  1. I had cement screed with epoxy for the walls at the dining area and upper section of the walls above the kitchen cabinets , and the passage way outside the enlarged bathroom leading to the utility room at my open-concept walkup apartment before. I remember telling my ID/friend that my budget runs out at the enlarged bathroom with a separate shower area and a long bathtub, She chose to use cement screed for the passage way to the utility room and the utility room's floor. Love the results. The hairlibe cracks at my old apartnent are not noticeable besides a hairline crack at the utility room area. I am fine with hairline cracks and I does minimal cooking so the oil spill at the upper section of the half height kitchen cabinet is kept to a minimum. The epoxy was a little intimidating initially but I love how the colors evolved over the years.
  2. nice cement screed you have and another well-executed project by Mr K! I am not against replicas if it is well made but chances are they will cost a premium too
  3. Hi Art, Can you help me ask Mr K when you next see him? My hands are still itchy even though I just moved in 5 mths ago
  4. I like the water pipes and the framed vintage papers ! Wow your ID really goes extra miles in this (small) reno project! I
  5. congratulations! I like cement screed effect but the one you showed looks a little too messy for my liking Feast your eyes with more inspiration cement screed floorings/walls and show those that you like to Mr K? And hope to see other more interesting choices for chairs besides the replicas of the eames chair
  6. I used 2 15W energy saving bulbs fort the 2M tracks at the dinning, living and master bedroom, and 2 LED bulbs for the 1M track at the kitchen. The lighting shop guy insisted that I need three bulbs for the living area even after I raised my concerns that it might be too bright. Took down one bulb after two weeks...
  7. Hi Hi Congratulations to another happy Mr K's customer! I just read your blog and saw the photos of your hacked wall and laying of cement screed over existing wall tiles you posted and begining to wonder why my contractor chose to do differently at a higher cost? I did a fair bit of hacking to my flat, including hacking away part of the master bedroom wall next to the entrance to create a double-door entrance. I see that your contractor hacked away the part of the walls for the glass divider without hacking away the wall above it while my contractor insisted that it will not be stable and that part has to be hacked away and reconstructed. I wonder why the different school of thought? My contractor also insisted that the cement screed will not stick well on existibg tiles and if I choose to overlay cement screed over existing tiles there will be no warranty for the work done. Mr K doesnt seem to have this concern? I retained the existing kitchen wall tiles and aborted the idea of using cement screed for the wall at the dining area in the end to save cost. And lastly please compliment Mr K for his nice drawings and handwriting!
  8. I been to shanghai a dozen time for work but my last visit was 8 years ago so lost touch liao spent a month staying at my shanghainese colleague apartment. I wonder if the 雪菜包near her MIL place still taste as yummy and if I dare to eat now. My friend is a savvy shopper and a good bargainer, I will leave the bargaining to her. err for the cam I hope I dont end up buying a cheong one leh http://detail.etao.com/17658915408.htm?'> http://detail.etao.com/17658915408.htm?
  9. Hi hi Thanks for the tips! I will be there for 6 days, tagging along my ex colleague who is going there for a business trip. Just asked her to check with her colleagues in Shanghai if it can be bought from the shop for the price listed on tb, or if they can help me to order from tb. My friend just purchased a five room resale flat and I have been poisoning her with links from rt. Now she is keen to explore buying from tb and amazon, and we will have fun doing our research and shopping while there besides meeting up with our friends! I will bring along a 85x45cm sofa cushion cover to source for fabric and hopefully get it custom make while there (shanghai is well known for tailoring job), or my friend can help me bring back during her next visit.
  10. Yes i know! I am guessing you bought the white MALM chest of drawers during sales for the hack? The smaller but almost half the price RAST is a good choice for DIY project too, and its made in solid pine:http://www.ikeahackers.net/2013/03/shabby-chic-rast.html Saw it while I bought the TARVA for my handyman to help me turn into this: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2013/04/artav-by-atelier-45.html
  11. hey some ideas for your study table! http://www.ikeahackers.net/2013/06/old-book-table.html
  12. Hi Ong, I am going to Shanghai next week and thinking I might check out the cams while there coz the Foxcam F18910W was selling at $125 at the PC show and the prices I saw on taobao for this model is about 400 rmb. But goodness, I just spent a good 30 minutes trying to find out the shops in Shanghai that carry this product without success. Guess I should just hit the IT Malls in Shanghai?
  13. Thanks MrMerry! Willv give it a try this weekend
  14. Morning! I am looking for a web-based home security camera. Any good lobangs on amazon (or taobao?) to recommend? If it's from amazon preferably it comes with free global shopping
  15. two commonly used words on RT: Poison and Drool lol The amazon shopping thread is poison indeed but it seemed very complicated to figure out which products are eligible for the free gloabal shopping. Gg To spend one fine day to try ordering the monster cable management kit and a yoga mat. And maybe a panini griller since I already have a giant transformer! Bought a Bodium coffee grinder for sgd30 two years ago while Tangs was retailing at about sgd100.
  16. dont rush into getting a towel rack or toilet paper holder which doesnt quite match Miss Perfectionist expectation :-) How about DIY one using wood or other material? I have seen an apartment in spain using the wall mount white metal shelf from IKEA's ?garden furniture section (IKEA alexsandra has it at the showroom on the second floor on the left near the escalator entrance together with a few rattan chairs and potted plants) outside the bathroom to hang towels. I quite like it and was considering thr same but settled for the LEKSVIK rack with hooks in white in the end. http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/80181450/ http://www.google.com.sg/search?q=wooden+towel+rack&client=tablet-android-samsung&hl=en-GB&source=android-browser-suggest&v=141338691&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=XUm-UZbZAYiBrgeUvYC4BQ&ved=0CEIQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=800 your "great wall of china" is looking good. lucky you didnt go for a darker tone laminate as suggested by your ID! Show pics of the interior leh :-)
  17. Hey June did you try out the tungsten bulbs at njght? I am using tnungsten bulbs for my bar counter lights. find it a little glaring from many angles. Will try out with the glass cover on when I find a shorter tungsten bulb.
  18. haha its a blessing in disguise then! I am drooling over your vintage french paper scrolls, especially the one with Effiel Tower! But I am holding my horses haha. Still searching for my dream yoga posters and thinking if I shoud gef a girl with ballon painted/pasted on the wall.
  19. Hi June I thought of using a plywood or a product from IKEA like the plastic bag holder to hide the cables before, but think its sufficent with the Monster cable management system I saw on Amazon. I can close one eyes to the mess behind the shelf This was the door that got me drooling for months, I even contacted two suppliers in America asking for the cost of the sliding door mechanism and gave up in the end as I wasnt sure if I can find a carpenter to customise the door and install it http://www.housetweaking.com/2011/02/10/diy-sliding-barn-door-part-i/ think it fits your rustic theme as well?
  20. haha I dont have much cushions on my butt but I find sitting on the floor very comfy! Guess yoga helps I cant do long sitted meditation though because my mind will start wondering away! And ended up stepping into a longkang while doing a walking meditation in india because my knees tensed up after trying to stay focus on the breathing and every step I made (not supposed to admire the scenery around you during the walk)Nope I didnt bid for the number plate. Requested the car agent to keep the car plate after I sent my car to the scrapyard.
  21. Aiyo I had a number of issues with the products I ordered from them (posted my experiences on retch's blog page 14) . The delivery guy had to make three trips to my place due to qualiry issues. Just remembered the same delivery guy didnt bring up the Vinkel bedframe during his second visit due to discoloration at the headboard coz he knew I will reject. I give them 100%, for their after sales service thoigh.
  22. Thanks mac. I saved a fortune on furnishing my current flat by mixing some of my old furnitures/paintings/posters/wine holder/balcony wall lamp with my new purchases. I exchanged the TV console with a small mirror and this bench from Scanteak's new Prologue series: fell in live with it the moment I saw it and the more pricey bench with two-way swivel backrest. Bought this instead of the one with backrest coz I didnt like the small gold screw they used :-) and I think it might need some fine tuning to make it more durable. I am not doing the bench justice by hiding it in my bedroom in between the vintage wardrobe and the custom made half height wardrobe, was planning to place it at the balcony but my balcony gets a lot of direct sunlight in the morning till midday. 会心痛 :-)
  23. If the button fell off from a shirt I bought from cotton-on, H&M, Mango I wont make a fuss, but if I pay a premium for the shirt from a more upmarket shop I will make sure my concern is being addressed As I told my main contractor renovation can be quite a tiring process,. I will be very bo-eng if I have to take care of all the small fixes myself Oh I ordered a TV console similar to yours before I started on reno, but I changed my mind and used back the 10 year old bookshelf/display shelf-turned-TV console (get the shop to chop off the legs) as it matches my old dining table and mirror better. The height is not ideal for watching TV from sitting on the floor but it is perfect for watching on the sofa, dining area and from my bed Need more books/magazines and a cable tidy kit to tidy up the mess behind the shelf :-)
