  1. Hi suikoden, Happy New Yr to you too! Waaah...why you change my name become like LGBT like that... Eeee.. Anyway, hmm in that case, yes I think $15k should be just about enough to cover carpentry. But if you're a young family that doesn't have too many things (junk like a thousand plates from the 1980s) like older families do, perhaps you can do very basic stuff for the first 5yrs of your marriage. Eg, instead of making cabinets with 20 doors, perhaps make cabinets with just 10 doors. Not only will this give your home a bigger feel, but also you won't be tempted to buy unnecessary things all the time because you're thinking "Oh I have the space to keep them if I don't need them..."(in the first place, why waste money to buy them if you don't need them?). A lot of us fall into that trap, myself included. Now, if we were to live in a 1-room apartment, we would think twice about buying unnecessary things because we have nowhere to keep...right? The money is better put to use in investments while we're still young, like Li Ka-Shing says Oh and...duno if it suits your taste, but I've posted pics of the IKEA countertop you may want to consider as a cheaper alternative haha. I think for people who don't cook much and don't have a lot of kitchen junk, it seems perfectly fine.. Haha, yes, yes you should bang and try out the IKEA things first before you buy! Especially bookshelf and those things that you put heavy stuff. Some of the stuff is really crap and/or overpriced and will sag or warp with time under the weight of those heavy things, but the rare few made of solid wood are good to buy!
  2. Ooops sorry, my mistake. The $200+ I was thinking of is actually this one: It's an island kind of table, very solid and a decent size but I guess not like a traditional kitchen cabinet size. But the actual one I meant for a decent kitchen counter is this at $492: If I recall correctly, it was about maybe 6-7feet long. If you get 2 of these, it would be quite long and look like a traditional countertop. I think la... heh. Not sure.
  3. Hi Hebronep, thanks.. Actually I agree, it's supposed to be very easy. I've watched videos on it and seems ok if I follow step by step. Mine are mostly 2-way though. But hmm... I guess I kinda want peace of mind knowing it's being done by someone who knows exactly what they're doing. I scared later I wire wrongly then kena electrocuted or something Also, there are 20+ so if I were to let somebody more expert do the job, it would be faster! LOL cos I think for me to do 20 would take 1 week... How about I pay you to help me do?
  4. But alamak...why you never post earlier. I was looking for these kind of places prior to doing my reno You might want to read my rant about this issue in my t-blog here lol: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/69575-chronicles-of-a-simple-bathroom-without-gold-taps/ Cheap =/= Good Good =/= Cheap Anyw hope u don't mind if I link your post on my t-blog..?
  5. Hi, I recall last time I came across a post here that someone said their electrician charged only $10 per point for changing such light switches n power sockets. I've bought 20plus for the house and want to change like 6 as soon as possible. Does anyone have any reliable contacts for this? Actually, I can do myself I think..but may be very slow. And not sure also if I will do it correctly. So please intro to me if you have frm your recent reno. Much appreciated!
  6. Hehe.. ok, do you mean a) $15k for all other things EXCEPT carpentry; or b) $15k for ALL things including carpentry? Huge difference wor... As you may already know, carpentry alone makes up a huge chunk of any renovation budget. A full everything is going to cost you over $10k liao. Assuming you need 5 main wardrobes/cabinets/console, that's already $7k. Then the small things like side cabinets la, shoe cabinet la, bathroom cabinet la, shelves etc maybe another $2k. And the killer item, i.e. kitchen cabinets from my surveys would cost $3-6k (indeed the standard deviation amongst companies is high! if you are lucky you can find the lower end...but if not, you may just end up with the median). So that leaves very little from your $15k budget to get furniture... Unless you don't mind buying those really entry-level stuff like from 42 or non-branded places. They are ok for a couple of years, but not for like 10yrs la. Anyway. Just a little tip on kitchen cabinet... I found that IKEA actually has very extremely affordable options if you're looking for just simple stuff. I'm not even talking about their customised cabinets and tabletops (never tried), but just those normal off the rack kind. I saw some serious quality wooden countertop tables for like $200+! And I know it's good quality because I have this silly habit of banging on the IKEA things when I'm looking at them. Like, banging hard with my fists. If it sounds hollow and feels flimsy, I move on until I find a solid one.. So there are some that really pass the banging test. Having said that, who am I to advise you on budget...! When I've just spent over $8k on one stupid toilet... Happy renovating!
  7. Really useful information you've shared... thanks!
  8. Oh and just to clarify... The shower set from the HK seller was a complete set of rain shower and handheld showerhead, but I had to spend another US$100 to get a Kohler handheld showerhead from a US seller to replace the one the HK seller sent because I wanted something more durable and trust-able. I am also going to be replacing their hose with a Kohler hose that costs about US$90 with shipping for that very same reason Well, if anything happens to my Kohler in the future (choy!), at least I have a spare on standby...
  9. Hmm.. shower head size I'm not sure leh. You mean the area (length x breadth)? Or the length? Heh. sorry... Cos usually showerhead measurements are diameters right, for round ones? I can help you check when I go back there, if you can clarify.. Cheers!
  10. Hi Tarzanboy, you're referring to the shower set right? I got it on Ebay...! It was a HK seller, and you can search something like 'spa shower' or something like that. There are many options. Mine was about $230++... I think prob can get it on TB also, if you want to go through the hassle.. Ebay is simpler for me, just pay and it will deliver straight away without having to arrange shipping with third parties
  11. To cheer myself up, I switched on my shower... Nice? Apparently this must be good for people during blackouts. Or people who like to shower in the dark
  12. Once again, super dumbasses from the People's Republic of La-la Land strike. So I had bought some privacy film (you know, for glass panels and doors) from a China seller. Each roll was just the right size for my use. So not only did I buy FOUR different rolls from FOUR DIFFERENT AUCTIONS, I had also sent specific instructions immediately to the seller telling them that I wanted my film in 4 rolls (but of course shipping would be combined). I had said: Hi I have bought FOUR (4) rolls of 2metres. Please ship to me in FOUR uncut rolls, NOT one single continuous piece of 8metres. Thanks. I had wanted the rolls pre-cut at the factory so that I would not have to cut them myself-- I didn't want shabbily cut pieces if I were to attempt them myself. But no. The mofos sent me one ridiculous roll of 8m that is not even usable. And the width is like milimetres off the alleged size so if I really wanted full coverage, I would have to cut them into small strips and horizontally stick a thousand of those strips on. WTF?!? Why are these people so stupid? Honestly, if I had wanted ONE continuous roll of 8metres, I would have just clicked Qty: 4 on ONE single auction! Why would I go through all that hassle of going to so many different auctions? Aaaargh! Seriously, after this reno, I am so DONE with buying anything from China online. DONE!
  13. One step forward, two steps back Instead of wrapping up my reno and enjoying the use of my awesome new toilet, some damage has been done to my tiles thanks to the installation of my shower screen. I am utterly heartbroken, but since 'nobody's to blame', I have to just suck it up. Man proposes, God disposes... sigh.
  14. I don't think have anymore this kind... You could go and fabricate from steel/ metalworks people. I think 1 would cost probably about $200-300 (based on my experience of buying metal sheets of 4x8ft recently). If you buy 3, can get slightly cheaper only. The market prices are quite standard for these metals. Don't need to use aluminium also can, can use zinc or other cheaper metals?
  15. Aaaand here you go, ladies and gentlemen: Don't you just love my lovely Pegasus vessel faucet...?
  16. Whoops, have been so busy with the remainder of the reno and other stuff. But it's pretty much done liao...! Just waiting for shower screen and door hehee... Here's a sneak preview: Black grout lines for worry-free long term maintenance..
  17. Hi hi...how much is your entrance light? Nice... Bright or not? Is it concentrated or diffused? I'm looking for something like that for my outside balcony and my roof garden...need a very strong light with wide coverage. And how much were your bunker lights?
  18. Lol thanks @Meow... My tiler also said the same thing! Haha.. He said I should do this as a job sinceI know so much and am so detailed, sure can earn a living one I'm open for bookings! Lol..
  19. Even though @sandyteow has only 1 post so far, the carpenter has a decent enough FB page that shows the pics of ongoing projects. And the Mr Tan who responded also seems ok, he invited us to come see the workshop at Sg Kadut if we want. He also sent pictures of the Excel soft-closing hinges that they use. I cannot comment on the quality yet because I haven't engaged them but if I do, then I will post pics and a review of their work
  20. I contacted the carpenters suggested by the above few posters. Wow, this Mr Aruvin so expensive. At $150, he is more than 100% than the D'Ark quotation at $60..! He use gold closing mechanism maybe
