  1. The reason why my wife and I were quite nervous about the colour was our choice of tile. Alot of ppl were saying black tiles will make house look smaller, will trap heat, reflective and feet print obvious. Decided to go ahead because we wanted something which was not white and all the grey tiles seem boring. Still no idea how it will turn up as the tilers just started today. On a side note, my contractor lost his tools and some cement chemical in my flat. Seems like alot of such cases in my area so have decided to get a cctv. Any recommendations?
  2. Chose this colour for my hall but was afraid it might make the hall too dark. So last sat I bought a tin and test paint on the wall. Seem abit dark but have decided to risk it.
  3. I want to gorge on blu ray movies. You guys purchase from amazon us or uk? Quite a number of movies boxes are going for 9+ pounds.
  4. Received my 1st amazon purchase for my HTS. Total amount came up to ard $130 sg for the wall mounts and 30m speaker 14 gauge wire. Could have bought them in sg but the amount would be abit higher plus I would lose the experience of buying from amazon which was inspired by fellow bloggers Kim and Ong. Now I can understand the excitment of opening the amazon box . Can't wait for my taobao purchase to come next week. Untitled
  5. I am getting my taps, downlights, ceiling lights, vanity top, coffeetable, carpet from taobao. I agree that its a gamble especially on the quality but quite alot of stuff sold in sg are from there. And the savings is quite large. Example, I saw the exact bathroom vanity top sold in taobao for 200+ being sold for 700 in a shop at boon lay. And the guy was selling the mirror and additional stuff separately. In my 2 bathrooms itself, I save at least 500 including shipping. Like ocean said, lookout for ratings and research properly before stepping in. Or worst case just buy the stuff forummers have bought and used. i will be receiving my 1st purchase next week. I will post the pic when its here.
  6. Mine is delayed. My vanity cabinets takes 2 weeks to manufacture before it can be shipped. I should have ordered earlier. Take note of this when ordering. I waited abit too long and because of this, my bathroom works can start only when the cabinet arrives.
  7. Nice and big bro. Alot of ppl doing these type of brick walls.
  8. I will agree with oceaneleven. This forum awesome at helping out and poisoning ppl. My purchase in taobao has ballooned from 1.5k to almost 4k. But the cost saving is ssubstantial.
  9. I would have tried the sofa and dining set if I had done earlier. Righy now, I'm packing lights, taps, vanity cabinets and taps in my first order. 2nd order is coffeetable chairs carpets and etc. You can try peeka or look in hwz forums. Got a few guys doing ordering. Mine is from there.
  10. I will cover 3 items. 1. Curtains- the only reason I'm even vaguely interested in curtains is because I hated my current house design of the rails and metal pins. Since my wife says she wants curtain poles, I got abit interested since I will have to put the curtains. The jb guy quote pf rm2k include day and night curtain of 70% for hall, then 3 day sets for the room including rail installation which I wun take. My poles are from taobao, cost about 200+. A shop in toa payoh told me 1k for whole house. 2. JB furniture- I went thru alot of forum and went jb to recce. The thing which made me uncomfortable was the full payment needed to be made before delivery. So my wife and I made our last round to tesco tebrau before giving on jb. Found one shop which had things at our price range, the salesgal was friendly and full payment is when items are delivered. My deposit is 500 for 5k worth of stuff. 3. Taobao- I use chrome browser which auto translate. I dun have a car and can't understand malay either. So I gambled on taobao which supported by many in the forum. I am gambling alot of the stuff which I read in various forums. Jb furniture, taobao electrical and plumbing stuff. Lets see how it turns out.
  11. The Singapore number is 86795379. The shop is at tebrau tesco 2nd level. Take note I have no idea how their workmanship is. Tell them you got the contact from indian couple at boon lay side. Ask for discount......and tell them to give me discount also. Their quote for curtain for whole house was rm2000. Will this be consider cheap?
  12. I purchased my furniture in jb and there is a curtain and wallpaper shop just beside. They come to sg for free quotation and installation on sunday. Got quoted 1k for whole house curtain and installation as well. Can't comment on the workmanship as nothing installed yet.
  13. Have ordered ard 1.3k worth of items from taobao and should be receiving them mid nov. Got another 900+ of items lined up to be ordered as well. Made a mistake when I bought a sink tap which might be too long at almost 70cm when installed. Forgot to check the dimensions when I ordered and its on the way already. But considering that most of my stuffs were ordered without knowing the dimensions, only this have been wrong and can't be exchanged. Anyone want to buy this? Think it cost ard 90 bucks.
  14. Quite a few happenings in the past few days. Got my gas heater installed but the $650 quoted for the water pipe installation still seems abit steep for me. Dropped by Soon Bee Huat to pick out my tiles. Shocked my father when I showed all the black tiles my wife and I picked up. Ignore the orange/gold and brown/gray tiles. Those have been rejected. Waiting for the contractor to get back on the price of the tiles.
  15. Once the downlight is spoilt, you should be able to just pull out the light, unclip the connector and put in the new one. That's what I'm planning on for my purchase but haven't received or installed yet. You can youtube to learn how to take out a downlight.
  16. Hi bro, you can list down ur reno needs and budget. From there you can get more feedback.

  18. I got my gas heater installation in the morning. Going balestier after that to recce again since its my off day. Hoping to settle this soon. Thanks.
  19. Went to select tiles at white horse ceramic. Chose 3 tiles for the hall in grayish tones but feel not satisfied with these. Any other shops to recommend?
  20. Ur home is fantatic bro. U should install a surround sound system for ur big hall.
  21. Hi Aska, I prefer not to give out the contact for now. The reason is my friend's contractor was quite slack in his response to my requests. Total received 4 quotations, except for the 1st once, the rest had either missing items or items not removed as requested. He basically lost the deal as I was ready to sign with him. As for my current contractor, I took a gamble on the vibes I got from her as well as the crowd in her small shop. Apart from that, I have no idea how the workmanship is or if the progress will be painless. Once the reno starts and I can judge the work, I will update accordingly. Trust me I am saving you the troubling of wasting time on recce for contractor. Cheers bro.
  22. Went for a joint inspection with hdb folks for the bomb shelter door on Wednesday. Latest update is they will be changing the door to a new one. Have alsp signed with the old couple contractor for renovation. Hope the fact that they have been in business for many years is for a reason. Unfortunately my reno can't start till the permit for my wall hacks is approved and floor tiles chosen. And my taobao shopping list of lights and vanity cabinets is expected to arrive only mid nov. For those using gas heaters, how much did ur plumber charge for fixing up the water connection? Mine seems quite ex at 650.
  23. More than 2 weeks since I have got the keys but nothing much have been done except buying almost every electronic and furniture for the house. Not much faults except for some broken levers and my badly dented bomb shelter door. Told them to change but end up the tried to hammer back into shape and paint over. Not good enuf so going complain to hdb. See the pic of their patchwork. Advice needed on wallpaper and curtains. Got quoted 380 for big roll of korean wallpaper enuf for my feature wall and dining wall. Is it reasonable or possible to get better price? Quoted 1000 for curtains for whole house, 3metre hall, day and night curtain plus 3 room cutains ard 2metres. No idea if the price is good. Pls advice. bomb shelter door dented
  24. A small update on the contractor selection. The Aunty's husband came down to take measurements. I was impressed by his free drawing and advice. Doesn't really give creative solutions but his experience can be seen. As long as his quote doesn't shock me, I should be taking him. [url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/105022834@N02/10206547843/]reno uncle free hand[/url Need the experienced folks advice, how long does it take to apply and get the permit for wall hacking? And also going to order in my taobao list soon. Wat is the max i have to wait? Most of my reno lights and vanity tops are going to be ordered from there. Thanks
