warping as in the tiles is not 100% even..the tiles will not be very even if you lay it like mine as the tiles are not 100% straight..ours is like staggered instead of aligning all tiles..it's not a problem if you lay it in straight aligned rows (like normal homogeneous tiles) as the 'not straight' will be aligned and look straight.. very difficult to explain! dun think i did a good job explaining, i think u can ask some IDs or contractors, they should be able to explain it better.. but anyway you have to be prepared that it might not be very even..we've seen a few tiles which obviously feel like one side is sunken..K will change that few for us, but he said that he has already warned us about it beforehand and it's inevitable when we use such tiles for indoors..we've already chose the shorter one (60cm) to minimise the problem..we're ok with most if it, but K mentioned that he can see that all isn't very even =_=" he said some of his customer has chosen 90cm tiles, and he's going to make him sign indemnity, as it's definitely not going to be even and he can't be hacking and changing so many tiles.. =p

We chose the same tiles for the whole house (except toilets) for a seamless look, hoping to create continuity and an illusion of space. Our kitchen is open-concept and we knocked down the walls between service yard and kitchen, and overlaid kitchen/service yard tiles. Tiles should be more durable and less problems than real wood flooring..but grout lines are inevitable although it can be brown to match your tiles..longer tiles are also not recommended due to warping issues (tiles are not totally straight).

hey we went to see again..it's indeed at different levels and K has said that he can either make a curb or make a slope to join both..we've chosen a slope for easy wheelchair access..it should look similar to my entrance i suppose.. thanks!

The ceiling looks good!! very unique and should be stunning when the lights come up.. if i did not finalize my reno details i would have done more research and added these lights as i like it bright..

warranty on the material, which is vinyl, a kind of plastic so definitely water resistant..it also feels solid without the hollow feel that laminates give.. i was warned that water may seep in between and cause smell/mould below which warranty does not cover (as material is not damaged). it is installed using a 'click' system which connects the pieces without sealing, so have to be careful of air-con leaks/forget to close windows/mop too wet/spilling water without cleaning it quickly as water may seep through in between.. some research has also found that it emits poisonous fumes in small amounts and isn't good for children especially..you can read up on it.. but the potential smell and mould turned me off..

the light is indeed beautiful..! i'm looking for smth similar..do u happen to rem the shop name or how much it costs?

helllooo! thanks thanks.. it did turn out better than expected, and brings out the scandinavian look very well..i think i got lucky with the furnishings..i started feeling worried if i'll achieve the look i envisioned since i've seen so many 'scandinavian' themed homes which deviated..i guess with that brick wall, flooring and major furniture i've bought, it should be okay now.. renovation is indeed a big-ticket item..but the satisfaction you get and comfort for years to come is worth it

Hello neighbor! *waves* it's an exciting and fun process to create your own home which both of you are comfortable with..magazines are great places for inspiration and makes it clearer which style (or styles) you really would like for you home. good luck for reno!

i'm in! my bench was from star living at furniture mall..130cm $299 and 165cm $399 (on sale)..it's the only one which we saw with those legs and should go pretty well with your dining table! grouting - clean with bleach, baking powder and water..i think it's like 1-1-1 (not very sure) and it's supposed to work very well according to some blogs i read..sadly i'm 'in-charge' of grout cleaning since i insisted on mosaic and tiled flooring, so i went to read up about it..

i think i'm very much influenced by the pictures i've seen (i love pinterest) and was bent on getting blond wooden flooring..i like how it makes the place look warm and welcoming..husband likes those white-wood flooring which is slightly grayish..it's also very scandinavian but it's a 'cold' color that makes the house less cosy..some scandinavian houses are too white and too impersonal/stylish, i don't really like it but husband likes it..it's a different feel but i like blond wooden flooring, white walls and colorful decor with pops of color everywhere..we compared both side by side and i managed to convince him! anyway, don't doubt yourself! only you know what you like best..just that if your husband has different taste, gotta compromise somewhere since the home belongs to both of you..husband prefers things simple, so some industrial elements i liked got vetoed against.. you are really taking your time! after all the reno shopping for tiles and household electronic items are settled, it's finally time to shop for decor stuff..!

Have been getting some questions about my flooring and why I chose homogeneous tiles instead of vinyl or other materials. Ended up choosing tiles as it it arguably the most durable, especially for future kids who will hit and push toys around the house. Choosing wood-like flooring for our home: We wanted wooden flooring for the whole house, including kitchen - that one we were sure. But what we weren't sure was what material to use. We've looked around and shortlisted quite a few: Laminates: Big no-no for me, because I dislike the way it feels when you step on it. It feels 'fake' and hollow, and it's not known to be durable too. Definitely not recommended for kitchen. I suppose the only reasons people choose it is due to its affordability and patterns available. Cost $2.50psf and up. Parquet wood: Not recommended for kitchen due to dampness/leaks, although overseas use it for kitchen and it's the top 5 materials to be used. My friend's place in US even had parquet wood in toilet, and have to be very careful when washing the bath-tub incase water spills out. Gave it up since everyone advised against it and we were concerned about the maintenance. Moreover, it's usually darker colored which would make our place look smaller. Cost $6psf and up. Bamboo: Supposed to be more durable and more resilient to water, but was also advised against using it for kitchen as hot oil would change its color. Expensive to lay it for whole house. Think it cost about $7psf and up. Vinyl: Also known as waterproof resilient flooring. It feels solid, looks like wood and is waterproof. I was amazed and totally sold - till I went to research on it. It's made of vinyl, basically plastic and installed using a 'floating' system as pieces are 'clicked' together. Warranty on the material, but salesman warned that it does not cover mould if water manage to go UNDER it. This is possible as the pieces are not sealed and if your mop is too wet/air con leak/forget to close windows, water can and will seep in between and potential cause mould or smell. Moreover, some studies stated that vinyl is 'poisonous' and emits poisonous fumes which is especially bad for children. Reviews overseas were pretty bad too. Smelly flooring doesn't sound appealing to me, so we gave it up. Cost $5.60psf and up. Homogeneous tiles: We knew about wood-like homogeneous tiles but I was concerned about the grouting or whether it could have the feel that I like. We went to quite a few places - White Horse, Hafary and Soon Bee Huat. We eventually chose our tiles from Soon Bee Huat for $2.60psf excluding laying. Hafary had a few nice ones to but prices start from $3.20. White horse had less options and generally didn't look as nice due to the grains. Soon Bee Huat had a huge selection, and the showroom has big areas which were laid with such tiles for easy visualization too. Really worth a visit for anyone choosing tiles!

Shopping. We went shopping at the furniture mall today, in hopes of finding the perfect bed and buying the sofa. This was the first thing I fell in love with - so cute! I'm so going to get one of these to hold my tissues. And the second thing I fell in love was this. It was really love at first sight. Everything was right. From the legs, to the dimensions, to the color and comfort. It totally goes with my theme. I went with the intention to choose my Wynn sofa fabric and order the sofa. But after seeing this, Wynn's sofa just looked...boring. It's just me, I've been looking for THE sofa but was resigned with getting something ordinary as I prefer something comfortable. While mid-century sofas are beautiful, they usually don't look comfortable to lounge in. In short, I bought it and forfeited my Wynn deposit. It was on promotion and only cost $990 with detachable covers. Even when I add my Wynn deposit as a cost, my sofa cost $1290 vs Wynn's $2380. Though I lost my $300 deposit, I still felt like I 'saved' $1,000. Anyone who wants to get Wynn's sofa and would like to buy over my deposit? I'm willing to let of my $300 go at half-price. The third thing I feel in love with today is this bench for my dining table. I've been looking for benches with such legs to go with my dining table, and almost took the plunge to custom-make one from Lorgans. This is less than half-price of what Lorgan's cost. 165cm for $399. By the way, this is my dining table. And this is my sideboard to be place opposite my brick wall and opposite my dining table. We've also bought a 46" Samsung Full HD-3D-Smart Tv (whatever that means) 6600 for $2499 at Courts promotion today. Free Samsung 7.0 Tab. The husband spent like 45 minutes talking to the sales guy about TV while I looked at every single thing in Courts. With this, we've bought almost 90% of the living room furniture and I'm really pleased because I love every single piece and think that it goes well with my theme. Affordable too!

Week 3 concluded It has been another productive week, and I suppose that most works should be completed by next week. We've finally got the permit to hack the walls between the kitchen and service yard and it's coming down next week! The house has become more messy these 2 days after flooring was up. House is partially covered with protection paper with materials for false ceiling around. The entrance. Slopped for easy wheelchair (and future pram) access. Guest room's flooring and skirting is done! MBR flooring and skirting also done. Living room has become a war zone yet again. Tilers hard at work on a Saturday afternoon. Skirting in the corridor in progress. Looking forward to next week!

Day 18 Flooring continues. Day 19 Flooring was finished on Day 19! Day 20 Air-con guy came to do piping. Piping through the rooms. Piping all the way to the MBR's air-con ledge. Pipings are not pretty things.

ahh i went down today but didn't really notice the floor tiles' joining with the toilet..i don't think there's an issue..if the person laying tiles is good, he should have measured it properly to level both tiles? it's the same for all BTO flats right? ay take note of the tiles and bomb shelter door..my colleague's contractor laid the flooring till they can't open the bomb shelter door and had to hack and redo that area.. I did try to walk barefoot, it feels alright, didn't feel any unevenness..but quite dirty now
