  1. Hello! Can pm me the contact details of your electrician? Thanks in advance.
  2. Have been reading all the posts and somehow feel that all the covs and all the flat valuations mentioned so far seem reasonable. Bought a two room flat at commonwealth crescent, first floor, valued at 73k and cov 13k back in 1996. The house had to be renovated some more and so further damages of 5k.Also I did not apply for any grants either. Reason we bought the place was it was right opposite Tanglin Halt food centre (open 24 hours) and wet market, PAP kindergarten and other shops selling foodstuffs, clothes and household items. Barber shops econ minimarts and what nots. Only downside was no NTUC and had to shut all windows before going to bed cause ground floor mah!!. Whenever I felt bored staying home with my very small two kids, a walk around the neighbourhood shops always cheered me up just like window shopping in malls!! Everyone said I was stupid to forgo the 4 room new chua chu kang hdb flat to urgently buy a resale two roomer on ground floor. I was pregnant with my second child, staying in a common room in my parent's 3 room flat, was sharing the toilets with them and to wait two more years for a four room flat did not seem a very bright idea. After a major upgrading in 2002 the kitchen was bigger and two years later I sold the flat for 100k no cov to move into a five room new direct hdb flat in seng kang. That is when I felt I had paid too much for the flat back in 1996 but hubby assured me that we had lived a good 8 years there next to all amenities, eaten enough midnight snacks and raised two sons in our own house!! Sometimes you cannot measure valuable experience and joy monetarily!! Just my two cents' worth.
  3. Congratulations on the successful completion. Thank you for your updates and pictures. Also am grateful for the review of the contractor's work. I am looking forward to calling him to come down and see my house very soon. Most probably after HariRaya or in September to accomodate my poly going son's exams and semester. Thank you for his contact too!! Post a picture after you have moved in and settled down!!
  4. Yeap your kitchen is definitely looking good! I don't know about you but my hands are itching to cook in the new kitchen! Yes, that is how good looking it is!! Anyway that is how I feel about kitchens. Don't go and play play lifting the uninstalled glass hob You don't want to damage it. It is good to have the brand name displayed you know. There are people who don't know the differences between acryllic, pvc, frosted glass doors and BESGLASS doors! I bet there must be people who don't know the differences between solid surface, granite or iQuartz tops!! But they know how to READ!!
  5. koori said: My service balcony windows are new, so no film. Maybe should start the DIY there. Does the sunlight blocking also mean darkness? Coz my kitchen's natural source of light comes from service balcony, afraid of making it too dim/dark there. Not necessarily. It all depends on the colour of the film. Privacy films come in many colours and styles. If your priority is maximum privacy and minimum light blockage, I recommend go for the patterned ones. Choose big patterns or floral designs on translucent vinyl( the lighter the background colour the better). This color should not be evident when looking through the window from the inside, but it might be more obvious when looking at it from the outside. You can also go for sheer decorative film which is ideal for letting maximum light and color penetration while still lightly obscuring the view through a window.Semi-translucent films block out images while allowing some light to penetrate. And because you can cut and fit film to any size, you need cover only as much of the glass as is necessary, or plan a design that is only partially cloudy. Be extra careful when choosing coloured ones as certain colours might get reflected in the room like red and purple.
  6. I am even particular. I do not allow anyone into the kitchen when I am cooking!! Anyways I am the only one who can cook and cooks in my family of four. My two boys when they were kids would stay outside the kitchen area playing or reading/studying. Never entered the kitchen while I am there cooking or they would have it from me! No door or safety gates on the entrance into the kitchen. No one else there for me to watch over the kids while I was cooking so I would just put them in the playpen when they were babies/toddlers and push the playpen very near the entrance of the kitchen. I would talk to them and sometimes sing to them. They would watch me cook, clean in the kitchen and fall asleep knowing their mother was watching them all the time. I always mop up the whole kitchen after each time I cook to clean up oil/water spillages. Have been doing this for the past 24 years. Now my grown up sons still do not enter the kitchen when I am cooking! They still dutifully stand outside chatting with me.
  7. The film on the windows is a must thing if you want privacy without drawing curtains. I DIY two kitchen windows myself and simply loved the big floral designs on the green background. Mine blocked out sunlight too!! You can find appropriate ones at DIY stores. But the removing part I am not confident myself!
  8. My husband and i went down to the genting road main showroom to look over some of their products. We were pretty much by ourselves but that was alright as we weren't placing any orders that day itself. Looked at hoods and hobs and this very eager uncle explained many things to us. Really a good service I must say but kept insisting that we place an order for the hood and hob that he was pushing us to buy. Said that the products were on offer for a limited period only and that we should pay an advance, place an order then and can request for a later date delivery. Managed to get away by saying we would come back the next day with our contractor!! Service was really good. 2008 to 2014 - six years had since passed and their attitude is still the same!!Really regret not reading this thread before going to the Jalan berseh branch. Hubby and I walked in but weren't allowed to look around at all. A man , not old at all , told it was closing time already. By the way it was 6 pm on a monday and they close at 7pm only!! Did not give us a reply when asked about the operating hours during weekdays and weekends. We apologised and left thinking we had actually went in during closing time. Slightly down the same corridor Song Cho , really nearing closing time and no one was there save for one salesgirl. She dutifully followed us around and talked cheerfully. Smiled and said "That's alright. Please come back." when we left apologetically empty handed!!
  9. I too am looking for contractor only. Can pm me his contact info?
  10. Hello Moimoi. Did you try Hoe kee hardware at Blue building, No.8 Genting Road. Cause last time I checked there were quite a few. Universal union enterprises at 710 Geylang Road also carry quite a no. of wash basins.
  11. I am sorry to hear your plight. Renovating a house whether major or minor before moving in is vital. After moving in you have to bear all the inconveniences that come with renovation. Even more so when you have small children. Hope you resolve your problem soon. True. Do not borrow from moneylenders or loansharks. Don't add agony to your family life. My husband and I have been living on the policy of not borrowing money to buy or achieve anything. It is sometimes difficult especially when family , relatives or friends find that we are not up to their expectations. We do not care and we have been living a minimalist life since we married in 1990.The only debt we ever took is our housing loan as it is necessary to own the roof over your head. Other than that we try to save up to do something. Even now we are saving up to remodel the kitchen and toilets in our existing house. My husband is not a big earner but still we manage. Our children too are learning from us our way of life.
  12. hello jovin can provide me with the address and phone number of this place you went to. thanks a million
  13. I am sorry OceanEleven. I however beg to differ. I have a very big kitchen (5 room flat) but keep my kitchen windows closed at all times even during cooking. This is to keep out noise from flat next door and to stop the draft from extinguishing the gas flame while cooking. I don't dry my clothes outside the kitchen window either. My kitchen lights are always on throughout the day since I keep windows closed. For someone like me, a service yard would be very useful at least to dry clothes indoors away from dripping dirty mops and falling bamboo poles with clothes. I really want a service balcony!!
  14. Check out who the owners are . If they are PRs they are probably selling to get back some of the COV they had given so that they can take back home a lump sum of money. These people are returning to their own country.
