  1. Do you guys (in HDBs) feel safe not locking the metal gate? My hubby has suggested that so we only need to buy one digital lock, but I'm a bit worried leh haha!!
  2. Turns out, the gas heater needs a clearance of 1 feet on all sides... So they are coming down to alter it for me next Wednesday. Dang irresponsible workers! Heartpain cus (1) more drill holes in my brand new house! and (2) will have more exposed copper piping and (3) need to go measure how it'll affect my washer/dryer and my drying rack that HDB provided. Perhaps this is why most people go for storage heaters. DANGNABBIT. But ah well, as long as there is a solution!
  3. Yep, we established that we wanted it to feel like a home regardless of how long we'll stay in it! But the practical, businessy side of me comes out and wants to balance the check books. I guess there's virtue in both angles. I think we balanced it pretty well as of now; i.e. bathtub but no custom carpentry in the rooms; custom-made cabinets but no Caesar/Silestone... So I guess I just have to trudge on. Hopefully it will feel like a home... And as I work from home, hopefully my home office will feel great and the rest of the house a sanctuary like you mentioned. Thanks for the feedback!
  4. So good, got off-peak work season one... Haha! Mine's peak all year round. But cannot complain, got business is good thing. But I keep getting distracted by renovations. Especially since my renos are at a standstill now that I have to wait for my carpentry (totally our own fault). I just picked up a biz class and started getting my planner ready for the last quarter of the year and 2016. Haha! Planning for next year's business plans + vacations means less thinking about the house and more thinking about the future. My hubby also quite chillax one... Only the women so anxious to see the "end result". Haha!
  5. Hey! Thanks for the suggestions. There will be open shelving on this side as well. I personally don't like the full height cabinets though they have been suggested to me, and I don't like a cluttered home... My idea was to have as much open shelving and an airy feel as possible, and we are pretty minimalistic people (at least for the past 7 years) in terms of owning things. So that's why the other side looks so bare! Haha! The shelves will be store bought instead of custom made like the other side, as my contractor suggests, so that's why it's not in the "technical" drawing for the carpenter.
  6. Yeah my contractor said the inner cabinets will be very oily and smelly if I don't let it vent outwards!
  7. Depends on what kind you buy. Rustoleum has a Universal range that's designed for furniture and thus very durable. The lady in the link has sprayed bar stools for a year and suffered no rub offs. That said, spray paints go from $3.50 to $30 (universal range) so you get what you pay for!
  8. No! Only telescopic hoods with no vents built in at the front area where it juts out (the hood will jut out regardless, even before you pull it out right? Check that un-pulled out area to see if there's a vent). If the vent is circular and on top of the hood itself then need this cabinet hack...
  9. Haha I know. They spray everything and it's gorgeous! Check this out: http://www.livelovediy.com/2014/02/10-things-you-should-know-about-spray.html?m=1
  10. This is a rough guide of my kitchen cabinets. See the "flip up" cabinet area above the hood? That's his design for me to open while cooking so I won't hit the doors etc or have it be in the way. If not another option is to have vents (he offered la, like the heating / aircon vents at hotel? The rectangular shaped ones) instead of the flip up cabinets. You can ask your ID, my contractor may be wrong, I don't know, but for me better safe than sorry so follow first.
  11. Rust-o-leum from Selffix DIY. Homefix don't have hor don't go wrong. Anyway, my friends in the US use the rustoleum range to spray FURNITURE and still holds up, so I'm gonna trust it!
  12. I got the same hood and oven! Remember to ask your ID/Contractor about the hood. My contractor told me that this hood doesn't have a vent in the protruding part, so that means it will not suck properly if the top of the hood is all covered in the cabinets... Not sure how to explain this. He gave me 2 options, either to install vent holes on top of the hood in the cabinets (my hubby think this is ugly) or to build a opening (cabinet opening upwards) so that I can open it while I'm cooking. Food for thought. The carpenter insist don't need, but my contractor insisted need so I trust my contractor. I didn't think of it beforehand when I bought.
  13. Busy myself with work and earning money After all, the more work done the more money needs to go out. Since we're paying everything by cash and no loan, it's good to take a bit of time and stagger the payments. But on the other hand also anxious to see results. So only can throw myself into work.
  14. Gas heater up... The gas piping was done very very well, seems like my shelves will look good. Carpenter came down for the kitchen cabinets and said my gas heater looks too close to the water piping, and as the top gets hot, it could burn and damage it. Now I need to call citygas and ask them if this clearance is reasonable... Ah well you live and learn.
  15. Just add one more socket la if you need more? I chose gas heater as my current place uses it at 16F and the water pressure is fine. But no rain shower though. I think can use but the rain shower cannot be too big. Mine is wayyyyy big at 25cm so just gonna test, if cannot then I'll go change to a smaller one. I also chose gas heater cus of my bathtub, wouldn't be economical to heat up with electricity every time IMO.
  16. haha ya que sera sera Don't need to think yet! as long as we are in good financial standing for the future im happy!
  17. Nice! With the LED strips confirm chio! Did you get from TB too?
  18. Hahaha! Both EMs?! Wow! Haha. I LOVE EMs! Your house turned out great, so even if it's another 7 years, I'm sure it'd be super comfy. Haha. worth la! Hubby says, spend here save there lor. We alre saved cus we married very young and simply, and got the BTO for very good price, so might as well make it a little cozier for ourselves here. So I guess it's like that haha! I think too much. 50yo in a 23yo body.
  19. Haha I so get you! I've been living in a small room previously and am renting a studio apartment now... Getting a new place of my own is awesome! Just that we're always doing financial planning for the future so thought whether it's wise to really invest in the first home that we will eventually leave. But hubby and you guys woke me to my senses! It's gotta be nice no matter what and at our age we can always have options open. And having the 3R also gives us the financial flexibility to upgrade whenever we wish after the 5 years. So save there liao, might as well spend a bit more on the house! Thanks for all the thoughts. Appreciate it guys.
  20. Exciting times! I feel ya, ours also came unexpectedly fast. Haha. Enjoy it!!
  21. Edmund did provide a small 3D for the long side for me! Haha! Not using track lights but still quite ok.
