First Home ~ 3 Room Bto: Ideas + Suggestions! :)
Harriette replied to janesuah's topic in Reno t-Blog Chat
Hi jane, Welcome to Bukit Panjang. Since both your mum and mum in law stay here, I guess you are very familiar with the town? I personally like the tranquility of the town and yet, ample amenities are nearby too. -
I Am Small But I Have All

Hi, Is your glass door shatter-proof? If not, you can consider getting 3M safety film. With the safety film, the glass pieces will be held together if the door is broken. The cost should be $100+ for your door size. I just wrote about my hubby suffering cuts from a broken glass ceiling lamp. It is very painful. It is also very tedious to clean up all the broken glass. Medical bill is $100 at the downstairs clinic. -
Curtains Here are some photos of the curtains. Somehow my photos look really dark. The real thing is much nicer. I paid $1,650 for the curtains in the living room, kitchen and 4 bedrooms. Each room has 2 layers of curtain - a sheer day curtain and a 90% dimout curtain. I thought the pricing was reasonable as my living room and MBR windows are quite big. I got the curtains from Creation Curtain House at Blk 928 Yishun Central 1, #01-151. Tel: 6759 3002. MBR toilet vanity Earlier, I shared that the mirror cabinet doors are longer than the cabinet to provide space for toothbrushes. Here's a recap: mbr vanity (2) by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr An ikea bygel railing has been mounted there: image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr 2 wire baskets from Daiso will hold toothpaste and tooth brushes. These will be hidden completely by the closed mirror doors. Yet, they will air-dry well. image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr

Solid surface installation (part 2 of 2) The solid surface for the kitchen along the wall came in 2 pieces. The workers used a machine to polish the joint until it completely disappear. They also cut a hole for the tap. image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr Mr Yeak's plumber then installed the taps. image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr A closer look at the sink. We opted for a sink that is integrated with the solid surface, so that there is no joint. image by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr

Moving on to happier matters, the solid surface has been installed by Ikea's contractor. An unfortunate accident While packing some stuff on Friday night at around 8+pm at our current 5-rm, hubby lifted the sarong cradle frame and hit the glass ceiling lamp. It shattered and hubby suffered cuts on his head, forehead and nose. He bled profusely. We rushed to the downstairs clinic where he scared the nurses and other patients. Fortunately, his injuries were just surface cuts. The doctor cleaned his wounds and gave him some stitches. He was advised not to wash the injured parts of his face and hair for 48 hours. Fortunately our toddler was unharmed. Costs: - $100 for clinic fees (it would be more if we had to go to a hospital A&E) - more clinic fees for removing stitches - discomfort/pain suffered by hubby - worry/anxiety suffered by me - vacuuming/mopping floor for at least 5 times to remove glass pieces Following this accident, I have ordered 3M safety film for my balcony and yard folding doors as these glass doors are not shatter-proof. Both Mr Yeak and my hubby had previously commented that these doors are quite safe and it is not necessary to install safety film on them. But because of this accident, I decided to purchase the safety film for my peace of mind. The other glass doors in my house are shatter-proof, so no worries there. Cost of 3M safety film : $426.

Ikea wardrobe (upstairs bedroom 2) This is a 250cm wide wardrobe. The design is quite nice. Ikea wardrobe (upstairs bedroom 3) This is a 200cm wide wardroom. It will have a pair of sliding doors - half mirror and half wood. The "wood" part is the same as door used in bedroom 2. Unfortunately, the mirror door was cracked. Ikea will deliver and assemble the replacement door another day.

Shoe cabinet (front view) The shoe cabinet is done. It has louvre doors, for ventilation. It can hold maybe 24 pairs of shoes comfortably. The empty groove is meant for the ikea's magnetic board. The magnetic board is up. We intend to stick messages and schedules (ie. doctor/dental appointments, school timetable, etc) here.

Hi Tarzanboy, Yes, Mr Yeak did the tiling, wardrobes and cabinets. Mr Yeak did all the works in my house, except the Ikea kitchen and aircon installation. I'm using 9w LED downlights, from Philips. You can check the price with any Philips's authorised dealers. I bought mine from e-Warehouse, which is located at Orion Building, #01-08, 160 Paya Lebar Road, S409022. Tel: 6743 6428.

Hi, The shoe containers look good. May I have the link? How many pairs of shoes can you fit per container?

Hi Xiaohuiis, You may want to consider having shower equipment in both bathrooms. It will be useful during confinement time if your confinement lady stays with you. Often, mother or mother in law may volunteer to stay a few nights to help with the newborn. We usually bathe in the MBR toilet. My ikea Pax wardrobe in the MBR has been doing well for the past 6 years.

Toilet vanity The mirror cabinet doors are designed to be longer than the internal wood cabinet. Toothbrush holders and other things can be mounted on the wall and will be hidden by the closed mirror doors. mbr vanity 1 by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr mbr vanity (2) by Harriette_Tan, on Flickr I came up with the initial idea.
