  1. Are you able to post pictures of your current switch and the new switch? Not clear how you made your connections.
  2. Hi, 1. Turn off the circuit breaker and off the light switch. 2. Check with test lamp to confirm there is no power. 3. Connect the 2 yellow wires to the brown wire. If you cannot push in the 2 yellow wires, use another connector. 4. Connect the 2 black wires to the blue wire. 5. The yellow green wires should connect to the metallic frame or housing of the lamp. 6. Turn on circuit breaker. 7. Turn on light switch. Disclaimer: Engage electrician if you are not sure.

  4. The bunch of wires on the left looks more like they are for a power socket. Anyway, I mock up a quick set up to show how the wires are connected in a two way switch. This is one way of connecting and is not the only way. In a 2 way switch, there are 3 terminals. The centre terminal is usually the common or C terminal. The brown live wire on the left connects to the common terminal. The 2 yellow wires connect in between the 2 way switches. The yellow wires are called strappers. Another wire, the red wire, connects the lamp to the 2 way switch on the right. Finally, the blue neutral wire completes the circuit. Depending on the switch position, one of the 2 yellow wires will be connected to the brown live wire. When one yellow is live, the other yellow will be open. The closer the 2 yellow wires are and the longer the 2 yellow wires are, the greater the stray voltage.
  5. Interesting observation. However, the first video shows the flickering without powering on the plastic bag light. (The whole scene is dark). If the flickering only occurs with powering the plastic bag light, then there are two things to look at: 1. The proximity of the strapper wires, including the ones from the plastic bag light. This might be difficult for you to trace since you have more than 1 set of strappers and if the wires are concealed. 2. The plastic bag light and the track lights share a common neutral. Could you turn off breaker switch for plastic bag light and see if the track lights can be turned on? This is to determine if both sets of lights are on the same circuit or different circuit.
  6. From the description in the youtube video, there is indeed a possibility that stray voltage in the strapper wires cause the light to flicker. Strapper wires are the two wires between the 2 way switches. Do you know if the strapper wires are individual single conductor or the strapper wires are bounded together (flat twin)? If they are bounded together, it makes it worse. If they are not bounded together, one way to conclusively prove that it is/is not stray voltage is by separating the 2 strapper wires. You can do this temporarily by opening up the trunking/casing and separate them. However, please switch off the circuit breaker first. By separate, I mean do not let the two strapped wires come close to each other. Separate them as far as possible. Also, for this to be conclusive, there must be no other phase (live) wire next to the strapper wires or the wire connected to the light.
  7. I have an old copy of the cp5 standard. It does not state a minimum distance, rather it says something like " A socket outlet should be installed as far away as practicable from water tap, gas tap or cooker in order to avoid danger. " Some other standards like IEC give a guideline of 300mm or more. The ideal distance is 1m though in Singapore, 1m seems more like a luxury. Personally, I find 300mm to be a bit too close as the oil splashes from the cooker then to spill onto the appliances.
  8. From the picture shown, my guess is that you have to unscrew the round cover just below the ceiling. That will probably show all the mounting screws to the ceiling and the wiring connections to the fixture. If you are trying to remove the casing for the bulb holders, unless you can see screws, it could be glued or snap fit, making removal a hit or miss affair. You could also try to turn the vertical bars or round plate to see if they move. Whatever you do, do ensure to switch off the circuit breaker to this circuit or turn off all breakers.
  9. The flickering and cracking sound is probably due to poor/loose connection which is causing arcing. Did you notice which bulb or bulbs were flickering or it occurs randomly to all the bulbs? What is the wattage rating of each of the bulb? Does the switch control only this light or the switch controls more than one light. Do you use any dimmers for this light? Whatever you do, please be careful not to touch any metal part of the fixture.

Besides the screw boss cracking and breaking, which is a big problem, if the switches/sockets are concealed, then there is a high chance that the old paint will flake off or leave a line when the old faceplate is removed. If the faceplate is of a different brand/size, that previous paint line will be visible.
  15. The other kind is an electronic switch. Suppose you have 2 lights; it toggles between off, one light on and both lights on. It is not actually a 2 way switch, though it can act like one. More common is 1 or multiple lights controlled by 2 or more physical switches. You are better off with the physical type; i.e. two physical 2 way switches. You can have 3 or more if you want. Very reliable. There are two different ways of wiring physical 2 way switches but the net effect is the same. Two way switches are such a convenience especially if you don't have to get out of bed and fumble in the dark to on/off the room or toilet light.
  16. Apart from the timing and personal issues, there are 2 physical issues you described. One of them is alignment and this can be done very easily. A lot of them would simply tap the cover plate to get it to align. The other problem is not clearly described; one of the the twin sockets was incomplete. Regardless, both issues seemed trivial so best is to try and continue to work it out with contractor since he has emailed you to settle everything within a week. Focus on the issues and perhaps agree on payment upon completion on the spot. It's just not worth your time and energy to drag this out and neither is it productive for the other party though he might be indifferent. In singapore, we were brought up to have high standards in terms of commitment and punctuality but when it comes to most contracting, somehow, a lot of our expectations fall short. Quality of work is the other issue most people face.
  17. No there is no requirement to use double insulated. Do make sure the heater point is a dedicated point for heater. As to whether you can use above 3kw, you know the official answer from HDB. A 3.6kw will run at about 16A which is slightly above the 15A spec by HDB. I don't know the performance difference between 3.6kw and 3kw but a 3kw will save you quite a bit of electricity dollars in the long run. There are people who like their heaters to be very hot (even though singapore is very hot) so in that case, I'm not sure if 3kw is sufficient.

  19. Are you able to post pictures of the lamp holder and if possible, open up the unit to take a look at the inside? It may be possible to just use a lamp with built in driver.
  20. Keep us posted By the way, please play safe and be safe. Turn off the light circuit breaker and on/off switch when you remove the tubes. Avoid touching any metal parts with your bare hands and wear a pair of thick rubber slippers. Another question I have if you don't mind is, does this problem happen the minute you turn on the switch or it happens after a certain amount of time? I presume only the light MCB and main RCCB (the one with a button) trip and no other MCB trips. Correct me if I am wrong.
