Hi, Can some advise me on roller blinds? I am thinking to install them in my flat but no sure about the price range and quality. I am looking for blackout or probably 70% light cut off kind of blind, are they available? Is there any blind that reduces heat? Most importantly what is a good price range to look for and where to get them in the east area. I am thinking of bedok central or city plaza, has anyone been there?

Hi enci, Well...how neat can a guy be when he is living alone? My current room is also like a mess, stuffed every little holes and corners with things. Your room is not too bad but the rest look kind of chaotic. As for your broken marble floor, I have seen some high fashion boutiques in western countries using that as their floor and it turn out to be very nice and have very unexpected result. Probably the designers there are more adventurous compared to the ones in Singapore who will follow trend. Flip the magazine called Wallpaper, a lifestyle magazine. Since you wish to highlight your buddha, probably you can get your ID to design a nice altar that is part of some cupboard for storage. Look at the design on Indochine Pub and Restaurant, they play with with the buddha scuplture, wall colours and lighting. Probably you can have some industry lightings for your ceiling or big track lights that are used in fashion boutique. Warm light is better with white light because it enhance the colours of your wall, white light will just wash out everything.

The weekend is physically hectic for the both of us, have to fix the IKEA furnitures and clean up the place. The IKEA furnitures are tough to fix and very heavy to move, my body is aching badly right now. Beside the furniture fixing, Mrs Sumobear was busy with cleaning up the place...sweeping...vacuuming and mopping. She is equally burnt out as me but I think it is a no pain no gain situation because the satisfaction is there when we see everything is done. The next task on the list will be preparing all the prints to hang up on the walls, drill all the holes needed, get our roller blinds and mattresses. Targetting to complete in 2 weeks time.

Since the chapter of renovation has come to an end, it is time to do abit of recap on my home development. the before and after...

Hi Cantona, Well...I cannot afford to delay anymore. Have to move on with my other plans. There are still some unfinished work which I do not know if I should get my contractor to do.

Hi Jaren, Space planning is very important as it will affect your walking space, lighting and electrical points. E.g. Do you need a light above your dining table. If you are engaging an ID, then he or she should be able to assist you. I got a contractor so have to be on my own, firstly I will compile all the specification of the furnitures that I am going to have and will use masking tapes to plot the space on the floor. This will help you to visualise how much space is needed for furnitures and the remaining space for you to move around. You can use coloured tapes or write something on the tape to differentiate things. I remembered that I burnt midnight oil to plot the points using the floorplan and went to site the next day morning to continue with on-site plotting to ensure everything is right.

After reading so much entries of "What should I do for renovation?", I feel like contributing my techniques and thoughts with everyone. I am very sure that most people will definately dive into a stack of interior books and magazines to search for the ideal formula of a nice home. Everyone wants a nice home in different ways because design is very subjective, so look at a bright side if anyone is making a critic. Speaking of inspiration for home making, I source for them from my surrounding beside publications. I can see nice colour combination from a stalk of lily, toy, worn-out building, indian lady in sari...almost everything that we can see in our daily life, it is a natural color palette that is free. We will feel good naturally when the colour combination is right, colours affect our mood. There is no bad colours, only bad combination. It is because of the chemistry of colours and mood, most designer or creatives will do a "Mood Board" to showcase the possible materials for a creation before confirmation. Fashion designer can have the sewing techniques, fabrics, threads, laces and buttons. Painter can have the brushes, type of paint and paper. So it is pretty clear for the possible things that you can have for home making. Mood board is like a scrapbook where you can compile all the ideas. I snapped alot of ambigious pictures when I was hunting for ideas, a photo can inspire me alot like the proportion of colour usage, materials, mood and composition.

Hmmm...house-warming....erm I have not plan anything yet. I am more concern about the furnishing and decor right now. But Ms Sumobear is so excited with having buffet for house warming and kept asking me when is it going to happen. Will plan something as the time comes...so many things waiting to be done in this year. Once the home is completed, I have to full force on my wedding preparation...have to plan video story board, do a multimedia photo presentation for the dinner, prepare wedding flavours and etc. Have to setup a wedding production team.

Thanks! Hope that I have the budget to print those pictures. We are having a very tight budget and there are still things like mattress, tv and curtains have not buy.

Hi Cantona & oonik grl, Thanks for your concern! Yesterday is the official hand over as I do not wish to push on any further and yesterday was Ms Sumobear's birthday too, so I think it will be a significant day to get our new home. Well...I made the full payment to my contractor and I did gave him some negative comments that he is quite unhappy with and got very defensive. There are still some things which I am not really happy but Ms Sumobear asked me to let go and do not argue with him any further We did a quick clean up but it is still very dirty as expected for a newly renovated home...probably a few rounds of cleaning. IKEA furnitures are in and have started to unpack and fix up, thank god that I have the electric screwdriver to help me. Can wait for the weekend to come and continue doing up the place.

Mood board is a very a good tool for all designer...that is where you can compare all forms of material by colours, textures, cost and other personal remarks.
-
Are you going to do anything to the walls? Your floor looks ok! Try doing a mood board meaning getting some material samples and put them side by side. If I am you, I will go for dark wood cabinet body and beige doors (colour close your floor). Try to stick to 2 colours for a space.

Such table is no longer common in kopitaim already. Probably the kopitiam purchased them in a larger quantity to get a better price. Try flipping the newspaper for those furniture sales or check out those furniture shops at HDB area, you may have a good chance. If you do not mind 2nd hand stuff, you can always go to those antique shop to get one...the price can be quite good and the design is nicer. The "modern ones" are not as nice as before already.
-
Well...I am planning to give him the last payment tomorrow even he has not complete the things that he promised to do. It is up to him whether he still has his conscience. I want my home and move on. Just tough luck having him as my contractor.
-
Well...it is his fault from the beginning and everything is a fact. I think I should be the devil who take serious revenge on him.

I did something stupid earlier this afternoon by sending the wrong SMS to my contractor. It was supposed to be a SMS to Ms SumoBear informing her about the meeting with my contractor's boss tomorrow to do the final renovation round up. I added some comment about my contractor saying he has washed his hands on my flat since he has moved on to the new company and I have also commented that the renovation is "Crappy" A few minutes after sending out the SMS, my contractor called to inform me that I had sent out the wrong SMS and he read my comments. I think he was kind of upset with my comments and tried to explain that he will be responsible for my flat's renovation even if he has moved on. Then he asked me "What is Crappy?" Haha... Well..I do feel sorry that I have mis-sent the SMS but deep in my heart that it is a fact. I do feel crappy with the renovation and management of my contractor. The truth hurts! Sorry dude...

No lah...I have to go to some art shop like art friend to customised the frame, no time to do the frame myself. Anyway artfriend do sell some standard length of canvas frame strips which you can mix and match to form the frame. Stretching the canvas over the frame is not an easy task, must know the correct technique to pull the print and staple. Some artists even have their own special techniques with mounting canvas...
-
Without framing. I have to go to another place to get my customised frame do the framing myself. Feel like the old school days.

Well I think renovation should never have a fixed amount, must have some buffer. Actually if you are doing prints within the A4, A3, A2....the price is cheaper. I am quoted for such a price is also because I am printing onto canvas with outdoor banner kind of ink. Prices varies with materials.
-
Quite a good price for your renovation based on the area space.
