hihi ... the sight is becos of many mentality such as " I see you light incense and pray heaven (tian gong) , I also follow" , as a result, everyone follows the way. Such people who innocently lights incense to pray to tian gong are not evil people but only not aware of the practise and traditions of Buddhism. Nobody can be blamed. This is why, we should correct our wrong cocepts and wrong ways and start worshipping the corect way as well as start learning and understanding Buddhism, afterall its yr own faith ! =)

something to add on: Question: Is Feng Shui related to Buddhism? No. Feng Shui has no Buddhist background. Some "Feng Shui masters" claim to have learnt Feng Shui from a Buddhist monk. This is not creditable. A real Buddhist is prohibited to practice Feng Shui and all kinds of fortune telling. Feng Shui is an unconventional science that has theoretical results supported by unverified statistical data. The task of Feng Shui students in the future is to integrate Feng Shui into conventional science. To claim that there is a more powerful transcendental part of Feng Shui is nothing more than deceitful marketing.

"To reside in a suitable locality, to have performed meritorious actions in the past, and to set oneself in the right direction — this is the highest blessing." (from the Mangala Sutta, Discourse of Blessings by the Buddha ) III Congenial place to dwell, In the past merits making, One's self directed well: This, the Highest Blessing. Stanza III: "Congenial place to dwell..." Pa.tiruupa-desa-vaaso means "residence in a suitable and pleasant locality." For life to be pleasant, the dwelling place must be comfortable, secure in construction, tidy and clean in appearance, properly maintained, and besides it is helpful if it is in a good neighborhood and inhabited by agreeable people. The commentators amplify the meaning by explaining that a suitable locality should have in it people who practice the Noble Dhamma, the evidence of this being the existence of shrines, monks and monasteries and many good people engaged in meritorious deeds. Residence in a place inhabited by quarrelsome and trouble-making citizens, where one is bossed about by a dictatorial and corrupt government, where the climate is inimical with frequent ravages by floods, famines, earthquakes and epidemics, where the air is charged with hatred and mutual suspicion, and where freedom of thought and action are reduced to a minimum: in brief, residence in a place having many factors and conditions obstructive to the practice of Dhamma and not conducive to physical, moral and spiritual well-being, is just the opposite of what is meant by a suitable environment. When selection of a place for residence is considered, a Buddhist bears in mind the advantage of being near a source of Dhamma, besides, of course, more mundane advantages such as nearness to his work place.

Kopikao .. wow . thanks for the check =) this will enlighten our Christian n Catholic readers here who may opt for FSM. Buddhism equally do not encourage Buddhists to dabble in fengshui, since Buddhists believe in the Grace and Merits of the Buddha, the effects of Karma and own self efforts. Again, I must mention.. Fengshui should not trespass into the Buddhist grounds, meddling with the placement of Buddhist altars or icons and should not bound buddhists to the areana of consulting for time n dates.

Air, Guan Yin Pusa (Avalokitesvra Boddhisattva) is a Buddhist figure which the Buddha introduced to the world. The 25th Chapter of Universal Door of the Lotus Sutra is dedicated to Guan Yin who made 12 vows to respond to worldy prayers. Even though, Guan Yin as a Buddhist icon, it is very often to see taoist praying to this icon in taoist temples, as well as the worser ones falls into a trance claiming to be Guan Yin, resulting in medium consultations, talisman, restrictions on the posture of Guan Yin statues at home etc etc etc .. If you have a special affinty with Guan Yin, you should honour this Boddhisattva (Pusa) in the correct tradition, which is the BUddhist way since he belongs to the Buddhist Faith. How to define if u r a Buddhist externally on thr basic? 1. Buddhists do not pray to Tian Gong, Tudi Gong and deities 2. Buddhists do not burn josspapers 3. Buddhists are not encouraged to mix taoist practises n beleifs into Buddhism. 4. Buddhists do not have special restrictions on placement of altars and buddha statues. 5. Buddhists do not require fengshui or date/ time consultations for the altar. 6. Buddhists need not practise chinese-taoist-fengshui customaries To be a true buddhist, even not a religious one, you should at least bear faith in the Buddha and Boddhisattvas, honour and respect them with the most sincere heart. Try to understand the Buddha's advise and abide to it in setting a family n living daily with people ard us. There is no "serious" Buddhists ... u r a buddhist, then u r one .. it;s just defining yr faith and knowing yr own faith. U need not participate in temple events every sunday to call yrself a Buddhist. So afterall, u got to work it out .. Anymore questions ... welcomed !

Nowhere wrong in the house ... something just went wrong with his heart .... =) The world is full of temptations ...when one cannot resists temptations, we cannot push it to external factors ... try puting more fengshui oramanents in supposed positions in the house or hiding all the mirrors in the house and expose yr hubby to a pretty naked woman infront of him everyday ... I would recommend yr friend to go for marriage counselling or sit down with her husband to have a heart to heart talk ...

paying to believe in something that will only help u 33.3 ? hehe ... Heaven plus man = 66.6 which is more than enuff for a successful life. In Buddhist's view, 100 percent depends of our own's effort, its all about skillfulness, wisdom, understanding and effort that leads one to success. The greatest magic is ourselves.

Jin Gang Jing or commonly known as the Diamond Sutra ( Vajracchedika-prajna paramita sutra) can be obtained as a free publication is almost all major Buddhist temples. no need money. However, pls do not treat the sutra as a magical object or fengshui oranaments, you should recite it and recollect the teachings and meditate upon it as to benefit and be applied to your daily life. The chinese title u will see is 金刚般若波罗密度经 。。。a important sutra of the Prajna Section 般若部 of the Buddhist Tipitaka Canon expounding on Panna 智慧 & Sunyata 空性。 The sutra is is divided into 32 assemblies 三十二会 from convoncation to the conclusion, by the venerable arahat Subuti. 须菩提尊者。 Sharing a passage from the Diamond Sutra, 6th Assembly of the Merits of True Faith Subhūti addressed the Buddha, saying: "World Honored One, will there be sentient beings who are able, upon hearing these words and sentences, to give rise to true faith?" The Buddha said to Subhūti, "Do not even say such a thing. Five hundred lifetimes after my passing away, there will be those who observe moral discipline and cultivate merit, who will be able to give rise to the mental state of faith and take these words to be the truth. You should know that these people have not merely cultivated virtuous roots with one buddha, two buddhas, three, four, or five buddhas. They have cultivated all kinds of virtuous roots with countless hundreds of thousands of buddhas. Hearing these passages, in a single moment they give rise to pure faith. Subhūti, the Tathāgata fully knows and fully sees these sentient beings as they attain these countless merits." Why is this? It is because these sentient beings do not again [abide in] the notions of self, person, sentient being, or life span. Nor do they abide in the notions of the dharma, or the notions of non-dharma. Why? If these sentient beings their minds grasp to these notions, then they will cling to self, person, sentient being, and life-span. If they grasp to the notions of phenomena, they will attach to self, person, sentient being, and life span. Why? If they grasp to the denial of phenomena, then they will attach to self, person, sentient being, and life span. Therefore one should not grasp to phenomena, and one should not deny phenomena. Expressing this, the Tathāgata always teaches: 'Monks, understand my correct teachings to be like a raft.' If even my correct teachings are to be abandoned, how much more incorrect teachings? http://www.hm.tyg.jp/~acmuller/bud-canon/diamond_sutra.html#div-1 Visit here for more understanding about the dIamond sutra

Come on .. religion thing canot everything talk about money ... myi, why not ? BUT the main thing is that you must feel good and ease placing it there =) if need further advise, always free here for u ... msg me .. -

Yeah .. Tien ... u should do that ... afterall, it's yr profession of Faith .. take it as a chance for u to get closer to the Church and God =) To abide the church or not , it's all up to you ... In reply to people who believes that placing mirrors in rooms or watever oranaments in the room will enhance the relationship btw (eg: husband n wife) ... I intro u the Buddha's little "fengshui" booklet ... no need money, no need emply FSM, FOC. Five Kinds of Duty for a Husband 1) A husband must be kind to and adore his wife 2) He must not treat his wife in an insolent manner. 3) He must not engage in sexual misconduct with other women. 4) He must give her control and authority over domestic matter. 5) He must provide his wife with garments and ornaments. Five Kinds of Duty for a Wife 1) A wife must arrange chores of the household well and run it smoothly. 2) She must distribute gifts fairly between her relatives and her husband's relatives. 3) She must not engage in sexual misconduct wife other men. 4) She must keep and maintain all things orderly that are handed over by her husband. 5) She must be skillful and diligent in all her house works. To further enhance the family relationship if child is present, use the following guide: The Five Kinds of Family Duty for Sons and Daughters 1) Sons and daughters must attend caringly to their parents so as to provide them with all the requisites in life. 2) They must carry out the family affairs, such as the business matters of their parents. 3) They must maintain their parents' properties, their parents' clan name, their parents' religious duties, to try and straighten their parents' religious view if they have a wrong view. They must also maintain the good name of their parents and their lineage. 4) They must obey their parents and make themselves worthy of the parents' heritage. 5) On their parents' death they should do good deeds in dedication to them and share the merits with them. Five Kinds of Family Duty for Parents 1) Parents must prevent their sons and daughters from misconduct. 2) They must show their sons and daughters the way to good conduct. 3) They must make their sons and daughters learn the arts and sciences. 4) They must give them in marriage to suitable persons. 5) They must give them their inheritance at the proper time. (from the Singalovada Sutta) So, if were to think by putting mirrors will enhance the relationship or by abiding such guidelines will enhance so ? Mirrors n positions are not wonders ... Something so powerful within us is Faith, Joy and Love ... and these 3 factors alone well "positioned" in a home is enuff for a lasting relationship. Most importantly, FOC !! all no need money, no need worries ... Homage to Lord Buddha !

Tien tien ... as i said, the best is for u to seek advice from priest and the church ... Follow yr beliefs and faiths NOT non-beliver's suggestions. I am not sure for the Catholic faith if it involves throwing pinapples or not but defintely NOT a Buddhist practise. It' too much of supersitions for Buddhist to adopt such practises. True Buddhists do not mix fengshui with Buddhism, no need to cross over fire stove ... everything also no need. As Buddhists, we believe by the Power n Merits of the Triple Gems (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha) itself is enough. Be open minded and being Rojak is very different .. why dun u wanna seek yr Church's cleric advise ?? I believe any catholic church in any part of Singapore will be more than happy to answer yr questions ....

Hi, Not so true, it all depends on personal preference. In Buddhism, there is no rule as to being touching floor or suspended and no restrictions on the posture of the statue (standing or sitting) . The most important part is that you and yr family must feel good and allright with it and also that it can blend with your theme and design. No point suspending the altar in the air and at the end yr family do not feel at ease for the rest of the stay in the hose right ? hehe.. similarly, no point putting it down to the ground if yr family does not like it and u have to bear with an "eye obstructing" altar for the rest of yr life. The concept of an altar touching the ground does not arise from Buddhism, its bascially a fengshui, taoist practise. Although Guan Yin Pusa (Avalokitesvra Boddhisattva) being largely respected and worshipped by alot of people, many do not know the correct way to honour this boddhisattva becos it has always been blurred up with Taoist practises. My basic point here is that your family should feel right and happy with the altar down to the ground, then everything is ok. The rule, do it right once and for all ... =) pls also note, DO NOT send a Buddhist statue to be dotted in red, only for taoist statues. Buddhists also need not pray to "Tian Gong" and "Tu ti gong" nor burn josspapers. Its also important to establish the right defination of yr faith so that you will not inherit the wrong practises n concepts from the older generations who mixes buddhism and taoism together. 420 is definetly a reasonable price for a nice altar like yours .. most importantly, your heart counts ! Blessings for u ... -
HI tien tien, you SHOULD NOT dabble in fengshui and always adhere in the Catholic Church. Always seek priest's advise and not what people here says insisting you to go aganist yr own faith. Always seek own religious clerics for advise and do not downturn to fengshui as a Catholic even though catholics are more tolerant by nature. There is no generic prayer for Catholic to "heng heng" and there is no earth god in the catholic concept and thus no "dong tu" .. my few cents worth of understanding since my gf is a catholic.

freethinker ? haha ... If one can think free, is there still a need to rely on fengshui ? cannot expect a freethinker to start taking incense and pray in the house right ? well, of cos u can say freethinkers are free to think, free to believe in anything .. it depends which point are you coming from ... Freethinkers should have the faith in oneself not external powers from fengshui, God or Buddha .. as of whether a freethinker wanna practise fengshui or not , its all up to the indiviual. Cheerios .. Homage to Lord Buddha !
