whatever you call them, most of their jobs are sub out to smaller contracting firms, and these firms may hv 1 boss, 1 clerk, 5 workers? cannot afford to hv too many workers, cannot feed them !! these smaller subcontracting reno firms ususally try to get as many jobs as possible for survival and their workers could be regular ad-hoc workers or really ad-hoc workers and most of them are Msians. Hw to find Sporean to do such labour work nw? and some of these firms, if they meet the MOM requirement for employing foreign workers, they will try to employ indians which are even more cheaper than Msians. -
Potted Orchids
leen replied to karen77sg's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
most of the pasar malam stores' orchids are taken from Thailand moutain areas where the altitute is high and the temperature is cooling. in SG, they cannot make it. you can check out yellow pages on those orchid nurseries at Lim Chu Kang. when you go there, ask the people there for questions related to planting (not only orchids, other plants also can). and do look at those not so nice looking orchids, eg. dendrobrium - purple type which is vy commonly seen selling in mkt etc., where they are put at. these are the most durable type of orchid. our Vanda Ms Joaquim also vy durable. if they are put in open sunshine, those type need alot of sun. if they got netting or under roof type, these require more shade and lesser sunlight. another way is look at the leaves. the broader and bigger the leaves, means it need alot of sunlight. the slimmer it is, it require lesser sunlight. and the best way to plant them is not by watering daily, they will be overflooded and die fast as root will rot first. they like to be tie to charcoal with abit of clay pieces at the root areas and hang up. this is to ensure that the root is dry and there is sufficient water. any excess will be drain or wind off. i think you should go nursery and ask for indoor plants. do not go to those at thomson, amk, bedok areas, etc. as they are more commercialise and whatever you ask, they also say can. from wat i know, amk nursery got cheap pots that are suitable for orchid planting. and also charcoal and clay must be soaked in water for a while before putting in the pot. and also orchids like clean environment. you can dust them with feather duster. dirty and dusty environment make them sick. -

Potted Orchids
leen replied to karen77sg's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
orchid cannot go without sunlight. most basic beginner type durable orchid must hv abt 50%-75% sun and 50%-25% shade. too much sun, the orchid will be burnt aka sunburnt like humans, den leaves will yellow with chao tar marks. too little sun also cannot survive. and dun anyhw go nursery or pasar malam buy those flowering plants that hv beautiful blooms coz most those plants mostly are from hilly areas where air is cool and if in SG, you need to air-con them at 15-18deg celsius, spray water sparsely at leaves (rite, at leaves and not at roots coz it will rot the roots) and give them the rite kind, amt and frequency of fertiliser (too much the plant will die) and type of insecticide to kill differnt type of bugs, slugs, pests, spiders, virus etc.
