  1. good luck! Enjoy the process! (and try not to think about the hole in your pocket)
  2. In the meantime, a couple of things we found that we like! 1. Handford Sofa and ottoman for living room. Currently finding out if it can be customed to be about 210cm long to fit more people. The original shop say max 195cm. Another custom place say max 200cm cos of HDB lift. I have one more source to try! 2. Y table. Will most likely be getting second charm to replicate this. Wood for DIY table top simply too expensive. 3. Electrolux vacuum. Love that its main body detaches into a handheld vacuum and its cordless. Nice colours and bagless too. Just not quite sure about suction power at 18W....Anyone has a review on this?
  3. So! We are finally, officially homeowners! I'm over the moon! Got the keys today and was surprised at how quick the whole process was. Just 10 mins in the office. Didn't even need to sign anything. Unfortunately, we won't be able to start work right away. I suspect we confirmed our ID a little late and its only now that she's rendering 3D for us. Some ppl do hacking simultaneously but she's going on holiday soon and I'm waiting for the 3D to make a few decisions on hacking. (We are planning to tear down a wall to create a special feature but I noticed an irritating beam that might spoil the look. So if it looks weird in the 3D, i'll scrap the idea.) So as a result, work might only start at the end of this month. Ah well, better to delay things a bit and get it right than to rush it and screw up.
  4. You could do the mature thing and wait. But its SOOO much more satisfying to get it all right now. haha
  5. Hey greg, I just tried gng into taobao with all your keywords! awesome!! But i can't seem to find where we can sort by seller rating to get crown and above. I always click then see hearts or 2 diamonds. waste time. help?!
  6. Things have slowed down considerably. We are waiting for the 3D renderings which will take about 2 weeks to finish. And everything seems to be pending that. I don't know how to purchase other items like sofa/ tv console etc without knowing the look via the 3D. Also want a lighting plan from the ID so i know how many of which type of lights to buy. Our ID seems a little busy at this point which is somewhat disappointing since I thought this was the period when we should be meeting a lot and trashing out details before we start work in mid june. I mean, once work starts then it will be too late right? meh...
  7. So I've spent a lot of time trying to source for table top materials. Thought of using hardwood flooring, but most places don't sell flooring at such small amounts. Thought of ikea but their worktops are odd sized and mostly coated with some sort of laminate which means i can't just join 2 planks or shave stuff down. finally got 2 wood suppliers but the 1 quote I got so far wasn't promising. A walnut top of the size i want would cost me $790 cash and carry. Hair pin legs imported from overseas would cost about $220 including shipping. So the table would already cost about $1100 including odds and ends. A fully completed and customised table by second charm would be $1500. soooo... most likely no more DIY. sigh. No fun.
  8. Congrats on your purchase! Why not get the play 1 at the same time? *poison poison* haha.
  9. Hi mavi! I'm also very keen to see how you put all the wires through your console and study table. In general I think your wiring infrastructure is very carefully thought out.
  10. I have found door quotes to be very varied. One ID charged 300 per door. Another charged 500. My ID that i picked charged me $780 per door. So feel better about what you paid yeah?
  11. I would have done the same as you. the broken up pieces would look odd and would irritate me no end. Easy to forget about the space lost after a while. Apparently, when we first discussed this problem, we all used the wrong measurements for the sink that I wanted. We thought it was a 1.2m long sink. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? 1.2m for a sink is ridiculous!! But apparently thats what we did. So after she revised the numbers, it seems that we will have about 60cm of workstation to use without having the extend out the counter. We also took a smaller sink in the end. My practical wife reminded me that the small one already fits our wok so what else do I want it for? In my head, bigger is always better. lol!
  12. oh dear. Leaks are scary! the moment it happens everything has to be ripped up. Glad that you managed to find a decent fix! But that kinda thing would PISS ME OFF. lol
  13. My kitchen design is problematic too!! Wanted to plan based on our workflow in the kitchen. But then the counters weren't long enough to fit what we needed together cos of a bloody column that made the wall uneven. ID also suggested boxing up the area to make the wall flush but it seems like such a waste! 20cm depth over about 1.5m.
  14. Hey Bianzi, i personally feel that you would get a similar sound quality with a cheaper samsung soundbar. The Sonos is wireless of course and the interface could be attractive, but the full benefit will only come into play if you have several speakers placed all over the house; when you can play different songs at the same time all through your ipad. If you're only planning on a bar and woofer, then my advice would be to save the money.
  15. Haha thanks but need to find the materials for it. And the space to work in... Singapore is really not suited for these DIY projects. But then again I guess that's why I will get to brag about it if I complete it.
  16. This was the table i was hoping to create. http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2012/12/elsies-.html
  17. Got inspired by a friend who used crate pallets to make a coffee table! I've been searching high and low for a dining table that suits my very odd dimensions but now I'm thinking maybe I'll make one! To that end, I trekked to Ikea to find loose timber that I could fashion into a table top and then maybe I'll get trestle legs or the currently fashionable 3 leg hairpins (3 leg for added strength) to use as table legs and voila! A super cheap and beautiful dining table. Plus bragging rights for having made it. Unfortunately, ikea doesn't do loose timber anymore! Then I looked around for furniture that I could cannibalise for parts to make the table top but all the sizes were off and because of the laminate-ish finish (they didn't have a solid wood plank) I realised I couldn't saw them down or glue them together seamlessly. Hmm.. i need to find a lumber yard in singapore... Or maybe I'll just use Second charm in the end. They say that they can mimic a table i liked in solid teak for a very reasonable price. I would lose bragging rights, but the table also won't fall apart during dinner... hmm decisions decisions
  18. I've never seen those switches before. Where are they from? It looks a tad odd but I can definitely see benefits to using those if you're the type that buys a lot of electronics from overseas. Personally, I'm probably more inclined to use extension cables that have the multistandard function.
  19. I saw your speakers. Didn't audition them cos I was looking for small and discreet, but nothing beats the warmth and depth of one of those. And with your vinyls? Orgasmic! Are you getting the funky ones from plaza sing?
  20. Sorry but whats the point of converting phone lines to LAN points? Does the wiring need to be changed also or are they also similar to CAT6? Does this mean that if I can convert my phone points, i don't need to run CAT6 cables all over the place?
  21. Can i ask how much you paid for citygas to come and install the thing? And did they come once or twice?
  22. how many ratings was the seller for the small tables? the swivel mirror idea is great!
  23. Was discussing my network plan with a colleague when we both should have been working. After reading blogs by maviscaste and kstoh, I'm sold on the idea of structured networking in the home. Too much of our lives are now connected to the net and too many devices benefit from being on the home network. Media players, tvs, printers, laptops... So without further ado, my plan: Instead of placing the router next to the ONT near my TV, I'm gng to run a long cable from the ONT to my study and place the router there. That means that the wireless reach should be a lot stronger and more even throughout the house. Running subsequent wires from the study out to the individual rooms also saves me wires! Versus running long cables from each room to the tv console. Plus I'm hoping that means the cables will be kept thinner and more manageable, and less unsightly. Also, having it all in the study is kinda appropriate since thats where my computer will be anyhow and it will allow me easy access if even I need to troubleshoot/ configure the system.
