  1. Thanks yoongf & Mace for the replies! I bought Silicon Sealant at your advice since I do want it to stick and I don't need to paint over it. As for the sealant they used previously, it was in a tube form just like my silicon sealant, squeezed in with a gun, I started this thread to check because I was afraid I might get the same wrong one. The light grey part is the toilet tiles, the dark grey is kitchen tiles. The door frame is bluish white, my sealant is done in between the frame and the kitchen tiles, not very neatly done, can see the "fibres" But much nicer than what it was before.
  2. I've been looking for this thread! I thought I posted it in another forum. Couldn't find it, didn't realise I post it under Ceiling Works instead of General Reno .. Ok, there are a few outstanding issues from my renovation still, holes here and there waiting to be patched up and other unsatisfactories. Called my ID the other time to tell her about all these a few weeks ago, she said will send someone to check it out, will arrange with me again. I've not heard from her ever since ...... There's still 5% outstanding payment from my side as well, I think they would rather forgo that than to complete the job? So I have to DIY?
  3. Is the brand of your toilet bowl "OTTO" by any chance? It could be the manufacturer's fault. I had the exact same issue as you a few months ago! There was always water behind at the base of my toilet bowl. At first, I thought it was the outlet water from the aircon since the pipes are at the same area, so I didn't on my aircon for a few days. The leaking still persisted. It may be a small leak, but I just moved in not too long ago, quite ridiculous to have a leak. The only consolation was that there wasn't any smell, so I concluded that the leak should be clean water from the tank itself rather than the base below. I was quite sure the ID/plumber will insist that it's the aircon water, so I bought the toilet blue thing. True enough, the water leakage was blue too. I emailed the photos to my ID and I called the shop who sold me the toilet bowl at the same time. But I can't remember the events back then, ended up it was the shop who send their own guys to rectify my problem and not my ID! I always recommend people to that shop after that. =) They came for a check, the first thing they saw was the aircon outlet pipes and they decided that it's the aircon water. I expected that, so I zip them up with the blue stains from the toilet blue. They tore out the whole bowl, quite a simple process, just chisel off the white paste from the base of the toilet bowl and the whole thing can be removed. Toilet Blue was very helpful, it showed the stretch of leak, (please refer to picture), the water did not emerge from the base, but it trickled down from the top down to the base! They turned the whole thing over and they found the leakage source, which is actually a manufacturer's fault, a small crack there, sealed it up with putty and reinstalled my toilet bowl. At the same time, they told me some internal parts of the cistern were wrongly installed, the flush won't be strong. They rectified that as well together with the toilet bowl in the kitchen toilet. I was expecting to be slapped with a bill for all that trouble, but they left without asking for $$$. I called the shop, and he said it's part of the warranty. So impressed! End of story ... So if you can, take some shots behind the bowl and see if you have the same problems? It might be similar issues. HTH..
  4. My mum has expressed her irritation about this stretch of sealant adjoining the bifold door and the tiles at the toilet entrance for the longest time. It's "soggy" and collapsing as she tried to brush the dirt and grime off the sealant surface with a toothbrush. I finally had time to take a serious look at it yesterday, it's not firm to the touch like solidified sealant, but it's moist and falling apart. I used a screwdriver to poke it, and it went right through! I dug further and managed to dig out a section effortlessly, it's a whole mess of whitey fluid with clumps of clay like material. Seems that it hasn't cured after so many months! I had no idea what type of sealant they used, but it just didn't solidify after so long. I decided to dig out the whole disgusting stretch and DIY. I was at the shop yesterday and I saw a few types of sealant, but there are the 2 more common types. Acrylic Sealant and Silicon Sealant, the description on it doesn't quite explain which is for what purpose. Anyone got any idea? I want something that will cure and solidify, preferable mold/mildew free as well, the unknown one last one used by my ID was a total wreck.
  5. Living room TV console, laminates Kitchen not suspended, but resting on tiles, it should be exposed wood.
  6. Hihi, if you have a price list of the things they do, it would even be better? Like how much for a lighting point, SCV point, Tel point, etc etc.
  7. Hihi. Yes, it's google sketchup. Quite easy to use among all the 3D softwares that I've tried before (I was a media arts student)
  8. This rather. I did a quick illustration. Top cabinets - 1/2 the depth of bottom cabinets in row 1 Top cabinets - same depth as bottom cabinets in row 2. patsy.sg has a point with regards to higher ceiling, it's actually ok if it's not at your head/face level, so long it doesn't obstruction your view or whatever you are doing at the table top (cooking/washing/eating), it's fine, can't imagine hitting your head against it everytime you look up ... (of course also depends on your height. )
  9. Gosh, you meant the depth of the top cabinets? Is that the FIRST time that they are making kitchen cabinets for crying out loud??? I'm quite disgusted by all the lousy excuses they can come up with to cover their mistakes. Common sense, top cabinets is 1/2 the depth of bottom cabinets, so that you won't knock your head against them when you stand close to it. There MIGHT be people who requested for same depth top/bottom, and that would be an exception. Since you didn't ask for it, they should jolly well give you the norm instead of doing something else, force it down your throat, ask for replacement fee when you didn't want it. KEEP the last 10%!! It's only paid when you are totally satisfied with everything. Or else they can rectify the unsatisfactories and earn the last 10%! Goodness....
  10. I'm not too sure about the difference between local/US set for Wii. For now, total sales figures since launch is highest for Wii (45%), followed by Xbox360 (32%), then PS3 (22%). xbox is actually on the low since it was out a year earlier than the other 2. But when it comes to deciding the right console for YOURSELF , it largely depends on what games you intend to play. Wii has several cutesy games, I was quite drawn to it when I had the chance to play at some chalet. But I'm still more into the indepth RPG games, so I would still get a PS3. Why not Xbox360? I need my dose of Final Fantasy, I had an xbox, and I missed FF10,11,12. Wow, very good analysis of the 3 consoles. I was secretly planning to get a Wii and you jolted me up. hahha. I probably enjoyed it because there were 4 of us playing back then at the party like you said. At home, I would probably be playing solitude games like stragetic/RPG. qisahn seems cheaper than funzsquare!

  12. A decent girl would see that as food. Does she go gaga with anything phallic? Should just stick to chicken wings, otah and something else.
  13. I think your contractor might have sold it with you thinking that it was disposed off ..
  14. I'm bad, I was half hoping that the box would give way and the oven cave in with someone standing on it. But hey, you will get to demand a new oven! Honestly, it's common sense. No amount of signage would help. And some people just don't have it. PS. I love that barb wire idea.
  15. Err, where is this better place that you are suggesting? I conscientiously arranged for all the items (hood, hob, lights, bulbs, sink, taps, toilet fixtures, accessories) to be delivered AFTER the major works were done, like hacking, ceiling works, wetworks, tiling and laminated flooring. Just left with door installation, painting and carpentry. Besides my own place where the items can readily be retrieved/accessed when they are needed for installation. I couldn't and still can't think of anywhere else apart from one of the empty rooms where no carpentry or unnecessary disturbance would normally occur. I've taken some effort to arrange them in a pile neatly so that they don't look like they are trash waiting to be thrown or something people with no business with should be prying into, even cordoned off the area with masking tape. Trust me, I would have locked that room if there were doors at that time. I've done the best I could possibly do to deliver the message, anything I missed out?
  16. They were using it as a stool or short ladder. It's ridiculous, I walked in one day to find my paper lantern in a brown bag in the middle of the room too. On top of it was paint and circle marks. It was a flatten delicate paper lantern wrapped in brown paper, they used it as "cushion" for their paint bucket to protect my laminated floor, don't they have some basic sense to look into the brown paper bag first before they use it as a ground sheet? I confronted him and he got the cheek to suggest that "I anyhow put". WTF?? Where in the house should I be hiding my things then? Everything was stacked in "my corner" together with lights, bulbs, toilet bowls, sinks & accessories. I gave him a good piece of mind and got him to replace/compensate me for that item. They were here for a paint job and they forgot their necessary tools, went to ransack my stuff, used my masking tape (I can forgive that) and then accuse me of "anyhow put??"
  17. I want to know too! I was given this ugly white plastic by default, I want to change it to the metal one too.
  18. Yes, keep food/leftover food/food to be thrown out of sight/scent. When they got nothing to eat here, they will go elsewhere.
  19. Ooops, you are right in a way. Tiles do look more grand for living/dining area, whereas the cosyness of laminates should preferably be reserved for rooms only. I was speaking from a child-less, pet-less point of view, it's easy to maintain if one have no intention to have kids/pets. Else will indeed be an issue when it comes to cleaning up spillage/pee.
  20. The ants are attracted by food, sweet stuff. So long you leave them in the open, ants will come to them ...
  21. Laminated flooring is quite hassle and maintenance free, just mop with water once every 2 days. I would love to have them in the whole house, but my parents prefer tiles in the living/dining room. If you have kids, have to keep an eye on them, so that they won't spill any drinks.. If they do, be sure to wipe it up asap. And you do save quite a lot by overlaying, without the hacking/disposal.
  22. The wider your shelf, the higher the chance of it warping, especially if it's full load, even with a row of fiction novels, it seems. I've seen some horror shelves at my friends place, the whole piece (W80) was sagging, and it's just a row of fiction novels. I think it has a weight limit on each shelf. Like what apple said, if you are using it to display things and just a few books here and there, then it should be ok. The weight is nicely distributed. I had them in my old house. I chose 2 narrow W40 instead of 1 W80. 4 of them covering the entire wall with the CD rack from the same range in the middle, have to secure them against the wall. It lasted for about 2 years and I moved .. so can't really tell you if it will last 10 years.
  23. Hah, I was caught in the same situation. Parents wants grills, I don't want them. Finally, windows facing corridor, comes with fixed grills, cannot be slided open, can't be helped since gotta prevent burglars from climbing in, mine's sliding windows. Their room, comes with grills that can be open, the rest of the house, no grillls. Without grills makes it more spacious and not to mention, grills are not cheap.

I didn't really have to bargain when buying from them, their prices are usually quite competitive, close to the cheapest I've got. (like $5 to $10). You can try to ask for more if you are getting a few items at the same time. There are a few other shops across the streets as well, check out the models you want, record the prices, then compare, get the ones that are cheaper or bargain down to the cheapest price you found?
  25. My reno was completed quite a few months ago, I just noticed recently that there's a crack at the joint of my ceiling works where 2 pieces of cornices meet at a right angle. The crack seems to be getting larger, will the whole piece fall off eventually if I just leave it? Or is that something I can do to patch it up myself?
